וַיְהִ֣י And it came to pass, hāyâ כִשְׁמֹ֣עַ heard šāmaʿ כָּֽל when all kōl הַמְּלָכִ֡ים the kings melek אֲשֶׁר֩ which ʾăšer בְּעֵ֨בֶר on this side ʿēber הַיַּרְדֵּ֜ן Jordan, yardēn בָּהָ֣ר in the hills, har וּבַשְּׁפֵלָ֗ה and in the valleys, šĕpēlâ וּבְכֹל֙ and in all kōl ח֚וֹף the coasts ḥôp הַיָּ֣ם sea yām הַגָּד֔וֹל of the great gādôl אֶל over ʾēl מ֖וּל against mûl הַלְּבָנ֑וֹן Lebanon, lĕbānôn הַֽחִתִּי֙ the Hittite, ḥittî וְהָ֣אֱמֹרִ֔י and the Amorite, ʾĕmōrî הַֽכְּנַעֲנִי֙ the Canaanite, kĕnaʿanî הַפְּרִזִּ֔י the Perizzite, pĕrizzî הַֽחִוִּ֖י the Hivite, ḥiwwî וְהַיְבוּסִֽי׃ and the Jebusite, yĕbûsî

וַיִּֽתְקַבְּצ֣וּ That they gathered themselves qābaṣ יַחְדָּ֔ו together, yaḥad לְהִלָּחֵ֥ם to fight lāḥam עִם with ʿim יְהוֹשֻׁ֖עַ Joshua yĕhôšûaʿ וְעִם and with ʿim יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל Israel, yiśrāʾēl פֶּ֖ה accord. pe אֶחָֽד׃ with one ʾeḥād

וְיֹֽשְׁבֵ֨י And when the inhabitants yāšab גִבְע֜וֹן of Gibeon gibʿôn שָֽׁמְע֗וּ heard šāmaʿ אֵת֩ ʾēt אֲשֶׁ֨ר what ʾăšer עָשָׂ֧ה had done ʿāśâ יְהוֹשֻׁ֛עַ Joshua yĕhôšûaʿ לִֽירִיח֖וֹ unto Jericho yĕrîḥô וְלָעָֽי׃ and to Ai, ʿay

וַיַּֽעֲשׂ֤וּ did work ʿāśâ גַם gam הֵ֙מָּה֙ They hēm בְּעָרְמָ֔ה wilily, ʿormâ וַיֵּֽלְכ֖וּ and went hālak וַיִּצְטַיָּ֑רוּ and made as if they had been ambassadors, ṣāyar וַיִּקְח֞וּ and took lāqaḥ שַׂקִּ֤ים sacks śaq בָּלִים֙ old bāle לַחֲמ֣וֹרֵיהֶ֔ם upon their asses, ḥămôr וְנֹאד֥וֹת bottles, nōd יַ֙יִן֙ and wine yayin בָּלִ֔ים old, bāle וּמְבֻקָּעִ֖ים and rent, bāqaʿ וּמְצֹֽרָרִֽים׃ and bound up; ṣārar

וּנְעָל֨וֹת shoes naʿal בָּל֤וֹת And old bāle וּמְטֻלָּאוֹת֙ and clouted ṭālāʾ בְּרַגְלֵיהֶ֔ם upon their feet, regel וּשְׂלָמ֥וֹת garments śalmâ בָּל֖וֹת and old bāle עֲלֵיהֶ֑ם upon ʿal וְכֹל֙ them; and all kōl לֶ֣חֶם the bread leḥem צֵידָ֔ם of their provision ṣayid יָבֵ֖שׁ was dry yābēš הָיָ֥ה hāyâ נִקֻּדִֽים׃ mouldy. niqqud

וַיֵּֽלְכ֧וּ And they went hālak אֶל to ʾēl יְהוֹשֻׁ֛עַ Joshua yĕhôšûaʿ אֶל unto ʾēl הַֽמַּחֲנֶ֖ה the camp maḥăne הַגִּלְגָּ֑ל at Gilgal, gilgāl וַיֹּֽאמְר֨וּ and said ʾāmar אֵלָ֜יו unto ʾēl וְאֶל him, and to ʾēl אִ֣ישׁ the men ʾîš יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל of Israel, yiśrāʾēl מֵאֶ֤רֶץ country: ʾereṣ רְחוֹקָה֙ from a far rāḥôq בָּ֔אנוּ We be come bôʾ וְעַתָּ֖ה now ʿattâ כִּרְתוּ therefore make kārat לָ֥נוּ בְרִֽית׃ ye a league with us. bĕrît

