22 When Abimelech had reigned three years over Israel,

23 Then God sent an evil spirit between Abimelech and the men of Shechem; and the men of Shechem dealt treacherously with Abimelech:

24 That the cruelty done to the threescore and ten sons of Jerubbaal might come, and their blood be laid upon Abimelech their brother, which slew them; and upon the men of Shechem, which aided him in the killing of his brethren.

25 And the men of Shechem set liers in wait for him in the top of the mountains, and they robbed all that came along that way by them: and it was told Abimelech.

26 And Gaal the son of Ebed came with his brethren, and went over to Shechem: and the men of Shechem put their confidence in him.

27 And they went out into the fields, and gathered their vineyards, and trode the grapes, and made merry, and went into the house of their god, and did eat and drink, and cursed Abimelech.

28 And Gaal the son of Ebed said, Who is Abimelech, and who is Shechem, that we should serve him? is not he the son of Jerubbaal? and Zebul his officer? serve the men of Hamor the father of Shechem: for why should we serve him?

29 And would to God this people were under my hand! then would I remove Abimelech. And he said to Abimelech, Increase thine army, and come out.

30 And when Zebul the ruler of the city heard the words of Gaal the son of Ebed, his anger was kindled.

31 And he sent messengers unto Abimelech privily, saying, Behold, Gaal the son of Ebed and his brethren be come to Shechem; and, behold, they fortify the city against thee.

32 Now therefore up by night, thou and the people that is with thee, and lie in wait in the field:

33 And it shall be, that in the morning, as soon as the sun is up, thou shalt rise early, and set upon the city: and, behold, when he and the people that is with him come out against thee, then mayest thou do to them as thou shalt find occasion.

34 And Abimelech rose up, and all the people that were with him, by night, and they laid wait against Shechem in four companies.

35 And Gaal the son of Ebed went out, and stood in the entering of the gate of the city: and Abimelech rose up, and the people that were with him, from lying in wait.

36 And when Gaal saw the people, he said to Zebul, Behold, there come people down from the top of the mountains. And Zebul said unto him, Thou seest the shadow of the mountains as if they were men.

37 And Gaal spake again and said, See there come people down by the middle of the land, and another company come along by the plain of Meonenim.

38 Then said Zebul unto him, Where is now thy mouth, wherewith thou saidst, Who is Abimelech, that we should serve him? is not this the people that thou hast despised? go out, I pray now, and fight with them.

39 And Gaal went out before the men of Shechem, and fought with Abimelech.

40 And Abimelech chased him, and he fled before him, and many were overthrown and wounded, even unto the entering of the gate.

41 And Abimelech dwelt at Arumah: and Zebul thrust out Gaal and his brethren, that they should not dwell in Shechem.

42 And it came to pass on the morrow, that the people went out into the field; and they told Abimelech.

43 And he took the people, and divided them into three companies, and laid wait in the field, and looked, and, behold, the people were come forth out of the city; and he rose up against them, and smote them.

44 And Abimelech, and the company that was with him, rushed forward, and stood in the entering of the gate of the city: and the two other companies ran upon all the people that were in the fields, and slew them.

45 And Abimelech fought against the city all that day; and he took the city, and slew the people that was therein, and beat down the city, and sowed it with salt.

46 And when all the men of the tower of Shechem heard that, they entered into an hold of the house of the god Berith.

47 And it was told Abimelech, that all the men of the tower of Shechem were gathered together.

48 And Abimelech gat him up to mount Zalmon, he and all the people that were with him; and Abimelech took an axe in his hand, and cut down a bough from the trees, and took it, and laid it on his shoulder, and said unto the people that were with him, What ye have seen me do, make haste, and do as I have done.

49 And all the people likewise cut down every man his bough, and followed Abimelech, and put them to the hold, and set the hold on fire upon them; so that all the men of the tower of Shechem died also, about a thousand men and women.

22 അബിമേലെക്ക് യിസ്രായേലിനെ മൂന്നു സംവത്സരം ഭരിച്ചശേഷം
When Abimelech had reigned three years over Israel,

23 ദൈവം അബീമേലെക്കിന്നും ശെഖേംപൌരന്മാർക്കും തമ്മിൽ ഛിദ്രബുദ്ധി വരുത്തി; ശെഖേംപൌരന്മാർ അബീമേലെക്കിനോടു ദ്രോഹം തുടങ്ങി;
Then God sent an evil spirit between Abimelech and the men of Shechem; and the men of Shechem dealt treacherously with Abimelech:

