Genesis 38:1-23 in Punjabi

1 And it came to pass at that time, that Judah went down from his brethren, and turned in to a certain Adullamite, whose name was Hirah.

2 And Judah saw there a daughter of a certain Canaanite, whose name was Shuah; and he took her, and went in unto her.

3 And she conceived, and bare a son; and he called his name Er.

4 And she conceived again, and bare a son; and she called his name Onan.

5 And she yet again conceived, and bare a son; and called his name Shelah: and he was at Chezib, when she bare him.

6 And Judah took a wife for Er his firstborn, whose name was Tamar.

7 And Er, Judah’s firstborn, was wicked in the sight of the Lord; and the Lord slew him.

8 And Judah said unto Onan, Go in unto thy brother’s wife, and marry her, and raise up seed to thy brother.

9 And Onan knew that the seed should not be his; and it came to pass, when he went in unto his brother’s wife, that he spilled it on the ground, lest that he should give seed to his brother.

10 And the thing which he did displeased the Lord: wherefore he slew him also.

11 Then said Judah to Tamar his daughter in law, Remain a widow at thy father’s house, till Shelah my son be grown: for he said, Lest peradventure he die also, as his brethren did. And Tamar went and dwelt in her father’s house.

12 And in process of time the daughter of Shuah Judah’s wife died; and Judah was comforted, and went up unto his sheepshearers to Timnath, he and his friend Hirah the Adullamite.

13 And it was told Tamar, saying, Behold thy father in law goeth up to Timnath to shear his sheep.

14 And she put her widow’s garments off from her, and covered her with a vail, and wrapped herself, and sat in an open place, which is by the way to Timnath; for she saw that Shelah was grown, and she was not given unto him to wife.

15 When Judah saw her, he thought her to be an harlot; because she had covered her face.

16 And he turned unto her by the way, and said, Go to, I pray thee, let me come in unto thee; (for he knew not that she was his daughter in law.) And she said, What wilt thou give me, that thou mayest come in unto me?

17 And he said, I will send thee a kid from the flock. And she said, Wilt thou give me a pledge, till thou send it?

18 And he said, What pledge shall I give thee? And she said, Thy signet, and thy bracelets, and thy staff that is in thine hand. And he gave it her, and came in unto her, and she conceived by him.

19 And she arose, and went away, and laid by her vail from her, and put on the garments of her widowhood.

20 And Judah sent the kid by the hand of his friend the Adullamite, to receive his pledge from the woman’s hand: but he found her not.

21 Then he asked the men of that place, saying, Where is the harlot, that was openly by the way side? And they said, There was no harlot in this place.

22 And he returned to Judah, and said, I cannot find her; and also the men of the place said, that there was no harlot in this place.

23 And Judah said, Let her take it to her, lest we be shamed: behold, I sent this kid, and thou hast not found her.

1 ਯਹੂਦਾਹ ਅਤੇ ਤਾਮਾਰ ਤਕਰੀਬਨ ਉਸੇ ਵੇਲੇ, ਯਹੂਦਾਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਭਰਾਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਛੱਡ ਗਿਆ ਅਤੇ ਹੀਰਾਹ ਨਾਮ ਦੇ ਇੱਕ ਆਦਮੀ ਦੇ ਕੋਲ ਰਹਿਣ ਲਈ ਚੱਲਾ ਗਿਆ। ਹੀਰਾਹ ਅਦੂਲਾਮ ਕਸਬੇ ਦਾ ਸੀ।

2 ਯਹੂਦਾਹ ਨੂੰ ਉੱਥੇ ਇੱਕ ਕਨਾਨੀ ਕੁੜੀ ਮਿਲ ਪਈ ਅਤੇ ਉਸ ਨੇ ਉਸ ਨਾਲ ਸ਼ਾਦੀ ਕਰ ਲਈ। ਕੁੜੀ ਦੇ ਪਿਤਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸ਼ੂਆ ਸੀ।
And Judah saw there a daughter of a certain Canaanite, whose name was Shuah; and he took her, and went in unto her.

3 ਕਨਾਨੀ ਕੁੜੀ ਨੇ ਇੱਕ ਪੁੱਤਰ ਨੂੰ ਜਨਮ ਦਿੱਤਾ। ਉਸ ਨੇ ਉਸਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਏਰ ਰੱਖਿਆ।
And she conceived, and bare a son; and he called his name Er.

