וַיְדַבֵּ֥ר spake dābar יְהוָ֖ה And the Lord yĕhōwâ אֶל unto ʾēl מֹשֶׁ֥ה Moses, mōše לֵּאמֹֽר׃ saying, ʾāmar

שְׁלַח Send šālaḥ לְךָ֣ אֲנָשִׁ֗ים thou men, ʾĕnôš וְיָתֻ֙רוּ֙ that they may search tûr אֶת ʾēt אֶ֣רֶץ the land ʾereṣ כְּנַ֔עַן of Canaan, kĕnaʿan אֲשֶׁר which ʾăšer אֲנִ֥י I ʾănî נֹתֵ֖ן give nātan לִבְנֵ֣י unto the children bēn יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל of Israel: yiśrāʾēl אִ֣ישׁ ʾîš אֶחָד֩ a ʾeḥād אִ֨ישׁ man, ʾîš אֶחָ֜ד ʾeḥād לְמַטֵּ֤ה of every tribe maṭṭe אֲבֹתָיו֙ of their fathers ʾāb תִּשְׁלָ֔חוּ shall ye send šālaḥ כֹּ֖ל every one kōl נָשִׂ֥יא a ruler among them. nāśîʾ בָהֶֽם׃

וַיִּשְׁלַ֨ח sent šālaḥ אֹתָ֥ם ʾēt מֹשֶׁ֛ה And Moses mōše מִמִּדְבַּ֥ר them from the wilderness midbār פָּארָ֖ן of Paran: pāʾrān עַל by ʿal פִּ֣י the commandment pe יְהוָ֑ה of the Lord yĕhōwâ כֻּלָּ֣ם all kōl אֲנָשִׁ֔ים men ʾîš רָאשֵׁ֥י heads rōš בְנֵֽי of the children bēn יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל of Israel. yiśrāʾēl הֵֽמָּה׃ those hēm

וְאֵ֖לֶּה And these ʾēlle שְׁמוֹתָ֑ם their names: šēm לְמַטֵּ֣ה of the tribe maṭṭe רְאוּבֵ֔ן of Reuben, rĕʾûbēn שַׁמּ֖וּעַ Shammua šammûaʿ בֶּן the son bēn זַכּֽוּר׃ of Zaccur. zakkûr

לְמַטֵּ֣ה Of the tribe maṭṭe שִׁמְע֔וֹן of Simeon, šimʿôn שָׁפָ֖ט Shaphat šāpāṭ בֶּן the son bēn חוֹרִֽי׃ of Hori. ḥōrî

לְמַטֵּ֣ה Of the tribe maṭṭe יְהוּדָ֔ה of Judah, yĕhûdâ כָּלֵ֖ב Caleb kālēb בֶּן the son bēn יְפֻנֶּֽה׃ of Jephunneh. yĕpunne

לְמַטֵּ֣ה Of the tribe maṭṭe יִשָּׂשכָ֔ר of Issachar, yiśśokār יִגְאָ֖ל Igal yigʾāl בֶּן the son bēn יוֹסֵֽף׃ of Joseph. yôsēp

לְמַטֵּ֥ה Of the tribe maṭṭe אֶפְרָ֖יִם of Ephraim, ʾeprayim הוֹשֵׁ֥עַ Oshea hôšēaʿ בִּן the son bēn נֽוּן׃ of Nun. nûn

לְמַטֵּ֣ה Of the tribe maṭṭe בִנְיָמִ֔ן of Benjamin, binyāmîn פַּלְטִ֖י Palti palṭî בֶּן the son bēn רָפֽוּא׃ of Raphu. rāpûʾ

לְמַטֵּ֣ה Of the tribe maṭṭe זְבוּלֻ֔ן of Zebulun, zĕbûlûn גַּדִּיאֵ֖ל Gaddiel gaddîʾēl בֶּן the son bēn סוֹדִֽי׃ of Sodi. sôdî

לְמַטֵּ֥ה Of the tribe maṭṭe יוֹסֵ֖ף of Joseph, yôsēp לְמַטֵּ֣ה of the tribe maṭṭe מְנַשֶּׁ֑ה of Manasseh, mĕnašše גַּדִּ֖י Gaddi gaddî בֶּן the son bēn סוּסִֽי׃ of Susi. sûsî

לְמַטֵּ֣ה Of the tribe maṭṭe דָ֔ן of Dan, dān עַמִּיאֵ֖ל Ammiel ʿammîʾēl בֶּן the son bēn גְּמַלִּֽי׃ of Gemalli. gĕmallî

לְמַטֵּ֣ה Of the tribe maṭṭe אָשֵׁ֔ר of Asher, ʾāšēr סְת֖וּר Sethur sĕtûr בֶּן the son bēn מִֽיכָאֵֽל׃ of Michael. mîkāʾēl