24 അങ്ങനെ യെരുബ്ബാലിന്റെ എഴുപതു പുത്രന്മാരോടും ചെയ്ത പാതകത്തിന്നു പ്രതികാരം വരികയും അവരുടെ രക്തം അവരെ കൊന്നവനായ അവരുടെ സഹോദരൻ അബീമേലെക്കും അവന്റെ സഹോദരന്മാരെ കൊല്ലുവാൻ അവന്നു തുണയായിരുന്ന ശെഖേം പൌരന്മാരും ചുമക്കയും ചെയ്തു.
That the cruelty done to the threescore and ten sons of Jerubbaal might come, and their blood be laid upon Abimelech their brother, which slew them; and upon the men of Shechem, which aided him in the killing of his brethren.

25 ശെഖേംപൌരന്മാർ മലമുകളിൽ അവന്നു വിരോധമായി പതിയിരിപ്പുകാരെ ആക്കി, ഇവർ തങ്ങളുടെ സമീപത്തുകൂടി വഴിപേുകന്ന എല്ലാവരോടും കവർച്ച തുടങ്ങി; ഇതിനെക്കുറിച്ചു അബീമേലെക്കിന്നു അറിവുകിട്ടി.
And the men of Shechem set liers in wait for him in the top of the mountains, and they robbed all that came along that way by them: and it was told Abimelech.

26 അപ്പോൾ ഏബെദിന്റെ മകനായ ഗാലും അവന്റെ സഹോദരന്മാരും വന്നു ശെഖേമിൽ കടന്നു; ശെഖേംപൌരന്മാർ അവനെ വിശ്വസിച്ചു.
And Gaal the son of Ebed came with his brethren, and went over to Shechem: and the men of Shechem put their confidence in him.

27 അവർ വയലിൽ ചെന്നു തങ്ങളുടെ മുന്തിരിത്തോട്ടങ്ങളിലെ കുല അറുത്തു ഉത്സവം കൊണ്ടാടി; തങ്ങളുടെ ദേവന്റെ ക്ഷേത്ത്രിൽ ചെന്നു തിന്നുകുടിക്കയും അബീമേലെക്കിനെ ശപിക്കയും ചെയ്തു
And they went out into the fields, and gathered their vineyards, and trode the grapes, and made merry, and went into the house of their god, and did eat and drink, and cursed Abimelech.

28 ഏബെദിന്റെ മകനായ ഗാൽ പറഞ്ഞതു: അബീമേലെക്കിനെ നാം സേവിക്കേണ്ടതിന്നു അവൻ ആർ? ശെഖേം ആർ? അവൻ യെരുബ്ബാലിന്റെ മകനും സെബൂൽ അവന്റെ കാര്യസ്ഥനും അല്ലയോ? അവൻ ശെഖേമിന്റെ അപ്പനായ ഹാമോരിന്റെ ആളുകളുമായി അവനെ സേവിക്കട്ടെ; നാം അവനെ സേവിക്കുന്നതു എന്തിന്നു?
And Gaal the son of Ebed said, Who is Abimelech, and who is Shechem, that we should serve him? is not he the son of Jerubbaal? and Zebul his officer? serve the men of Hamor the father of Shechem: for why should we serve him?

29 ഈ ജനം എന്റെ കൈക്കീഴായിരുന്നെങ്കിൽ ഞാൻ അബീമേലെക്കിനെ നീക്കിക്കളകയും അബീമേലെക്കിനോടു: നിന്റെ സൈന്യത്തെ വർദ്ധിപ്പിച്ചു പുറപ്പെട്ടുവരിക എന്നു പറകയും ചെയ്യുമായിരുന്നു.
And would to God this people were under my hand! then would I remove Abimelech. And he said to Abimelech, Increase thine army, and come out.

30 ഏബേദിന്റെ മകനായ ഗാലിന്റെ വാക്കുകളെ കേട്ടപ്പോൾ നഗരാധിപനായ സെബൂലിന്റെ കോപം ജ്വലിച്ചു.
And when Zebul the ruler of the city heard the words of Gaal the son of Ebed, his anger was kindled.

31 അവൻ രഹസ്യമായിട്ടു അബീമേലെക്കിന്റെ അടുക്കൽ ദൂതന്മാരെ അയച്ചു: ഇതാ, ഏബെദിന്റെ മകനായ ഗാലും അവന്റെ സഹോദരന്മാരും ശെഖേമിൽ വന്നിരിക്കുന്നു; അവർ പട്ടണത്തെ നിന്നോടു മത്സരപ്പിക്കുന്നു.
And he sent messengers unto Abimelech privily, saying, Behold, Gaal the son of Ebed and his brethren be come to Shechem; and, behold, they fortify the city against thee.