4 ਬਾਦ ਵਿੱਚ ਉਸ ਨੇ ਇੱਕ ਹੋਰ ਪੁੱਤਰ ਨੂੰ ਜਨਮ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਉਸਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਉਸ ਨੇ ਓਨਾਨ ਰੱਖਿਆ।
And she conceived again, and bare a son; and she called his name Onan.

5 ਬਾਦ ਵਿੱਚ ਉਸਦਾ ਇੱਕ ਹੋਰ ਪੁੱਤਰ ਹੋਇਆ ਜਿਸਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸ਼ੇਲਾਹ ਸੀ। ਜਦੋਂ ਇਸ ਤੀਸਰੇ ਪੁੱਤਰ ਦਾ ਜਨਮ ਹੋਇਆ ਤਾਂ ਯਹੂਦਾਹ ਕਜ਼ੀਬ ਵਿੱਚ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਸੀ।
And she yet again conceived, and bare a son; and called his name Shelah: and he was at Chezib, when she bare him.

6 ਯਹੂਦਾਹ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਪਹਿਲੇ ਪੁੱਤਰ ਏਰ ਲਈ ਇੱਕ ਵਹੁਟੀ ਲੱਭੀ। ਔਰਤ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਤਾਮਾਰ ਸੀ।
And Judah took a wife for Er his firstborn, whose name was Tamar.

7 ਪਰ ਏਰ ਨੇ ਬਹੁਤ ਸਾਰੇ ਮੰਦੇ ਕੰਮ ਕੀਤੇ। ਯਹੋਵਾਹ ਉਸ ਉੱਪਰ ਪ੍ਰਸੰਨ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੀ। ਇਸ ਲਈ ਯਹੋਵਾਹ ਨੇ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ।
And Er, Judah’s firstborn, was wicked in the sight of the Lord; and the Lord slew him.

8 ਫ਼ੇਰ ਯਹੂਦਾਹ ਨੇ ਓਨਾਨ ਨੂੰ ਆਖਿਆ, “ਆਪਣੇ ਮ੍ਰਿਤਕ ਭਰਾ ਦੀ ਪਤਨੀ ਕੋਲ ਜਾਹ ਅਤੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਭਰਾ ਦੇ ਪਰਿਵਾਰ ਦੀ ਪੰਗਤ ਨੂੰ ਜਿਉਂਦਿਆਂ ਰੱਖਣ ਲਈ, ਉਸ ਨਾਲ ਆਪਣਾ ਫ਼ਰਜ਼ ਪੂਰਾ ਕਰ।”
And Judah said unto Onan, Go in unto thy brother’s wife, and marry her, and raise up seed to thy brother.

9 ਓਨਾਨ ਜਾਣਦਾ ਸੀ ਕਿ ਇਸ ਸੰਭੋਗ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਬੱਚਾ ਉਸਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਅਖਵਾਏਗਾ। ਓਨਾਨ ਨੇ ਤਾਮਾਰ ਨਾਲ ਜਿਨਸੀ ਰਿਸ਼ਤਾ ਜੋੜਿਆ ਪਰ ਉਸ ਨੇ ਆਪਣਾ ਵੀਰਜ ਜ਼ਮੀਨ ਉੱਤੇ ਵਗਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ। ਉਸ ਨੇ ਅਜਿਹਾ ਆਪਣੇ ਭਰਾ ਨੂੰ ਉੱਤਰਾਧਿਕਾਰੀ ਨਾ ਦੇਣ ਦੀ ਤਵਜੋ ਨਾਲ ਕੀਤਾ।
And Onan knew that the seed should not be his; and it came to pass, when he went in unto his brother’s wife, that he spilled it on the ground, lest that he should give seed to his brother.

10 ਇਸ ਨਾਲ ਯਹੋਵਾਹ ਨੂੰ ਗੁੱਸਾ ਆ ਗਿਆ। ਇਸ ਲਈ ਯਹੋਵਾਹ ਨੇ ਓਨਾਨ ਨੂੰ ਵੀ ਮਾਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ।
And the thing which he did displeased the Lord: wherefore he slew him also.