לְמַטֵּ֣ה Of the tribe maṭṭe נַפְתָּלִ֔י of Naphtali, naptālî נַחְבִּ֖י Nahbi naḥbî בֶּן the son bēn וָפְסִֽי׃ of Vophsi. wopsî

לְמַטֵּ֣ה Of the tribe maṭṭe גָ֔ד of Gad, gād גְּאוּאֵ֖ל Geuel gĕʾûʾēl בֶּן the son bēn מָכִֽי׃ of Machi. mākî

אֵ֚לֶּה These ʾēlle שְׁמ֣וֹת the names šēm הָֽאֲנָשִׁ֔ים of the men ʾîš אֲשֶׁר which ʾăšer שָׁלַ֥ח sent šālaḥ מֹשֶׁ֖ה Moses mōše לָת֣וּר to spy out tûr אֶת ʾēt הָאָ֑רֶץ the land. ʾereṣ וַיִּקְרָ֥א called qārāʾ מֹשֶׁ֛ה And Moses mōše לְהוֹשֵׁ֥עַ Oshea hôšēaʿ בִּן the son bēn נ֖וּן of Nun nûn יְהוֹשֻֽׁעַ׃ Jehoshua. yĕhôšûaʿ

וַיִּשְׁלַ֤ח sent šālaḥ אֹתָם֙ ʾēt מֹשֶׁ֔ה And Moses mōše לָת֖וּר them to spy out tûr אֶת into ʾēt אֶ֣רֶץ the land ʾereṣ כְּנָ֑עַן of Canaan, kĕnaʿan וַיֹּ֣אמֶר and said ʾāmar אֲלֵהֶ֗ם unto ʾēl עֲל֥וּ them, Get you up ʿālâ זֶה֙ this ze בַּנֶּ֔גֶב southward, negeb וַֽעֲלִיתֶ֖ם and go up ʿālâ אֶת ʾēt הָהָֽר׃ the mountain: har

וּרְאִיתֶ֥ם And see rāʾâ אֶת ʾēt הָאָ֖רֶץ the land, ʾereṣ מַה what mâ הִ֑וא it hûʾ וְאֶת ʾēt הָעָם֙ and the people ʿam הַיֹּשֵׁ֣ב that dwelleth yāšab עָלֶ֔יהָ therein, ʿal הֶֽחָזָ֥ק strong ḥāzāq הוּא֙ whether they hûʾ הֲרָפֶ֔ה or weak, rāpe הַמְעַ֥ט few mĕʿaṭ ה֖וּא hûʾ אִם or ʾim רָֽב׃ many; rab

וּמָ֣ה And what mâ הָאָ֗רֶץ the land ʾereṣ אֲשֶׁר that ʾăšer הוּא֙ they hûʾ יֹשֵׁ֣ב dwell in, yāšab בָּ֔הּ הֲטוֹבָ֥ה good ṭôb הִ֖וא whether it hûʾ אִם or ʾim רָעָ֑ה bad; raʿ וּמָ֣ה and what mâ הֶֽעָרִ֗ים cities ʿîr אֲשֶׁר that ʾăšer הוּא֙ they hûʾ יוֹשֵׁ֣ב dwell yāšab בָּהֵ֔נָּה in, hēnnâ הַבְּמַֽחֲנִ֖ים whether in tents, maḥăne אִ֥ם or ʾim בְּמִבְצָרִֽים׃ in strong holds; mibṣār

וּמָ֣ה And what mâ הָ֠אָרֶץ the land ʾereṣ הַשְּׁמֵנָ֨ה fat šāmēn הִ֜וא whether it hûʾ אִם or ʾim רָזָ֗ה lean, rāze הֲיֵֽשׁ whether there be yēš בָּ֥הּ עֵץ֙ wood ʿēṣ אִם therein, or ʾim אַ֔יִן not. ʾayin וְהִ֨תְחַזַּקְתֶּ֔ם And be ye of good courage, ḥāzaq וּלְקַחְתֶּ֖ם and bring lāqaḥ מִפְּרִ֣י of the fruit pĕrî הָאָ֑רֶץ of the land. ʾereṣ וְהַ֨יָּמִ֔ים Now the time yôm יְמֵ֖י the time yôm בִּכּוּרֵ֥י of the firstripe bikkûr עֲנָבִֽים׃ grapes. ʿēnāb

וַֽיַּעֲל֖וּ So they went up, ʿālâ וַיָּתֻ֣רוּ and searched tûr אֶת ʾēt הָאָ֑רֶץ the land ʾereṣ מִמִּדְבַּר from the wilderness midbār צִ֥ן of Zin ṣin עַד unto ʿad רְחֹ֖ב Rehob, rĕḥōb לְבֹ֥א as men come bôʾ חֲמָֽת׃ to Hamath. ḥămāt

