וַיָּבֹ֣אוּ Then came bôʾ בְנֵֽי the children bēn יִ֠שְׂרָאֵל of Israel, yiśrāʾēl כָּל the whole kōl הָ֨עֵדָ֤ה congregation, ʿēdâ מִדְבַּר into the desert midbār צִן֙ of Zin ṣin בַּחֹ֣דֶשׁ month: ḥōdeš הָֽרִאשׁ֔וֹן in the first riʾšôn וַיֵּ֥שֶׁב abode yāšab הָעָ֖ם and the people ʿam בְּקָדֵ֑שׁ in Kadesh; qādēš וַתָּ֤מָת died mût שָׁם֙ there, šām מִרְיָ֔ם and Miriam miryām וַתִּקָּבֵ֖ר and was buried qābar שָֽׁם׃ there. šām

וְלֹא no lōʾ הָ֥יָה And there was hāyâ מַ֖יִם water mayim לָֽעֵדָ֑ה for the congregation: ʿēdâ וַיִּקָּ֣הֲל֔וּ and they gathered qāhal עַל themselves together against ʿal מֹשֶׁ֖ה Moses mōše וְעַֽל and against ʿal אַהֲרֹֽן׃ Aaron. ʾahărôn

וַיָּ֥רֶב chode rîb הָעָ֖ם And the people ʿam עִם with ʿim מֹשֶׁ֑ה Moses, mōše וַיֹּֽאמְר֣וּ and spake, ʾāmar לֵאמֹ֔ר saying, ʾāmar וְל֥וּ Would God that lûʾ גָוַ֛עְנוּ we had died gāwaʿ בִּגְוַ֥ע died gāwaʿ אַחֵ֖ינוּ when our brethren ʾāḥ לִפְנֵ֥י before pānîm יְהוָֽה׃ the Lord! yĕhōwâ

וְלָמָ֤ה And why mâ הֲבֵאתֶם֙ have ye brought up bôʾ אֶת ʾēt קְהַ֣ל the congregation qāhāl יְהוָ֔ה of the Lord yĕhōwâ אֶל into ʾēl הַמִּדְבָּ֖ר wilderness, midbār הַזֶּ֑ה this ze לָמ֣וּת should die mût שָׁ֔ם there? šām אֲנַ֖חְנוּ that we ʾănaḥnû וּבְעִירֵֽנוּ׃ and our cattle bĕʿîr

וְלָמָ֤ה And wherefore mâ הֶֽעֱלִיתֻ֙נוּ֙ have ye made us to come up ʿālâ מִמִּצְרַ֔יִם out of Egypt, miṣrayim לְהָבִ֣יא to bring bôʾ אֹתָ֔נוּ us in ʾēt אֶל unto ʾēl הַמָּק֥וֹם place? māqôm הָרָ֖ע evil raʿ הַזֶּ֑ה this ze לֹ֣א׀ it no lōʾ מְק֣וֹם place māqôm זֶ֗רַע of seed, zeraʿ וּתְאֵנָ֤ה or of figs, tĕʾēn וְגֶ֙פֶן֙ or of vines, gepen וְרִמּ֔וֹן or of pomegranates; rimmôn וּמַ֥יִם there any water mayim אַ֖יִן neither ʾayin לִשְׁתּֽוֹת׃ to drink. šātâ

וַיָּבֹא֩ went bôʾ מֹשֶׁ֨ה And Moses mōše וְאַֽהֲרֹ֜ן and Aaron ʾahărôn מִפְּנֵ֣י from the presence pānîm הַקָּהָ֗ל of the assembly qāhāl אֶל unto ʾēl פֶּ֙תַח֙ the door petaḥ אֹ֣הֶל of the tabernacle ʾōhel מוֹעֵ֔ד of the congregation, môʿēd וַֽיִּפְּל֖וּ and they fell nāpal עַל upon ʿal פְּנֵיהֶ֑ם their faces: pānîm וַיֵּרָ֥א appeared rāʾâ כְבוֹד and the glory kābôd יְהוָ֖ה of the Lord yĕhōwâ אֲלֵיהֶֽם׃ unto them. ʾēl

