1 അനന്തരം ദാവീദ് തന്നോടുകൂടെയുള്ള ജനത്തെ എണ്ണിനോക്കി; അവർക്കു സഹസ്രാധിപന്മാരെയും ശതാധിപന്മാരെയും നിയമിച്ചു.
2 ദാവീദ് ജനത്തിൽ മൂന്നിൽ ഒരു പങ്കു യോവാബിന്റെ കൈക്കീഴും മൂന്നിൽ ഒരു പങ്കു സെരൂയയുടെ മകനും യോവാബിന്റെ സഹോദരനും ആയ അബീശായിയുടെ കൈക്കീഴും മൂന്നിൽ ഒരു പങ്കു ഗിത്യനായ ഇത്ഥായിയുടെ കൈക്കീഴും അയച്ചു: ഞാനും നിങ്ങളോടുകൂടെ വരും എന്നു രാജാവു ജനത്തോടു പറഞ്ഞു.
3 എന്നാൽ ജനം: നീ വരേണ്ടാ; ഞങ്ങൾ തോറ്റോടി എന്നു വരികിൽ ഞങ്ങളുടെ കാര്യം ആരും ഗണ്യമാക്കുകയില്ല; ഞങ്ങളിൽ പാതിപേർ പട്ടുപോയി എന്നുവരികിലും അതാരും ഗണ്യമാക്കുകയില്ല; നീയോ ഞങ്ങളിൽ പതിനായിരം പേർക്കു തുല്യൻ. ആകയാൽ നീ പട്ടണത്തിൽ ഇരുന്നുകൊണ്ടു ഞങ്ങൾക്കു സഹായം ചെയ്യുന്നതു നല്ലതു എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.
4 രാജാവു അവരോടു: നിങ്ങൾക്കു ഉത്തമം എന്നു തോന്നുന്നതു ഞാൻ ചെയ്യാം എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു. പിന്നെ രാജാവു പടിവാതിൽക്കൽ നിന്നു; ജനമൊക്കെയും നൂറുനൂറായും ആയിരമായിരമായും പുറപ്പെട്ടു.
1 And David numbered the people that were with him, and set captains of thousands and captains of hundreds over them.
2 And David sent forth a third part of the people under the hand of Joab, and a third part under the hand of Abishai the son of Zeruiah, Joab’s brother, and a third part under the hand of Ittai the Gittite. And the king said unto the people, I will surely go forth with you myself also.
3 But the people answered, Thou shalt not go forth: for if we flee away, they will not care for us; neither if half of us die, will they care for us: but now thou art worth ten thousand of us: therefore now it is better that thou succour us out of the city.
4 And the king said unto them, What seemeth you best I will do. And the king stood by the gate side, and all the people came out by hundreds and by thousands.