11 ਫ਼ੇਰ ਯਹੂਦਾਹ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੀ ਨੂੰਹ ਤਾਮਾਰ ਨੂੰ ਆਖਿਆ, “ਆਪਣੇ ਪਿਤਾ ਦੇ ਘਰ ਵਾਪਸ ਚਲੀ ਜਾਹ। ਉੱਥੇ ਠਹਿਰ ਅਤੇ ਓਨਾ ਚਿਰ ਸ਼ਾਦੀ ਨਾ ਕਰੀਂ ਜਦੋਂ ਤੱਕ ਕਿ ਮੇਰਾ ਛੋਟਾ ਪੁੱਤਰ ਸ਼ੇਲਾਹ ਜਵਾਨ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ।” ਯਹੂਦਾਹ ਨੂੰ ਡਰ ਸੀ ਕਿ ਸ਼ੇਲਾਹ ਵੀ ਆਪਣੇ ਭਰਾਵਾਂ ਵਾਂਗ ਨਾ ਮਾਰਿਆ ਜਾਵੇ। ਤਾਮਾਰ ਆਪਣੇ ਪਿਤਾ ਦੇ ਘਰ ਵਾਪਸ ਚਲੀ ਗਈ।
Then said Judah to Tamar his daughter in law, Remain a widow at thy father’s house, till Shelah my son be grown: for he said, Lest peradventure he die also, as his brethren did. And Tamar went and dwelt in her father’s house.

12 ਬਾਦ ਵਿੱਚ, ਯਹੂਦਾਹ ਦੀ ਪਤਨੀ, ਸ਼ੂਆ ਦੀ ਧੀ, ਮਰ ਗਈ। ਸੋਗ ਦੇ ਦਿਨਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਮਗਰੋਂ ਯਹੂਦਾਹ ਉਸ ਅਦੂਲਾਮੀ ਦੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਿੱਤਰ ਹੀਰਾਹ ਨਾਲ ਤਿਮਨਾਥ ਕੋਲ ਚੱਲਾ ਗਿਆ। ਯਹੂਦਾਹ ਤਿਮਨਾਥ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੀਆਂ ਭੇਡਾਂ ਦੀ ਉੱਨ ਲਾਹੁਣ ਗਿਆ ਸੀ।
And in process of time the daughter of Shuah Judah’s wife died; and Judah was comforted, and went up unto his sheepshearers to Timnath, he and his friend Hirah the Adullamite.

13 ਤਾਮਾਰ ਨੂੰ ਪਤਾ ਲੱਗਿਆ ਕਿ ਉਸਦਾ ਸੌਹਰਾ ਆਪਣੀਆਂ ਭੇਡਾਂ ਦੀ ਉੱਨ ਲਾਹੁਣ ਲਈ ਤਿਮਨਾਥ ਜਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਸੀ।
And it was told Tamar, saying, Behold thy father in law goeth up to Timnath to shear his sheep.

14 ਤਾਮਾਰ ਹਮੇਸ਼ਾ ਅਜਿਹੇ ਕੱਪੜੇ ਪਾਉਂਦੀ ਸੀ ਜਿਸਤੋਂ ਨਜ਼ਰ ਆਵੇ ਕਿ ਉਹ ਵਿਧਵਾ ਸੀ। ਇਸ ਲਈ ਉਸ ਨੇ ਕੁਝ ਵਖਰੇ ਵਸਤਰ ਪਹਿਨੇ ਅਤੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਚਿਹਰੇ ਨੂੰ ਘੁੰਡ ਨਾਲ ਢੱਕ ਲਿਆ। ਫ਼ੇਰ ਉਹ ਏਨਿਯਮ ਫ਼ਾਟਕ ਕੋਲ ਬੈਠ ਗਈ ਜੋ ਤਿਮਨਾਥ ਦੇ ਰਸਤੇ ਉੱਤੇ ਹੈ। ਤਾਮਾਰ ਜਾਣਦੀ ਸੀ ਕਿ ਯਹੂਦਾਹ ਦਾ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਛੋਟਾ ਪੁੱਤਰ ਸ਼ੇਲਾਹ ਹੁਣ ਜਵਾਨ ਹੋ ਚੁੱਕਿਆ ਸੀ। ਪਰ ਯਹੂਦਾਹ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਉਸ ਨਾਲ ਵਿਆਹੁਣ ਦੀਆਂ ਵਿਉਂਤਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਬਣਾਵੇਗਾ।
And she put her widow’s garments off from her, and covered her with a vail, and wrapped herself, and sat in an open place, which is by the way to Timnath; for she saw that Shelah was grown, and she was not given unto him to wife.

