பிறகு, எஸ்தர் மொர்தெகாய்க்கு இந்த பதிலை அனுப்பினாள்: “மொர்தெகாய் சூசானிலுள்ள எல்லா யூதர்களையும் ஒன்றுசேர்த்து எனக்காக உபவாசம் இருங்கள். மூன்று நாட்கள் இரவும் பகலும் உண்ணாமலும் குடிக்காமலும் இருங்கள். நானும் உங்களைப் போன்றே உபவாசம் இருப்பேன். என் வேலைக்காரப் பெண்களும் உபவாசம் இருப்பார்கள். நான் உபவாசம் இருந்த பிறகு அரசனிடம் செல்வேன். அரசன் அழைக்காமல் போவது என்பது சட்டத்திற்கு எதிரானது என்று எனக்குத் தெரியும். ஆனால் நான் எவ்வாறாகிலும் செய்வேன். நான் மரித்தால் மரிக்கிறேன்.”