32 ആകയാൽ നീയും നിന്നോടുകൂടെയുള്ള പടജ്ജനവും രാത്രിയിൽ പുറപ്പെട്ടു വയലിൽ പതിയിരിന്നുകൊൾവിൻ.
Now therefore up by night, thou and the people that is with thee, and lie in wait in the field:

33 രാവിലെ സൂര്യൻ ഉദിക്കുമ്പോൾ എഴുന്നേറ്റു പട്ടണത്തെ ആക്രമിക്ക; എന്നാൽ അവനും കൂടെയുള്ള പടജ്ജനവും നിന്റെ നേരെ പുറപ്പെടുമ്പോൾ തരംപോലെ അവരോടു പ്രവർത്തിക്കാം എന്നു പറയിച്ചു.
And it shall be, that in the morning, as soon as the sun is up, thou shalt rise early, and set upon the city: and, behold, when he and the people that is with him come out against thee, then mayest thou do to them as thou shalt find occasion.

34 അങ്ങനെ അബീമേലെക്കും കൂടെയുള്ള പടജ്ജനമൊക്കെയും രാത്രിയിൽ പുറപ്പെട്ടു ശെഖേമിന്നരികെ നാലു കൂട്ടമായി പതിയിരുന്നു.
And Abimelech rose up, and all the people that were with him, by night, and they laid wait against Shechem in four companies.

35 ഏബെദിന്റെ മകനായ ഗാൽ പുറപ്പെട്ടു പട്ടണത്തിന്റെ ഗോപുരത്തിങ്കൽ നിന്നപ്പോൾ അബീമേലെക്കും കൂടെ ഉള്ള പടജ്ജനവും പതിയിരിപ്പിൽനിന്നു എഴുന്നേറ്റു.
And Gaal the son of Ebed went out, and stood in the entering of the gate of the city: and Abimelech rose up, and the people that were with him, from lying in wait.

36 ഗാൽ പടജ്ജനത്തെ കണ്ടപ്പോൾ: അതാ, പർവ്വതങ്ങളുടെ മകളിൽനിന്നു പടജ്ജനം ഇറങ്ങിവരുന്നു എന്നു സെബൂലിനോടു പറഞ്ഞു. സെബൂൽ അവനോടു: പർവ്വതങ്ങളുടെ നിഴൽ കണ്ടിട്ടു മനുഷ്യരെന്നു നിനക്കു തോന്നുകയാകുന്നു എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.
And when Gaal saw the people, he said to Zebul, Behold, there come people down from the top of the mountains. And Zebul said unto him, Thou seest the shadow of the mountains as if they were men.

37 ഗാൽ പിന്നെയും: അതാ, പടജ്ജനം ദേശമദ്ധ്യേ ഇറങ്ങിവരുന്നു; മറ്റൊരു കൂട്ടവും പ്രാശ്നികന്മാരുടെ കരുവേലകത്തിന്റെ സമീപത്തുകൂടി വരുന്നു എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.
And Gaal spake again and said, See there come people down by the middle of the land, and another company come along by the plain of Meonenim.

38 സെബൂൽ അവനോടു: നാം അബീമേലെക്കിനെ സേവിക്കേണ്ടതിന്നു അവൻ ആരെന്നു പറഞ്ഞ നിന്റെ വായ് ഇപ്പോൾ എവിടെ? ഇതു നീ പുച്ഛിച്ച പടജ്ജനം അല്ലയോ? ഇപ്പോൾ പുറപ്പെട്ടു അവരോടു പെരുക എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.
Then said Zebul unto him, Where is now thy mouth, wherewith thou saidst, Who is Abimelech, that we should serve him? is not this the people that thou hast despised? go out, I pray now, and fight with them.

39 അങ്ങനെ ഗാൽ ശെഖേംപൌരന്മാരുമായി പുറപ്പെട്ടു അബീമേലക്കിനോടു പടവെട്ടി.
And Gaal went out before the men of Shechem, and fought with Abimelech.

40 അബീമേലെക്കിന്റെ മുമ്പിൽ അവൻ തോറ്റോടി; അവൻ അവനെ പിന്തുടർന്നു പടിവാതിൽവരെ അനേകംപേർ ഹതന്മാരായി വീണു.
And Abimelech chased him, and he fled before him, and many were overthrown and wounded, even unto the entering of the gate.