וַיֹּ֥אמֶרוּ said ʾāmar אִֽישׁ And the men ʾîš יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל of Israel yiśrāʾēl אֶל unto ʾēl הַֽחִוִּ֑י the Hivites, ḥiwwî אוּלַ֗י Peradventure ʾûlay בְּקִרְבִּי֙ among qereb אַתָּ֣ה ye ʾattâ יוֹשֵׁ֔ב dwell yāšab וְאֵ֖יךְ us; and how ʾêk אֶכְרָוֹת shall we make kārat לְךָ֥ kārat בְרִֽית׃ a league with you? bĕrît

וַיֹּֽאמְר֥וּ And they said ʾāmar אֶל unto ʾēl יְהוֹשֻׁ֖עַ Joshua, yĕhôšûaʿ עֲבָדֶ֣יךָ thy servants. ʿebed אֲנָ֑חְנוּ We ʾănaḥnû וַיֹּ֨אמֶר said ʾāmar אֲלֵיהֶ֧ם unto ʾēl יְהוֹשֻׁ֛עַ And Joshua yĕhôšûaʿ מִ֥י them, Who mî אַתֶּ֖ם ye? ʾattâ וּמֵאַ֥יִן and from whence ʾayin תָּבֹֽאוּ׃ come ye? bôʾ

וַיֹּֽאמְר֣וּ And they said ʾāmar אֵלָ֗יו unto ʾēl מֵאֶ֨רֶץ country ʾereṣ רְחוֹקָ֤ה far rāḥôq מְאֹד֙ him, From a very mĕʾōd בָּ֣אוּ are come bôʾ עֲבָדֶ֔יךָ thy servants ʿebed לְשֵׁ֖ם because of the name šēm יְהוָ֣ה of the Lord yĕhōwâ אֱלֹהֶ֑יךָ thy God: ʾĕlōhîm כִּֽי for kî שָׁמַ֣עְנוּ we have heard šāmaʿ שָׁמְע֔וֹ the fame šōmaʿ וְאֵ֛ת ʾēt כָּל of him, and all kōl אֲשֶׁ֥ר that ʾăšer עָשָׂ֖ה he did ʿāśâ בְּמִצְרָֽיִם׃ in Egypt, miṣrayim

וְאֵ֣ת׀ ʾēt כָּל And all kōl אֲשֶׁ֣ר that ʾăšer עָשָׂ֗ה he did ʿāśâ לִשְׁנֵי֙ to the two šĕnayim מַלְכֵ֣י kings melek הָֽאֱמֹרִ֔י of the Amorites, ʾĕmōrî אֲשֶׁ֖ר that ʾăšer בְּעֵ֣בֶר beyond ʿēber הַיַּרְדֵּ֑ן Jordan, yardēn לְסִיחוֹן֙ to Sihon sîḥôn מֶ֣לֶךְ king melek חֶשְׁבּ֔וֹן of Heshbon, ḥešbôn וּלְע֥וֹג and to Og ʿôg מֶֽלֶךְ king melek הַבָּשָׁ֖ן of Bashan, bāšān אֲשֶׁ֥ר which ʾăšer בְּעַשְׁתָּרֽוֹת׃ at Ashtaroth. ʿaštārôt

וַיֹּֽאמְר֣וּ spake ʾāmar אֵלֵ֡ינוּ to ʾēl זְֽקֵינֵינוּ֩ Wherefore our elders zāqēn וְכָל and all kōl יֹֽשְׁבֵ֨י the inhabitants yāšab אַרְצֵ֜נוּ of our country ʾereṣ לֵאמֹ֗ר us, saying, ʾāmar קְח֨וּ Take lāqaḥ בְיֶדְכֶ֤ם with you yād צֵידָה֙ victuals ṣêdâ לַדֶּ֔רֶךְ for the journey, derek וּלְכ֖וּ and go hālak לִקְרָאתָ֑ם to meet qirʾâ וַֽאֲמַרְתֶּ֤ם them, and say ʾāmar אֲלֵיהֶם֙ unto ʾēl עַבְדֵיכֶ֣ם your servants: ʿebed אֲנַ֔חְנוּ them, We ʾănaḥnû וְעַתָּ֖ה therefore now ʿattâ כִּרְתוּ make kārat לָ֥נוּ בְרִֽית׃ ye a league with us. bĕrît