וַיְדַבֵּ֥ר spake dābar יְהוָ֖ה And the Lord yĕhōwâ אֶל unto ʾēl מֹשֶׁ֥ה Moses, mōše לֵּאמֹֽר׃ saying, ʾāmar

קַ֣ח Take lāqaḥ אֶת ʾēt הַמַּטֶּ֗ה the rod, maṭṭe וְהַקְהֵ֤ל and gather qāhal אֶת together, ʾēt הָֽעֵדָה֙ thou the assembly ʿēdâ אַתָּה֙ thou, ʾattâ וְאַֽהֲרֹ֣ן and Aaron ʾahărôn אָחִ֔יךָ thy brother, ʾāḥ וְדִבַּרְתֶּ֧ם and speak dābar אֶל ye unto ʾēl הַסֶּ֛לַע the rock selaʿ לְעֵֽינֵיהֶ֖ם before their eyes; ʿayin וְנָתַ֣ן and it shall give forth nātan מֵימָ֑יו his water, mayim וְהֽוֹצֵאתָ֙ and thou shalt bring forth yāṣāʾ לָהֶ֥ם מַ֙יִם֙ to them water mayim מִן out of min הַסֶּ֔לַע the rock: selaʿ וְהִשְׁקִיתָ֥ drink. šāqâ אֶת so thou shalt give ʾēt הָֽעֵדָ֖ה the congregation ʿēdâ וְאֶת ʾēt בְּעִירָֽם׃ and their beasts bĕʿîr

וַיִּקַּ֥ח took lāqaḥ מֹשֶׁ֛ה And Moses mōše אֶת ʾēt הַמַּטֶּ֖ה the rod maṭṭe מִלִּפְנֵ֣י from before pānîm יְהוָ֑ה the Lord, yĕhōwâ כַּֽאֲשֶׁ֖ר as ʾăšer צִוָּֽהוּ׃ he commanded him. ṣāwâ

וַיַּקְהִ֜לוּ gathered qāhal מֹשֶׁ֧ה And Moses mōše וְאַֽהֲרֹ֛ן and Aaron ʾahărôn אֶת together ʾēt הַקָּהָ֖ל the congregation qāhāl אֶל ʾēl פְּנֵ֣י before pānîm הַסָּ֑לַע the rock, selaʿ וַיֹּ֣אמֶר and he said ʾāmar לָהֶ֗ם שִׁמְעוּ unto them, Hear šāmaʿ נָא֙ now, nāʾ הַמֹּרִ֔ים ye rebels; mārâ הֲמִן out of min הַסֶּ֣לַע rock? selaʿ הַזֶּ֔ה this ze נוֹצִ֥יא must we fetch yāṣāʾ לָכֶ֖ם מָֽיִם׃ you water mayim

וַיָּ֨רֶם lifted up rûm מֹשֶׁ֜ה And Moses mōše אֶת ʾēt יָד֗וֹ his hand, yād וַיַּ֧ךְ he smote nākâ אֶת ʾēt הַסֶּ֛לַע the rock selaʿ בְּמַטֵּ֖הוּ and with his rod maṭṭe פַּֽעֲמָ֑יִם twice: paʿam וַיֵּֽצְאוּ֙ came out yāṣāʾ מַ֣יִם and the water mayim רַבִּ֔ים abundantly, rab וַתֵּ֥שְׁתְּ drank, šātâ הָֽעֵדָ֖ה and the congregation ʿēdâ וּבְעִירָֽם׃ and their beasts bĕʿîr