וַיַּֽעֲל֣וּ And they ascended ʿālâ בַנֶּגֶב֮ by the south, negeb וַיָּבֹ֣א and came bôʾ עַד unto ʿad חֶבְרוֹן֒ Hebron; ḥebrôn וְשָׁ֤ם where šām אֲחִימַן֙ Ahiman, ʾăḥîman שֵׁשַׁ֣י Sheshai, šēšay וְתַלְמַ֔י and Talmai, talmay יְלִידֵ֖י the children yālîd הָֽעֲנָ֑ק of Anak, ʿānāq וְחֶבְר֗וֹן (Now Hebron ḥebrôn שֶׁ֤בַע seven šebaʿ שָׁנִים֙ years šāne נִבְנְתָ֔ה was built bānâ לִפְנֵ֖י before pānîm צֹ֥עַן Zoan ṣōʿan מִצְרָֽיִם׃ in Egypt.) miṣrayim

וַיָּבֹ֜אוּ And they came bôʾ עַד unto ʿad נַ֣חַל the brook naḥal אֶשְׁכֹּ֗ל of Eshcol, ʾeškōl וַיִּכְרְת֨וּ and cut down kārat מִשָּׁ֤ם from thence šām זְמוֹרָה֙ a branch zĕmôrâ וְאֶשְׁכּ֤וֹל cluster ʾeškôl עֲנָבִים֙ of grapes, ʿēnāb אֶחָ֔ד with one ʾeḥād וַיִּשָּׂאֻ֥הוּ and they bare nāśāʾ בַמּ֖וֹט upon a staff; môṭ בִּשְׁנָ֑יִם it between two šĕnayim וּמִן and of min הָֽרִמֹּנִ֖ים the pomegranates, rimmôn וּמִן and of min הַתְּאֵנִֽים׃ the figs. tĕʾēn

לַמָּק֣וֹם The place māqôm הַה֔וּא hûʾ קָרָ֖א was called qārāʾ נַ֣חַל the brook naḥal אֶשְׁכּ֑וֹל Eshcol, ʾeškōl עַ֚ל because ʿal אֹד֣וֹת of ʾôdôt הָֽאֶשְׁכּ֔וֹל the cluster of grapes ʾeškôl אֲשֶׁר which ʾăšer כָּֽרְת֥וּ cut down kārat מִשָּׁ֖ם from thence. šām בְּנֵ֥י the children bēn יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ of Israel yiśrāʾēl

וַיָּשֻׁ֖בוּ And they returned šûb מִתּ֣וּר from searching tûr הָאָ֑רֶץ of the land ʾereṣ מִקֵּ֖ץ after qēṣ אַרְבָּעִ֥ים forty ʾarbāʿîm יֽוֹם׃ days. yôm

וַיֵּֽלְכ֡וּ And they went hālak וַיָּבֹאוּ֩ and came bôʾ אֶל to ʾēl מֹשֶׁ֨ה Moses, mōše וְאֶֽל and to ʾēl אַהֲרֹ֜ן Aaron, ʾahărôn וְאֶל and to ʾēl כָּל all kōl עֲדַ֧ת the congregation ʿēdâ בְּנֵֽי of the children bēn יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל of Israel, yiśrāʾēl אֶל unto ʾēl מִדְבַּ֥ר the wilderness midbār פָּארָ֖ן of Paran, pāʾrān קָדֵ֑שָׁה to Kadesh; qādēš וַיָּשִׁ֨יבוּ and brought back šûb אֹתָ֤ם them ʾēt דָּבָר֙ word dābār וְאֶת ʾēt כָּל unto them, and unto all kōl הָ֣עֵדָ֔ה the congregation, ʿēdâ וַיַּרְא֖וּם and shewed rāʾâ אֶת ʾēt פְּרִ֥י the fruit pĕrî הָאָֽרֶץ׃ of the land. ʾereṣ

וַיְסַפְּרוּ And they told sāpar לוֹ֙ וַיֹּ֣אמְר֔וּ him, and said, ʾāmar בָּ֕אנוּ We came bôʾ אֶל unto ʾēl הָאָ֖רֶץ the land ʾereṣ אֲשֶׁ֣ר whither ʾăšer שְׁלַחְתָּ֑נוּ thou sentest šālaḥ וְ֠גַם us, and surely gam זָבַ֨ת floweth zûb חָלָ֥ב with milk ḥālāb וּדְבַ֛שׁ and honey; dĕbaš הִ֖וא it hûʾ וְזֶה and this ze פִּרְיָֽהּ׃ the fruit of it. pĕrî