זֶ֣ה׀ This ze לַחְמֵ֗נוּ our bread leḥem חָ֞ם we took hot ḥām הִצְטַיַּ֤דְנוּ our provision ṣûd אֹתוֹ֙ ʾēt מִבָּ֣תֵּ֔ינוּ out of our houses bayit בְּי֥וֹם on the day yôm צֵאתֵ֖נוּ we came forth yāṣāʾ לָלֶ֣כֶת to go hālak אֲלֵיכֶ֑ם unto ʾēl וְעַתָּה֙ you; but now, ʿattâ הִנֵּ֣ה behold, hinnē יָבֵ֔שׁ it is dry, yābēš וְהָיָ֖ה and it is hāyâ נִקֻּדִֽים׃ mouldy: niqqud

וְאֵ֨לֶּה And these ʾēlle נֹאד֤וֹת bottles nōd הַיַּ֙יִן֙ of wine, yayin אֲשֶׁ֣ר which ʾăšer מִלֵּ֣אנוּ we filled, mālēʾ חֲדָשִׁ֔ים new; ḥādoš וְהִנֵּ֖ה and, behold, hinnē הִתְבַּקָּ֑עוּ they be rent: bāqaʿ וְאֵ֤לֶּה and these ʾēlle שַׂלְמוֹתֵ֙ינוּ֙ our garments śalmâ וּנְעָלֵ֔ינוּ and our shoes naʿal בָּל֕וּ are become old bālâ מֵרֹ֥ב long rōb הַדֶּ֖רֶךְ journey. derek מְאֹֽד׃ by reason of the very mĕʾōd

וַיִּקְח֥וּ took lāqaḥ הָֽאֲנָשִׁ֖ים And the men ʾĕnôš מִצֵּידָ֑ם of their victuals, ṣayid וְאֶת ʾēt פִּ֥י at the mouth pe יְהוָ֖ה of the Lord. yĕhōwâ לֹ֥א not lōʾ שָׁאָֽלוּ׃ and asked šāʾal

וַיַּ֨עַשׂ made ʿāśâ לָהֶ֤ם יְהוֹשֻׁ֙עַ֙ And Joshua yĕhôšûaʿ שָׁל֔וֹם peace šālôm וַיִּכְרֹ֥ת with them, and made kārat לָהֶ֛ם בְּרִ֖ית a league bĕrît לְחַיּוֹתָ֑ם with them, to let them live: ḥāyâ וַיִּשָּֽׁבְע֣וּ sware unto them. šābaʿ לָהֶ֔ם נְשִׂיאֵ֖י and the princes nāśîʾ הָֽעֵדָֽה׃ of the congregation ʿēdâ

וַיְהִ֗י And it came to pass hāyâ מִקְצֵה֙ at the end qāṣe שְׁלֹ֣שֶׁת of three šālôš יָמִ֔ים days yôm אַֽחֲרֵ֕י after ʾaḥar אֲשֶׁר ʾăšer כָּֽרְת֥וּ they had made kārat לָהֶ֖ם בְּרִ֑ית a league bĕrît וַֽיִּשְׁמְע֗וּ with them, that they heard šāmaʿ כִּֽי that kî קְרֹבִ֥ים neighbours, qārôb הֵם֙ they hēm אֵלָ֔יו their ʾēl וּבְקִרְבּ֖וֹ among them. qereb הֵ֥ם and they hēm יֹֽשְׁבִֽים׃ dwelt yāšab

וַיִּסְע֣וּ journeyed, nāsaʿ בְנֵֽי And the children bēn יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל of Israel yiśrāʾēl וַיָּבֹ֛אוּ and came bôʾ אֶל unto ʾēl עָֽרֵיהֶ֖ם their cities ʿîr בַּיּ֣וֹם day. yôm הַשְּׁלִישִׁ֑י on the third šĕlîšî וְעָֽרֵיהֶם֙ Now their cities ʿîr גִּבְע֣וֹן Gibeon, gibʿôn וְהַכְּפִירָ֔ה and Chephirah, kĕpîrâ וּבְאֵר֖וֹת and Beeroth, bĕʾērôt וְקִרְיַ֥ת יְעָרִֽים׃ and Kirjath-jearim. qiryat yĕʿārîm