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר spake ʾāmar יְהוָה֮ And the Lord yĕhōwâ אֶל unto ʾēl מֹשֶׁ֣ה Moses mōše וְאֶֽל into ʾēl אַהֲרֹן֒ and Aaron, ʾahărôn יַ֚עַן Because yaʿan לֹֽא me not, lōʾ הֶאֱמַנְתֶּ֣ם ye believed ʾāman בִּ֔י לְהַ֨קְדִּישֵׁ֔נִי to sanctify qādaš לְעֵינֵ֖י me in the eyes ʿayin בְּנֵ֣י of the children bēn יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל of Israel, yiśrāʾēl לָכֵ֗ן therefore kēn לֹ֤א ye shall not lōʾ תָבִ֙יאוּ֙ bring bôʾ אֶת ʾēt הַקָּהָ֣ל congregation qāhāl הַזֶּ֔ה this ze אֶל ʾēl הָאָ֖רֶץ the land ʾereṣ אֲשֶׁר which ʾăšer נָתַ֥תִּי I have given them. nātan לָהֶֽם׃

הֵ֚מָּה This hēm מֵ֣י the water mayim מְרִיבָ֔ה of Meribah; mĕrîbâ אֲשֶׁר because ʾăšer רָב֥וּ strove rîb בְנֵֽי the children bēn יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל of Israel yiśrāʾēl אֶת with ʾēt יְהוָ֑ה the Lord, yĕhōwâ וַיִּקָּדֵ֖שׁ and he was sanctified in them. qādaš בָּֽם׃

וַיִּשְׁלַ֨ח sent šālaḥ מֹשֶׁ֧ה And Moses mōše מַלְאָכִ֛ים messengers mălʾok מִקָּדֵ֖שׁ from Kadesh qādēš אֶל unto ʾēl מֶ֣לֶךְ the king melek אֱד֑וֹם of Edom, ʾĕdōm כֹּ֤ה Thus kō אָמַר֙ saith ʾāmar אָחִ֣יךָ thy brother ʾāḥ יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל Israel, yiśrāʾēl אַתָּ֣ה Thou ʾattâ יָדַ֔עְתָּ knowest yādaʿ אֵ֥ת ʾēt כָּל all kōl הַתְּלָאָ֖ה the travail tĕlāʾâ אֲשֶׁ֥ר that ʾăšer מְצָאָֽתְנוּ׃ hath befallen us: māṣāʾ

וַיֵּֽרְד֤וּ went down yārad אֲבֹתֵ֙ינוּ֙ How our fathers ʾāb מִצְרַ֔יְמָה into Egypt, miṣrayim וַנֵּ֥שֶׁב and we have dwelt yāšab בְּמִצְרַ֖יִם in Egypt miṣrayim יָמִ֣ים time; yôm רַבִּ֑ים a long rab וַיָּרֵ֥עוּ vexed rāʿaʿ לָ֛נוּ מִצְרַ֖יִם and the Egyptians miṣrayim וְלַֽאֲבֹתֵֽינוּ׃ us, and our fathers: ʾāb

וַנִּצְעַ֤ק And when we cried ṣāʿaq אֶל unto ʾēl יְהוָה֙ the Lord, yĕhōwâ וַיִּשְׁמַ֣ע he heard šāmaʿ קֹלֵ֔נוּ our voice, qôl וַיִּשְׁלַ֣ח and sent šālaḥ מַלְאָ֔ךְ an angel, mălʾok וַיֹּֽצִאֵ֖נוּ and hath brought us forth yāṣāʾ מִמִּצְרָ֑יִם out of Egypt: miṣrayim וְהִנֵּה֙ and, behold, hinnē אֲנַ֣חְנוּ we ʾănaḥnû בְקָדֵ֔שׁ in Kadesh, qādēš עִ֖יר a city ʿîr קְצֵ֥ה in the uttermost qāṣe גְבוּלֶֽךָ׃ of thy border: gĕbûl

