דְּבַר The word dābār יְהוָה֙ of the Lord yĕhōwâ אֲשֶׁ֣ר that ʾăšer הָיָ֔ה came hāyâ אֶל to ʾēl יוֹאֵ֖ל Joel yôʾēl בֶּן the son bēn פְּתוּאֵֽל׃ of Pethuel. pĕtûʾēl

שִׁמְעוּ Hear šāmaʿ זֹאת֙ this, zōt הַזְּקֵנִ֔ים ye old men, zāqēn וְהַֽאֲזִ֔ינוּ and give ear, ʾāzan כֹּ֖ל all kōl יוֹשְׁבֵ֣י ye inhabitants yāšab הָאָ֑רֶץ of the land. ʾereṣ הֶהָ֤יְתָה been hāyâ זֹּאת֙ Hath this zōt בִּֽימֵיכֶ֔ם in your days, yôm וְאִ֖ם or even ʾim בִּימֵ֥י in the days yôm אֲבֹֽתֵיכֶֽם׃ of your fathers? ʾāb

עָלֶ֖יהָ of ʿal לִבְנֵיכֶ֣ם ye your children bēn סַפֵּ֑רוּ Tell sāpar וּבְנֵיכֶם֙ it, and your children bēn לִבְנֵיהֶ֔ם their children, bēn וּבְנֵיהֶ֖ם and their children bēn לְד֥וֹר generation. dôr אַחֵֽר׃ another ʾaḥēr

יֶ֤תֶר hath left yeter הַגָּזָם֙ That which the palmerworm gāzām אָכַ֣ל eaten; ʾākal הָֽאַרְבֶּ֔ה hath the locust ʾarbe וְיֶ֥תֶר hath left yeter הָאַרְבֶּ֖ה and that which the locust ʾarbe אָכַ֣ל eaten; ʾākal הַיָּ֑לֶק hath the cankerworm yeleq וְיֶ֣תֶר hath left yeter הַיֶּ֔לֶק and that which the cankerworm yeleq אָכַ֖ל eaten. ʾākal הֶחָסִֽיל׃ hath the caterpiller ḥāsîl

הָקִ֤יצוּ Awake, qûṣ שִׁכּוֹרִים֙ ye drunkards, šikkôr וּבְכ֔וּ and weep; bākâ וְהֵילִ֖לוּ and howl, yālal כָּל all kōl שֹׁ֣תֵי ye drinkers šātâ יָ֑יִן of wine, yayin עַל because of ʿal עָסִ֕יס the new wine; ʿāsîs כִּ֥י for kî נִכְרַ֖ת it is cut off kārat מִפִּיכֶֽם׃ from your mouth. pe

כִּֽי For kî גוֹי֙ a nation gôy עָלָ֣ה is come up ʿālâ עַל upon ʿal אַרְצִ֔י my land, ʾereṣ עָצ֖וּם strong, ʿāṣûm וְאֵ֣ין and without ʾayin מִסְפָּ֑ר number, mispār שִׁנָּיו֙ whose teeth šēn שִׁנֵּ֣י the teeth šēn אַרְיֵ֔ה of a lion, ʾărî וּֽמְתַלְּע֥וֹת and he hath the cheek teeth mĕtallĕʿâ לָבִ֖יא of a great lion. lābîʾ לֽוֹ׃

שָׂ֤ם He hath laid śûm גַּפְנִי֙ my vine gepen לְשַׁמָּ֔ה waste, šammâ וּתְאֵנָתִ֖י my fig tree: tĕʾēn לִקְצָפָ֑ה and barked qĕṣāpâ חָשֹׂ֤ף he hath made it clean ḥāśap חֲשָׂפָהּ֙ bare, ḥāśap וְהִשְׁלִ֔יךְ and cast away; šālak הִלְבִּ֖ינוּ thereof are made white. lāban שָׂרִיגֶֽיהָ׃ the branches śārîg

אֱלִ֕י Lament ʾālâ כִּבְתוּלָ֥ה like a virgin bĕtûlâ חֲגֻֽרַת girded ḥāgar שַׂ֖ק with sackcloth śaq עַל for ʿal בַּ֥עַל the husband baʿal נְעוּרֶֽיהָ׃ of her youth. nāʿûr

הָכְרַ֥ת is cut off kārat מִנְחָ֛ה The meat offering minḥâ וָנֶ֖סֶךְ and the drink offering nesek מִבֵּ֣ית from the house bayit יְהוָ֑ה of the Lord; yĕhōwâ אָֽבְלוּ֙ mourn. ʾābal הַכֹּ֣הֲנִ֔ים the priests, kōhēn מְשָׁרְתֵ֖י ministers, šārat יְהוָֽה׃ the Lord's yĕhōwâ

שֻׁדַּ֣ד is wasted, šādad שָׂדֶ֔ה The field śāde אָבְלָ֖ה mourneth; ʾābal אֲדָמָ֑ה the land ʾădāmâ כִּ֚י for kî שֻׁדַּ֣ד is wasted: šādad דָּגָ֔ן the corn dāgān הוֹבִ֥ישׁ is dried up, yābēš תִּיר֖וֹשׁ the new wine tîrôš אֻמְלַ֥ל languisheth. ʾāmal יִצְהָֽר׃ the oil yiṣhār

הֹבִ֣ישׁוּ Be ye ashamed, bûš אִכָּרִ֗ים O ye husbandmen; ʾikkār הֵילִ֙ילוּ֙ howl, yālal כֹּֽרְמִ֔ים O ye vinedressers, kōrēm עַל for ʿal חִטָּ֖ה the wheat ḥiṭṭâ וְעַל and for ʿal שְׂעֹרָ֑ה the barley; śĕʿōrâ כִּ֥י because kî אָבַ֖ד is perished. ʾābad קְצִ֥יר the harvest qāṣîr שָׂדֶֽה׃ of the field śāde