אֶ֚פֶס Nevertheless ʾepes כִּֽי kî עַ֣ז strong ʿaz הָעָ֔ם the people ʿam הַיֹּשֵׁ֖ב that dwell yāšab בָּאָ֑רֶץ in the land, ʾereṣ וְהֶֽעָרִ֗ים and the cities ʿîr בְּצֻר֤וֹת walled, bāṣar גְּדֹלֹת֙ great: gādôl מְאֹ֔ד very mĕʾōd וְגַם and moreover gam יְלִדֵ֥י the children yālîd הָֽעֲנָ֖ק of Anak ʿānāq רָאִ֥ינוּ we saw rāʾâ שָֽׁם׃ there. šām

עֲמָלֵ֥ק The Amalekites ʿămālēq יוֹשֵׁ֖ב dwell yāšab בְּאֶ֣רֶץ in the land ʾereṣ הַנֶּ֑גֶב of the south: negeb וְ֠הַֽחִתִּי and the Hittites, ḥittî וְהַיְבוּסִ֤י and the Jebusites, yĕbûsî וְהָֽאֱמֹרִי֙ and the Amorites, ʾĕmōrî יוֹשֵׁ֣ב dwell yāšab בָּהָ֔ר in the mountains: har וְהַֽכְּנַעֲנִי֙ and the Canaanites kĕnaʿanî יוֹשֵׁ֣ב dwell yāšab עַל by ʿal הַיָּ֔ם the sea, yām וְעַ֖ל and by ʿal יַ֥ד the coast yād הַיַּרְדֵּֽן׃ of Jordan. yardēn

וַיַּ֧הַס stilled hāsâ כָּלֵ֛ב And Caleb kālēb אֶת ʾēt הָעָ֖ם the people ʿam אֶל before ʾēl מֹשֶׁ֑ה Moses, mōše וַיֹּ֗אמֶר and said, ʾāmar עָלֹ֤ה Let us go up ʿālâ נַֽעֲלֶה֙ at once, ʿālâ וְיָרַ֣שְׁנוּ and possess yāraš אֹתָ֔הּ ʾēt כִּֽי it; for kî יָכ֥וֹל we are well able yākōl נוּכַ֖ל to overcome it. yākōl לָֽהּ׃

וְהָ֨אֲנָשִׁ֜ים But the men ʾîš אֲשֶׁר that ʾăšer עָל֤וּ went up ʿālâ עִמּוֹ֙ with ʿim אָֽמְר֔וּ him said, ʾāmar לֹ֥א lōʾ נוּכַ֖ל We be not able yākōl לַֽעֲל֣וֹת to go up ʿālâ אֶל against ʾēl הָעָ֑ם the people; ʿam כִּֽי for kî חָזָ֥ק stronger ḥāzāq ה֖וּא they hûʾ מִמֶּֽנּוּ׃ than we. min

וַיֹּצִ֜יאוּ And they brought up yāṣāʾ דִּבַּ֤ת an evil report dibbâ הָאָ֙רֶץ֙ of the land ʾereṣ אֲשֶׁ֣ר which ʾăšer תָּר֣וּ they had searched tûr אֹתָ֔הּ ʾēt אֶל unto ʾēl בְּנֵ֥י the children bēn יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל of Israel, yiśrāʾēl לֵאמֹ֑ר saying, ʾāmar הָאָ֡רֶץ The land, ʾereṣ אֲשֶׁר֩ through which ʾăšer עָבַ֨רְנוּ we have gone ʿābar בָ֜הּ לָת֣וּר to search tûr אֹתָ֗הּ ʾēt אֶ֣רֶץ it, a land ʾereṣ אֹכֶ֤לֶת eateth up ʾākal יֽוֹשְׁבֶ֙יהָ֙ the inhabitants yāšab הִ֔וא that hûʾ וְכָל thereof; and all kōl הָעָ֛ם the people ʿam אֲשֶׁר that ʾăšer רָאִ֥ינוּ we saw rāʾâ בְתוֹכָ֖הּ in it tāwek אַנְשֵׁ֥י men ʾîš מִדּֽוֹת׃ of a great stature. middâ

וְשָׁ֣ם And there šām רָאִ֗ינוּ we saw rāʾâ אֶת ʾēt הַנְּפִילִ֛ים the giants, nĕpîl בְּנֵ֥י the sons bēn עֲנָ֖ק of Anak, ʿānāq מִן of min הַנְּפִלִ֑ים the giants: nĕpîl וַנְּהִ֤י and we were hāyâ בְעֵינֵ֙ינוּ֙ in our own sight ʿayin כַּֽחֲגָבִ֔ים as grasshoppers, ḥāgāb וְכֵ֥ן and so kēn הָיִ֖ינוּ we were hāyâ בְּעֵֽינֵיהֶֽם׃ in their sight. ʿayin