נַעְבְּרָה Let us pass, ʿābar נָּ֣א I pray thee, nāʾ בְאַרְצֶ֗ךָ through thy country: ʾereṣ לֹ֤א we will not lōʾ נַֽעֲבֹר֙ pass through ʿābar בְּשָׂדֶ֣ה the fields, śāde וּבְכֶ֔רֶם or through the vineyards, kerem וְלֹ֥א neither lōʾ נִשְׁתֶּ֖ה will we drink šātâ מֵ֣י the water mayim בְאֵ֑ר of the wells: bĕʾēr דֶּ֧רֶךְ way, derek הַמֶּ֣לֶךְ by the king's melek נֵלֵ֗ךְ we will go hālak לֹ֤א we will not lōʾ נִטֶּה֙ turn nāṭâ יָמִ֣ין to the right hand yāmîn וּשְׂמֹ֔אול nor to the left, śĕmōwl עַ֥ד until ʿad אֲשֶֽׁר ʾăšer נַעֲבֹ֖ר we have passed ʿābar גְּבֻלֶֽךָ׃ thy borders. gĕbûl

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר said ʾāmar אֵלָיו֙ unto ʾēl אֱד֔וֹם And Edom ʾĕdōm לֹ֥א him, Thou shalt not lōʾ תַֽעֲבֹ֖ר pass ʿābar בִּ֑י פֶּן by me, lest pēn בַּחֶ֖רֶב thee with the sword. ḥereb אֵצֵ֥א I come out yāṣāʾ לִקְרָאתֶֽךָ׃ against qirʾâ

וַיֹּֽאמְר֨וּ said ʾāmar אֵלָ֥יו unto ʾēl בְּנֵֽי And the children bēn יִשְׂרָאֵל֮ of Israel yiśrāʾēl בַּֽמְסִלָּ֣ה by the high way: mĕsillâ נַֽעֲלֶה֒ him, We will go ʿālâ וְאִם and if ʾim מֵימֶ֤יךָ of thy water, mayim נִשְׁתֶּה֙ drink šātâ אֲנִ֣י I ʾănî וּמִקְנַ֔י and my cattle miqne וְנָֽתַתִּ֖י then I will pay nātan מִכְרָ֑ם meker רַ֥ק for it: I will only, raq אֵין without ʾayin דָּבָ֖ר any thing dābār בְּרַגְלַ֥י on my feet. regel אֶֽעֱבֹֽרָה׃ go through ʿābar

וַיֹּ֖אמֶר And he said, ʾāmar לֹ֣א Thou shalt not lōʾ תַֽעֲבֹ֑ר go through. ʿābar וַיֵּצֵ֤א came out yāṣāʾ אֱדוֹם֙ And Edom ʾĕdōm לִקְרָאת֔וֹ against qirʾâ בְּעַ֥ם people, ʿam כָּבֵ֖ד him with much kābēd וּבְיָ֥ד hand. yād חֲזָקָֽה׃ and with a strong ḥāzāq

וַיְמָאֵ֣ן׀ refused māʾēn אֱד֗וֹם Thus Edom ʾĕdōm נְתֹן֙ to give nātan אֶת ʾēt יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל Israel yiśrāʾēl עֲבֹ֖ר passage ʿābar בִּגְבֻל֑וֹ through his border: gĕbûl וַיֵּ֥ט turned away nāṭâ יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל wherefore Israel yiśrāʾēl מֵֽעָלָֽיו׃ from him. ʿal

וַיִּסְע֖וּ journeyed nāsaʿ מִקָּדֵ֑שׁ from Kadesh, qādēš וַיָּבֹ֧אוּ and came bôʾ בְנֵֽי And the children bēn יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל of Israel, yiśrāʾēl כָּל the whole kōl הָֽעֵדָ֖ה congregation, ʿēdâ הֹ֥ר Hor. hōr הָהָֽר׃ unto mount har

וַיֹּ֧אמֶר spake ʾāmar יְהוָ֛ה And the Lord yĕhōwâ אֶל unto ʾēl מֹשֶׁ֥ה Moses mōše וְאֶֽל ʾēl אַהֲרֹ֖ן and Aaron ʾahărôn בְּהֹ֣ר Hor, hōr הָהָ֑ר in mount har עַל by ʿal גְּב֥וּל the coast gĕbûl אֶֽרֶץ of the land ʾereṣ אֱד֖וֹם of Edom, ʾĕdōm לֵאמֹֽר׃ saying, ʾāmar