וְלֹ֤א them not, lōʾ הִכּוּם֙ smote nākâ בְּנֵ֣י And the children bēn יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל of Israel yiśrāʾēl כִּֽי because kî נִשְׁבְּע֤וּ had sworn šābaʿ לָהֶם֙ נְשִׂיאֵ֣י the princes nāśîʾ הָֽעֵדָ֔ה of the congregation ʿēdâ בַּֽיהוָ֖ה unto them by the Lord yĕhōwâ אֱלֹהֵ֣י God ʾĕlōhîm יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל of Israel. yiśrāʾēl וַיִּלֹּ֥נוּ murmured lûn כָל And all kōl הָֽעֵדָ֖ה the congregation ʿēdâ עַל against ʿal הַנְּשִׂיאִֽים׃ the princes. nāśîʾ

וַיֹּֽאמְר֤וּ said ʾāmar כָל But all kōl הַנְּשִׂיאִים֙ the princes nāśîʾ אֶל unto ʾēl כָּל all kōl הָ֣עֵדָ֔ה the congregation, ʿēdâ אֲנַ֙חְנוּ֙ We ʾănaḥnû נִשְׁבַּ֣עְנוּ have sworn šābaʿ לָהֶ֔ם בַּֽיהוָ֖ה unto them by the Lord yĕhōwâ אֱלֹהֵ֣י God ʾĕlōhîm יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל of Israel: yiśrāʾēl וְעַתָּ֕ה now ʿattâ לֹ֥א not lōʾ נוּכַ֖ל therefore we may yākōl לִנְגֹּ֥עַ touch them. nāgaʿ בָּהֶֽם׃

זֹ֛את This zōt נַֽעֲשֶׂ֥ה we will do ʿāśâ לָהֶ֖ם וְהַֽחֲיֵ֣ה to them; we will even let them live, ḥāyâ אוֹתָ֑ם ʾēt וְלֹֽא lest lōʾ יִֽהְיֶ֤ה be hāyâ עָלֵ֙ינוּ֙ upon ʿal קֶ֔צֶף wrath qeṣep עַל us, because of ʿal הַשְּׁבוּעָ֖ה the oath šĕbûʿâ אֲשֶׁר which ʾăšer נִשְׁבַּ֥עְנוּ we sware unto them. šābaʿ לָהֶֽם׃

וַיֹּֽאמְר֧וּ said ʾāmar אֲלֵיהֶ֛ם unto ʾēl הַנְּשִׂיאִ֖ים And the princes nāśîʾ יִֽחְי֑וּ them, Let them live; ḥāyâ וַ֠יִּֽהְיוּ but let them be hāyâ חֹֽטְבֵ֨י hewers ḥāṭab עֵצִ֤ים of wood ʿēṣ וְשֹֽׁאֲבֵי and drawers šāʾab מַ֙יִם֙ of water mayim לְכָל unto all kōl הָ֣עֵדָ֔ה the congregation; ʿēdâ כַּֽאֲשֶׁ֛ר as ʾăšer דִּבְּר֥וּ had promised them. dābar לָהֶ֖ם הַנְּשִׂיאִֽים׃ the princes nāśîʾ

וַיִּקְרָ֤א called qārāʾ לָהֶם֙ יְהוֹשֻׁ֔עַ And Joshua yĕhôšûaʿ וַיְדַבֵּ֥ר for them, and he spake dābar אֲלֵיהֶ֖ם unto ʾēl לֵאמֹ֑ר them, saying, ʾāmar לָמָּה֩ Wherefore mâ רִמִּיתֶ֨ם have ye beguiled rāmâ אֹתָ֜נוּ ʾēt לֵאמֹ֗ר us, saying, ʾāmar רְחוֹקִ֨ים far rāḥôq אֲנַ֤חְנוּ We ʾănaḥnû מִכֶּם֙ from min מְאֹ֔ד very mĕʾōd וְאַתֶּ֖ם you; when ye ʾattâ בְּקִרְבֵּ֥נוּ among us? qereb יֹֽשְׁבִֽים׃ dwell yāšab