41 അബീമേലെക്ക് അരൂമയിൽ താമസിച്ചു; സെബൂൽ ഗാലിനെയും സഹോദരന്മാരെയും ശെഖേമിൽ പാർപ്പാൻ സമ്മതിക്കാതെ അവിടെനിന്നു നീക്കിക്കളഞ്ഞു.
And Abimelech dwelt at Arumah: and Zebul thrust out Gaal and his brethren, that they should not dwell in Shechem.

42 പിറ്റെന്നാൾ ജനം വയലിലേക്കു പുറപ്പെട്ടു; അബീമേലെക്കിന്നു അതിനെക്കുറിച്ചു അറിവുകിട്ടി.
And it came to pass on the morrow, that the people went out into the field; and they told Abimelech.

43 അവൻ പടജ്ജനത്തെ കൂട്ടി മൂന്നു കൂട്ടമായി ഭാഗിച്ചു വയലിൽ പതിയിരുന്നു; ജനം പട്ടണത്തിൽനിന്നു പുറപ്പെട്ടുവരുന്നതു കണ്ടു അവരുടെ നേരെ ചെന്നു അവരെ സംഹരിച്ചു.
And he took the people, and divided them into three companies, and laid wait in the field, and looked, and, behold, the people were come forth out of the city; and he rose up against them, and smote them.

44 പിന്നെ അബീമേലെക്കും കൂടെയുള്ള കൂട്ടവും പാഞ്ഞുചെന്നു പട്ടണത്തിന്റെ പടിവാതിൽക്കൽ നിന്നു; മറ്റെ കൂട്ടം രണ്ടും വയലിലുള്ള സകലജനത്തിന്റെയും നേരെ പാഞ്ഞുചെന്നു അവരെ സംഹരിച്ചു.
And Abimelech, and the company that was with him, rushed forward, and stood in the entering of the gate of the city: and the two other companies ran upon all the people that were in the fields, and slew them.

45 അബീമേലെക്ക് അന്നു മുഴുവനും പട്ടണത്തോടു പൊരുതു പട്ടണം പിടിച്ചു അതിലെ ജനത്തെ കൊന്നു, പട്ടണത്തെ ഇടിച്ചുകളഞ്ഞു അതിൽ ഉപ്പു വിതറി.
And Abimelech fought against the city all that day; and he took the city, and slew the people that was therein, and beat down the city, and sowed it with salt.

46 ശെഖേംഗോപുരവാസികൾ എല്ലാവരും ഇതു കേട്ടപ്പോൾ ഏൽബെരീത്തിന്റെ ക്ഷേത്രമണ്ഡപത്തിൽ കടന്നു.
And when all the men of the tower of Shechem heard that, they entered into an hold of the house of the god Berith.

47 ശെഖേംഗോപുരവാസികൾ എല്ലാവരും ഒന്നിച്ചുകൂടിയിരിക്കുന്നു എന്നു അബീമേലെക്കിന്നു അറിവുകിട്ടി.
And it was told Abimelech, that all the men of the tower of Shechem were gathered together.

48 അബീമേലെക്കും കൂടെയുള്ള പടജ്ജനമൊക്കെയും സല്മോൻ മലയിൽ കയറി; അബീമേലെക്ക് കോടാലി എടുത്തു ഒരു മരക്കൊമ്പു വെട്ടി ചുമലിൽ വെച്ചു, തന്റെ പടജ്ജനത്തോടു: ഞാൻ ചെയ്തതു നോക്കി നിങ്ങളും വേഗം അതുപോലെ ചെയ്‍വിൻ എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.
And Abimelech gat him up to mount Zalmon, he and all the people that were with him; and Abimelech took an axe in his hand, and cut down a bough from the trees, and took it, and laid it on his shoulder, and said unto the people that were with him, What ye have seen me do, make haste, and do as I have done.

49 പടജ്ജനമെല്ലാം അതുപോലെ ഓരോരുത്തൻ ഓരോ കൊമ്പു വെട്ടി അബീമേലെക്കിന്റെ പിന്നാലെ ചെന്നു മണ്ഡപത്തിന്നരികെ ഇട്ടു തീ കൊടുത്തു മണ്ഡപത്തോടു കൂടെ അവരെ ചുട്ടുകളഞ്ഞു. അങ്ങനെ ശെഖേംഗോപുരവാസികളൊക്കെയും പുരുഷന്മാരും സ്ത്രീകളുമായി ഏകദേശം ആയിരം പേർ മരിച്ചുപോയി.
And all the people likewise cut down every man his bough, and followed Abimelech, and put them to the hold, and set the hold on fire upon them; so that all the men of the tower of Shechem died also, about a thousand men and women.