יֵֽאָסֵ֤ף shall be gathered ʾāsap אַֽהֲרֹן֙ Aaron ʾahărôn אֶל unto ʾēl עַמָּ֔יו his people: ʿam כִּ֣י for kî לֹ֤א he shall not lōʾ יָבֹא֙ enter bôʾ אֶל into ʾēl הָאָ֔רֶץ the land ʾereṣ אֲשֶׁ֥ר which ʾăšer נָתַ֖תִּי I have given nātan לִבְנֵ֣י unto the children bēn יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל of Israel, yiśrāʾēl עַ֛ל because ʿal אֲשֶׁר ʾăšer מְרִיתֶ֥ם ye rebelled against mārâ אֶת ʾēt פִּ֖י my word pe לְמֵ֥י at the water mayim מְרִיבָֽה׃ of Meribah. mĕrîbâ

קַ֚ח Take lāqaḥ אֶֽת ʾēt אַהֲרֹ֔ן Aaron ʾahărôn וְאֶת ʾēt אֶלְעָזָ֖ר and Eleazar ʾelʿāzār בְּנ֑וֹ his son, bēn וְהַ֥עַל and bring them up ʿālâ אֹתָ֖ם ʾēt הֹ֥ר Hor: hōr הָהָֽר׃ unto mount har

וְהַפְשֵׁ֤ט And strip pāšaṭ אֶֽת ʾēt אַהֲרֹן֙ Aaron ʾahărôn אֶת ʾēt בְּגָדָ֔יו of his garments, beged וְהִלְבַּשְׁתָּ֖ם and put lābaš אֶת them upon ʾēt אֶלְעָזָ֣ר Eleazar ʾelʿāzār בְּנ֑וֹ his son: bēn וְאַֽהֲרֹ֥ן and Aaron ʾahărôn יֵֽאָסֵ֖ף shall be gathered ʾāsap וּמֵ֥ת and shall die mût שָֽׁם׃ there. šām

וַיַּ֣עַשׂ did ʿāśâ מֹשֶׁ֔ה And Moses mōše כַּֽאֲשֶׁ֖ר as ʾăšer צִוָּ֣ה commanded: ṣāwâ יְהוָ֑ה the Lord yĕhōwâ וַֽיַּעֲלוּ֙ and they went up ʿālâ אֶל into ʾēl הֹ֣ר Hor hōr הָהָ֔ר mount har לְעֵינֵ֖י in the sight ʿayin כָּל of all kōl הָֽעֵדָֽה׃ the congregation. ʿēdâ

וַיַּפְשֵׁט֩ stripped pāšaṭ מֹשֶׁ֨ה And Moses mōše אֶֽת ʾēt אַהֲרֹ֜ן Aaron ʾahărôn אֶת ʾēt בְּגָדָ֗יו of his garments, beged וַיַּלְבֵּ֤שׁ and put lābaš אֹתָם֙ them upon ʾēt אֶת ʾēt אֶלְעָזָ֣ר Eleazar ʾelʿāzār בְּנ֔וֹ his son; bēn וַיָּ֧מָת died mût אַֽהֲרֹ֛ן and Aaron ʾahărôn שָׁ֖ם there šām בְּרֹ֣אשׁ in the top rōš הָהָ֑ר of the mount: har וַיֵּ֧רֶד came down yārad מֹשֶׁ֛ה and Moses mōše וְאֶלְעָזָ֖ר and Eleazar ʾelʿāzār מִן from min הָהָֽר׃ the mount. har

וַיִּרְאוּ֙ saw rāʾâ כָּל And when all kōl הָ֣עֵדָ֔ה the congregation ʿēdâ כִּ֥י that kî גָוַ֖ע was dead, gāwaʿ אַֽהֲרֹ֑ן Aaron ʾahărôn וַיִּבְכּ֤וּ they mourned bākâ אֶֽת for ʾēt אַהֲרֹן֙ Aaron ʾahărôn שְׁלֹשִׁ֣ים thirty šĕlôšîm י֔וֹם days, yôm כֹּ֖ל all kōl בֵּ֥ית the house bayit יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ of Israel. yiśrāʾēl
