ਕਨਾਨੀਆਂ ਨਾਲ ਯੁੱਧ ਆਰਾਦ ਦਾ ਕਨਾਨੀ ਰਾਜਾ ਨੇਗੇਵ ਵਿੱਚ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਸੀ। ਉਸ ਨੇ ਸੁਣਿਆ ਕਿ ਇਸਰਾਏਲ ਦੇ ਲੋਕ ਅਥਾਰੀਮ ਨੂੰ ਜਾਣ ਵਾਲੀ ਸੜਕ ਉੱਤੇ ਆ ਰਹੇ ਸਨ। ਇਸ ਲਈ ਰਾਜੇ ਨੇ ਬਾਹਰ ਆਕੇ ਇਸਰਾਏਲ ਦੇ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਉੱਤੇ ਹਮਲਾ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ। ਉਸ ਨੇ ਕੁਝ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਫ਼ੜਕੇ ਬੰਦੀ ਬਣਾ ਲਿਆ।