15 ਯਹੂਦਾਹ ਉਸ ਸੜਕ ਉੱਤੇ ਸਫ਼ਰ ਕਰ ਰਿਹਾ ਸੀ। ਉਸ ਨੇ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਦੇਖਿਆ ਪਰ ਇਹ ਸੋਚਿਆ ਕਿ ਸ਼ਾਇਦ ਇਹ ਵੇਸਵਾ ਹੈ। (ਉਸਦਾ ਚਿਹਰਾ ਵੇਸਵਾ ਵਾਂਗ ਨਕਾਬ ਨਾਲ ਕਜਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਸੀ।)
When Judah saw her, he thought her to be an harlot; because she had covered her face.

16 ਇਸ ਲਈ ਯਹੂਦਾਹ ਉਸ ਕੋਲ ਗਿਆ ਅਤੇ ਆਖਿਆ, “ਕੀ ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਲ ਜਿਨਸੀ ਸੰਬੰਧ ਜੋੜ ਸੱਕਦਾ ਹਾਂ।” (ਯਹੂਦਾਹ ਨੂੰ ਇਹ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੀ ਪਤਾ ਕਿ ਉਸਦੀ ਨੂੰਹ ਤਾਮਾਰ ਸੀ।) ਉਸ ਨੇ ਆਖਿਆ, “ਇਸ ਬਦਲੇ ਤੂੰ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਕੀ ਦੇਵੇਂਗਾ?”
And he turned unto her by the way, and said, Go to, I pray thee, let me come in unto thee; (for he knew not that she was his daughter in law.) And she said, What wilt thou give me, that thou mayest come in unto me?

17 ਯਹੂਦਾਹ ਨੇ ਜਵਾਬ ਦਿੱਤਾ, “ਮੈਂ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਇੱਜੜ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਇੱਕ ਜਵਾਨ ਬੱਕਰਾ ਦੇਵਾਂਗਾ।” ਉਸ ਨੇ ਜਵਾਬ ਦਿੱਤਾ, “ਮੈਨੂੰ ਇਹ ਮੰਜ਼ੂਰ ਹੈ। ਪਰ ਇਸਤੋਂ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਕਿ ਤੂੰ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਬੱਕਰਾਂ ਭੇਜੇ ਤੂੰ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਰੱਖਣ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਕੋਈ ਚੀਜ਼ ਦੇ।”
And he said, I will send thee a kid from the flock. And she said, Wilt thou give me a pledge, till thou send it?

18 ਯਹੂਦਾਹ ਨੇ ਪੁੱਛਿਆ, “ਤੂੰ ਮੇਰੇ ਪਾਸੋਂ ਇਸ ਗੱਲ ਦੇ ਸਬੂਤ ਵਜੋਂ ਕੀ ਚਾਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਮੈਂ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਬੱਕਰਾਂ ਭੇਜਾਂਗਾ?” ਤਾਮਾਰ ਨੇ ਜਵਾਬ ਦਿੱਤਾ, “ਮੈਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੀ ਮੋਹਰ ਅਤੇ ਇਸਦੀ ਰਸੀ ਦੇ ਜਿਹੜੀ ਤੂੰ ਆਪਣੀਆਂ ਚਿਠੀਆਂ ਉੱਤੇ ਇਸਤੇਮਾਲ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈਂ ਅਤੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੀ ਚੱਲਣ ਵਾਲੀ ਸੋਟੀ ਦੇ ਦੇ।” ਯਹੂਦਾਹ ਨੇ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਇਹ ਚੀਜ਼ਾਂ ਦੇ ਦਿੱਤੀਆਂ। ਫ਼ੇਰ ਯਹੂਦਾਹ ਅਤੇ ਤਾਮਾਰ ਨੇ ਸੰਭੋਗ ਕੀਤਾ ਅਤੇ ਤਾਮਾਰ ਗਰਭਵਤੀ ਹੋ ਗਈ।
And he said, What pledge shall I give thee? And she said, Thy signet, and thy bracelets, and thy staff that is in thine hand. And he gave it her, and came in unto her, and she conceived by him.