וְעַתָּ֖ה Now ʿattâ אֲרוּרִ֣ים cursed, ʾārar אַתֶּ֑ם therefore ye ʾattâ וְלֹֽא and there shall none lōʾ יִכָּרֵ֨ת you be freed kārat מִכֶּ֜ם of min עֶ֗בֶד from being bondmen, ʿebed וְחֹֽטְבֵ֥י and hewers ḥāṭab עֵצִ֛ים of wood ʿēṣ וְשֹֽׁאֲבֵי and drawers šāʾab מַ֖יִם of water mayim לְבֵ֥ית for the house bayit אֱלֹהָֽי׃ of my God. ʾĕlōhîm

וַיַּֽעֲנ֨וּ And they answered ʿānâ אֶת ʾēt יְהוֹשֻׁ֜עַ Joshua, yĕhôšûaʿ וַיֹּֽאמְר֗וּ and said, ʾāmar כִּי֩ Because kî הֻגֵּ֨ד it was certainly nāgad הֻגַּ֤ד told nāgad לַֽעֲבָדֶ֙יךָ֙ thy servants, ʿebed אֵת֩ ʾēt אֲשֶׁ֨ר how that ʾăšer צִוָּ֜ה commanded ṣāwâ יְהוָ֤ה the Lord yĕhōwâ אֱלֹהֶ֙יךָ֙ thy God ʾĕlōhîm אֶת ʾēt מֹשֶׁ֣ה Moses mōše עַבְדּ֔וֹ his servant ʿebed לָתֵ֤ת to give nātan לָכֶם֙ אֶת ʾēt כָּל you all kōl הָאָ֔רֶץ the land, ʾereṣ וּלְהַשְׁמִ֛יד and to destroy šāmad אֶת ʾēt כָּל all kōl יֹֽשְׁבֵ֥י the inhabitants yāšab הָאָ֖רֶץ of the land ʾereṣ מִפְּנֵיכֶ֑ם from before pānîm וַנִּירָ֨א afraid yārēʾ מְאֹ֤ד you, therefore we were sore mĕʾōd לְנַפְשֹׁתֵ֙ינוּ֙ of our lives nepeš מִפְּנֵיכֶ֔ם because pānîm וַֽנַּעֲשֵׂ֖ה of you, and have done ʿāśâ אֶת ʾēt הַדָּבָ֥ר thing. dābār הַזֶּֽה׃ this ze

וְעַתָּ֖ה And now, ʿattâ הִנְנ֣וּ behold, we hinnē בְיָדֶ֑ךָ in thine hand: yād כַּטּ֨וֹב good ṭôb וְכַיָּשָׁ֧ר and right yāšār בְּעֵינֶ֛יךָ as it seemeth ʿayin לַֽעֲשׂ֥וֹת unto thee to do ʿāśâ לָ֖נוּ עֲשֵֽׂה׃ unto us, do. ʿāśâ

וַיַּ֥עַשׂ did ʿāśâ לָהֶ֖ם כֵּ֑ן And so kēn וַיַּצֵּ֥ל he unto them, and delivered nāṣal אוֹתָ֛ם ʾēt מִיַּ֥ד them out of the hand yād בְּנֵֽי of the children bēn יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל of Israel, yiśrāʾēl וְלֹ֥א them not. lōʾ הֲרָגֽוּם׃ that they slew hārag

וַיִּתְּנֵ֨ם made nātan יְהוֹשֻׁ֜עַ And Joshua yĕhôšûaʿ בַּיּ֣וֹם day yôm הַה֗וּא them that hûʾ חֹֽטְבֵ֥י hewers ḥāṭab עֵצִ֛ים of wood ʿēṣ וְשֹׁ֥אֲבֵי and drawers šāʾab מַ֖יִם of water mayim לָֽעֵדָ֑ה for the congregation, ʿēdâ וּלְמִזְבַּ֤ח and for the altar mizbēaḥ יְהוָה֙ of the Lord, yĕhōwâ עַד even unto ʿad הַיּ֣וֹם day, yôm הַזֶּ֔ה this ze אֶל in ʾēl הַמָּק֖וֹם the place māqôm אֲשֶׁ֥ר which ʾăšer יִבְחָֽר׃ he should choose. bāḥar
