אֱלֹהִ֤ים׀ O God, ʾĕlōhîm בְּאָזְנֵ֬ינוּ with our ears, ʾōzen שָׁמַ֗עְנוּ We have heard šāmaʿ אֲבוֹתֵ֥ינוּ our fathers ʾāb סִפְּרוּ have told sāpar לָ֑נוּ פֹּ֥עַל us, work pōʿal פָּעַ֥לְתָּ thou didst pāʿal בִֽ֝ימֵיהֶ֗ם in their days, yôm בִּ֣ימֵי in the times yôm קֶֽדֶם׃ of old. qedem

אַתָּ֤ה׀ thou ʾattâ יָדְךָ֡ with thy hand, yād גּוֹיִ֣ם the heathen gôy ה֭וֹרַשְׁתָּ didst drive out yāraš וַתִּטָּעֵ֑ם and plantedst nāṭaʿ תָּרַ֥ע them; thou didst afflict rāʿaʿ לְ֝אֻמִּ֗ים the people, lĕʾōm וַֽתְּשַׁלְּחֵֽם׃ and cast them out. šālaḥ

כִּ֤י For kî לֹ֪א not lōʾ בְחַרְבָּ֡ם in possession by their own sword, ḥereb יָ֥רְשׁוּ they got yāraš אָ֗רֶץ the land ʾereṣ וּזְרוֹעָם֮ did their own arm zĕrôaʿ לֹא neither lōʾ הוֹשִׁ֪יעָ֫ה save yāšaʿ לָּ֥מוֹ כִּֽי them: but kî יְמִֽינְךָ֣ thy right hand, yāmîn וּ֭זְרוֹעֲךָ and thine arm, zĕrôaʿ וְא֥וֹר and the light ʾôr פָּנֶ֗יךָ of thy countenance, pānîm כִּ֣י because kî רְצִיתָֽם׃ thou hadst a favour unto them. rāṣâ

בְּ֭ךָ צָרֵ֣ינוּ our enemies: ṣar נְנַגֵּ֑חַ Through thee will we push down nāgaḥ בְּ֝שִׁמְךָ֗ through thy name šēm נָב֥וּס will we tread them under bûs קָמֵֽינוּ׃ that rise up against us. qûm

כִּ֤י For kî לֹ֣א I will not lōʾ בְקַשְׁתִּ֣י in my bow, qešet אֶבְטָ֑ח trust bāṭaḥ וְ֝חַרְבִּ֗י shall my sword ḥereb לֹ֣א neither lōʾ תוֹשִׁיעֵֽנִי׃ save me. yāšaʿ

כִּ֣י But kî ה֭וֹשַׁעְתָּנוּ thou hast saved yāšaʿ מִצָּרֵ֑ינוּ us from our enemies, ṣar וּמְשַׂנְאֵ֥ינוּ that hated us. śānēʾ הֱבִישֽׁוֹתָ׃ and hast put them to shame bûš

בֵּֽ֭אלֹהִים In God ʾĕlōhîm הִלַּלְ֣נוּ we boast hālal כָל all kōl הַיּ֑וֹם the day yôm וְשִׁמְךָ֓׀ thy name šēm לְעוֹלָ֖ם for ever. ʿôlām נוֹדֶ֣ה long, and praise yādâ סֶֽלָה׃ Selah. selâ

אַף But ʾap זָ֭נַחְתָּ thou hast cast off, zānaḥ וַתַּכְלִימֵ֑נוּ and put us to shame; kālam וְלֹא lōʾ תֵ֝צֵ֗א and goest not forth yāṣāʾ בְּצִבְאוֹתֵֽינוּ׃ with our armies. ṣābāʾ

תְּשִׁיבֵ֣נוּ Thou makest us to turn šûb אָ֭חוֹר back ʾāḥôr מִנִּי from min צָ֑ר the enemy: ṣar וּ֝מְשַׂנְאֵ֗ינוּ and they which hate śānēʾ שָׁ֣סוּ us spoil for themselves. šāsâ לָֽמוֹ׃

תִּ֭תְּנֵנוּ Thou hast given nātan כְּצֹ֣אן us like sheep ṣōn מַאֲכָ֑ל for meat; maʾăkāl וּ֝בַגּוֹיִ֗ם us among the heathen. gôy זֵרִיתָֽנוּ׃ and hast scattered zārâ

תִּמְכֹּֽר Thou sellest mākar עַמְּךָ֥ thy people ʿam בְלֹא lōʾ ה֑וֹן for nought, hôn וְלֹ֥א and dost not lōʾ רִ֝בִּ֗יתָ increase rābâ בִּמְחִירֵיהֶֽם׃ by their price. mĕḥîr