19 ਤਾਮਾਰ ਘਰ ਗਈ ਅਤੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਚਿਹਰੇ ਤੋਂ ਨਕਾਬ ਉਤਾਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ। ਫ਼ੇਰ ਉਸ ਨੇ ਉਹੀ ਕੱਪੜੇ ਦੁਬਾਰਾ ਪਹਿਨ ਲਈ ਜਿਹੜੇ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਵਿਧਵਾ ਦਰਸ਼ਾਉਂਦੇ ਸਨ।
And she arose, and went away, and laid by her vail from her, and put on the garments of her widowhood.

20 ਬਾਦ ਵਿੱਚ ਯਹੂਦਾਹ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਿੱਤਰ ਹੀਰਾਹ ਨੂੰ ਏਨਯਿਮ ਘਲਿਆ ਤਾਂ ਜੋ ਉਹ ਵੇਸਵਾ ਨੂੰ ਇਕਰਾਰ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਬੱਕਰਾ ਦੇ ਆਵੇ। ਯਹੂਦਾਹ ਨੇ ਹੀਰਾਹ ਨੂੰ ਇਹ ਵੀ ਆਖਿਆ ਕਿ ਉਸ ਪਾਸੋਂ ਖਾਸ ਮੋਹਰ ਅਤੇ ਸੋਟੀ ਵੀ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਆਵੇ। ਪਰ ਹੀਰਾਹ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਨਾ ਲੱਭ ਸੱਕਿਆ।

21 ਹੀਰਾਹ ਨੇ ਏਨਯਿਮ ਜਿਲ੍ਹੇ ਦੇ ਕੁਝ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪੁੱਛਿਆ, “ਉਹ ਮੰਦਰ ਦੀ ਵੇਸਵਾ ਕਿੱਥੇ ਹੈ ਜਿਹੜੀ ਸੜਕ ਕੰਢੇ ਬੈਠੀ ਹੋਈ ਸੀ?” ਆਦਮੀਆਂ ਨੇ ਜਵਾਬ ਦਿੱਤਾ, “ਇੱਥੇ ਕਦੇ ਕੋਈ ਵੇਸਵਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ।”
Then he asked the men of that place, saying, Where is the harlot, that was openly by the way side? And they said, There was no harlot in this place.

22 ਇਸ ਲਈ ਯਹੂਦਾਹ ਦਾ ਮਿੱਤਰ ਯਹੂਦਾਹ ਕੋਲ ਵਾਪਸ ਚੱਲਾ ਗਿਆ ਅਤੇ ਕਹਿਣ ਲੱਗਾ, “ਮੈਨੂੰ ਤਾਂ ਉਹ ਔਰਤ ਲੱਭੀ ਨਹੀਂ। ਉਸ ਥਾਂ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਆਦਮੀਆਂ ਨੇ ਆਖਿਆ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਇੱਥੇ ਤਾਂ ਕੋਈ ਵੇਸਵਾ ਹੈ ਹੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੀ।”
And he returned to Judah, and said, I cannot find her; and also the men of the place said, that there was no harlot in this place.

23 ਇਸ ਲਈ ਯਹੂਦਾਹ ਨੇ ਆਖਿਆ, “ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਚੀਜ਼ਾਂ ਰੱਖ ਲੈਣ ਦਿਉ। ਮੈਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਚਾਹੁੰਦਾ ਕਿ ਲੋਕ ਸਾਡੇ ਉੱਪਰ ਹੱਸਣ। ਮੈਂ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਬੱਕਰਾ ਦੇਣ ਦੀ ਕੋਸ਼ਿਸ਼ ਕੀਤੀ ਸੀ, ਪਰ ਅਸੀਂ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਲੱਭ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੱਕੇ, ਇੰਨੀ ਗੱਲ ਕਾਫ਼ੀ ਹੈ।”
And Judah said, Let her take it to her, lest we be shamed: behold, I sent this kid, and thou hast not found her.