תְּשִׂימֵ֣נוּ Thou makest śûm חֶ֭רְפָּה us a reproach ḥerpâ לִשְׁכֵנֵ֑ינוּ to our neighbours, šākēn לַ֥עַג a scorn laʿag וָ֝קֶ֗לֶס and a derision qeles לִסְבִיבוֹתֵֽינוּ׃ to them that are round about us. sābîb

תְּשִׂימֵ֣נוּ Thou makest śûm מָ֭שָׁל us a byword māšāl בַּגּוֹיִ֑ם among the heathen, gôy מְנֽוֹד a shaking mānôd רֹ֝֗אשׁ of the head rōš בַּלְאֻמִּֽים׃ among the people. lĕʾōm

כָּל kōl הַ֭יּוֹם continually yôm כְּלִמָּתִ֣י My confusion kĕlimmâ נֶגְדִּ֑י before neged וּבֹ֖שֶׁת me, and the shame bōšet פָּנַ֣י of my face pānîm כִּסָּֽתְנִי׃ hath covered me, kāsâ

מִ֭קּוֹל For the voice qôl מְחָרֵ֣ף of him that reproacheth ḥārap וּמְגַדֵּ֑ף and blasphemeth; gādap מִפְּנֵ֥י by reason pānîm א֝וֹיֵ֗ב of the enemy ʾōyēb וּמִתְנַקֵּֽם׃ and avenger. nāqam

כָּל All kōl זֹ֣את this zōt בָּ֭אַתְנוּ is come upon bôʾ וְלֹ֣א us; yet have we not lōʾ שְׁכַחֲנ֑וּךָ forgotten šākaḥ וְלֹֽא thee, neither lōʾ שִׁ֝קַּ֗רְנוּ have we dealt falsely šāqar בִּבְרִיתֶֽךָ׃ in thy covenant. bĕrît

לֹא is not lōʾ נָס֣וֹג turned sûg אָח֣וֹר back, ʾāḥôr לִבֵּ֑נוּ Our heart lēb וַתֵּ֥ט declined nāṭâ אֲשֻׁרֵ֗ינוּ neither have our steps ʾāšur מִנִּ֥י from min אָרְחֶֽךָ׃ thy way; ʾōraḥ

כִּ֣י Though kî דִ֭כִּיתָנוּ thou hast sore broken dākâ בִּמְק֣וֹם us in the place māqôm תַּנִּ֑ים of dragons, tannîn וַתְּכַ֖ס and covered kāsâ עָלֵ֣ינוּ ʿal בְצַלְמָֽוֶת׃ us with the shadow of death. ṣalmāwet

אִם If ʾim שָׁ֭כַחְנוּ we have forgotten šākaḥ שֵׁ֣ם the name šēm אֱלֹהֵ֑ינוּ of our God, ʾĕlōhîm וַנִּפְרֹ֥שׂ or stretched out pāraś כַּ֝פֵּ֗ינוּ our hands kap לְאֵ֣ל god; ʾēl זָֽר׃ to a strange zûr

כִּֽי Yea, kî עָ֭לֶיךָ for ʿal הֹרַ֣גְנוּ thy sake are we killed hārag כָל all kōl הַיּ֑וֹם the day yôm נֶ֝חְשַׁ֗בְנוּ long; we are counted ḥāšab כְּצֹ֣אן as sheep ṣōn טִבְחָֽה׃ for the slaughter. ṭibḥâ

לָֽמָּה Wherefore mâ פָנֶ֥יךָ thou thy face, pānîm תַסְתִּ֑יר hidest sātar תִּשְׁכַּ֖ח forgettest šākaḥ עָנְיֵ֣נוּ our affliction ʿŏnî וְֽלַחֲצֵֽנוּ׃ and our oppression? laḥaṣ

כִּ֤י For kî שָׁ֣חָה is bowed down šûaḥ לֶעָפָ֣ר to the dust: ʿāpār נַפְשֵׁ֑נוּ our soul nepeš דָּבְקָ֖ה cleaveth dābaq לָאָ֣רֶץ unto the earth. ʾereṣ בִּטְנֵֽנוּ׃ our belly beṭen

ק֭וּמָֽה Arise qûm עֶזְרָ֣תָה for our help, ʿezrâ לָּ֑נוּ וּ֝פְדֵ֗נוּ and redeem pādâ לְמַ֣עַן sake. maʿan חַסְדֶּֽךָ׃ us for thy mercies' ḥēsēd