הַגֶּ֣פֶן The vine gepen הוֹבִ֔ישָׁה is dried up, yābēš וְהַתְּאֵנָ֖ה and the fig tree tĕʾēn אֻמְלָ֑לָה languisheth; ʾāmal רִמּ֞וֹן the pomegranate tree, rimmôn גַּם also, gam תָּמָ֣ר the palm tree tāmār וְתַפּ֗וּחַ and the apple tree, tappûaḥ כָּל all kōl עֲצֵ֤י the trees ʿēṣ הַשָּׂדֶה֙ of the field, śāde יָבֵ֔שׁוּ are withered: yābēš כִּֽי because kî הֹבִ֥ישׁ is withered away yābēš שָׂשׂ֖וֹן joy śāśôn מִן from min בְּנֵ֥י the sons bēn אָדָֽם׃ of men. ʾādām

חִגְר֨וּ Gird ḥāgar וְסִפְד֜וּ yourselves, and lament, sāpad הַכֹּהֲנִ֗ים ye priests: kōhēn הֵילִ֙ילוּ֙ howl, yālal מְשָׁרְתֵ֣י ye ministers šārat מִזְבֵּ֔חַ of the altar: mizbēaḥ בֹּ֚אוּ come, bôʾ לִ֣ינוּ lie all night lûn בַשַּׂקִּ֔ים in sackcloth, śaq מְשָׁרְתֵ֖י ye ministers šārat אֱלֹהָ֑י of my God: ʾĕlōhîm כִּ֥י for kî נִמְנַ֛ע is withholden mānaʿ מִבֵּ֥ית from the house bayit אֱלֹהֵיכֶ֖ם of your God. ʾĕlōhîm מִנְחָ֥ה the meat offering minḥâ וָנָֽסֶךְ׃ and the drink offering nesek

קַדְּשׁוּ Sanctify qādaš צוֹם֙ ye a fast, ṣôm קִרְא֣וּ call qārāʾ עֲצָרָ֔ה a solemn assembly, ʿăṣārâ אִסְפ֣וּ gather ʾāsap זְקֵנִ֗ים the elders zāqēn כֹּ֚ל all kōl יֹשְׁבֵ֣י the inhabitants yāšab הָאָ֔רֶץ of the land ʾereṣ בֵּ֖ית the house bayit יְהוָ֣ה of the Lord yĕhōwâ אֱלֹהֵיכֶ֑ם your God, ʾĕlōhîm וְזַעֲק֖וּ and cry zāʿaq אֶל unto ʾēl יְהוָֽה׃ the Lord, yĕhōwâ

אֲהָ֖הּ Alas ʾăhāh לַיּ֑וֹם for the day! yôm כִּ֤י for kî קָרוֹב֙ at hand, qārôb י֣וֹם the day yôm יְהוָ֔ה of the Lord yĕhōwâ וּכְשֹׁ֖ד and as a destruction šōd מִשַׁדַּ֥י from the Almighty šadday יָבֽוֹא׃ shall it come. bôʾ

הֲל֛וֹא Is not lōʾ נֶ֥גֶד before neged עֵינֵ֖ינוּ our eyes, ʿayin אֹ֣כֶל the meat ʾōkel נִכְרָ֑ת cut off kārat מִבֵּ֥ית from the house bayit אֱלֹהֵ֖ינוּ of our God? ʾĕlōhîm שִׂמְחָ֥ה joy śimḥâ וָגִֽיל׃ and gladness gîl

עָבְשׁ֣וּ is rotten ʿābaš פְרֻד֗וֹת The seed pĕrudâ תַּ֚חַת under taḥat מֶגְרְפֹ֣תֵיהֶ֔ם their clods, migrāpâ נָשַׁ֙מּוּ֙ are laid desolate, šāmēm אֹֽצָר֔וֹת the garners ʾôṣār נֶהֶרְס֖וּ are broken down; hāras מַמְּגֻר֑וֹת the barns mammĕgurâ כִּ֥י for kî הֹבִ֖ישׁ is withered. yābēš דָּגָֽן׃ the corn dāgān

מַה How mâ נֶּאֶנְחָ֣ה groan! ʾānaḥ בְהֵמָ֗ה do the beasts bĕhēmâ נָבֹ֙כוּ֙ are perplexed, bûk עֶדְרֵ֣י the herds ʿēder בָקָ֔ר of cattle bāqār כִּ֛י because kî אֵ֥ין they have no ʾayin מִרְעֶ֖ה pasture; mirʿe לָהֶ֑ם hēm גַּם yea, gam עֶדְרֵ֥י the flocks ʿēder הַצֹּ֖אן of sheep ṣōn נֶאְשָֽׁמוּ׃ are made desolate. ʾāšam

אֵלֶ֥יךָ to ʾēl יְהוָ֖ה O Lord, yĕhōwâ אֶקְרָ֑א thee will I cry: qārāʾ כִּ֣י for kî אֵ֗שׁ the fire ʾēš אָֽכְלָה֙ hath devoured ʾākal נְא֣וֹת the pastures nāʾâ מִדְבָּ֔ר of the wilderness, midbār וְלֶ֣הָבָ֔ה and the flame lehābâ לִהֲטָ֖ה hath burned lāhaṭ כָּל all kōl עֲצֵ֥י the trees ʿēṣ הַשָּׂדֶֽה׃ of the field. śāde

גַּם also gam בַּהֲמ֥וֹת The beasts bĕhēmâ שָׂדֶ֖ה of the field śāde תַּעֲר֣וֹג cry ʿārag אֵלֶ֑יךָ unto ʾēl כִּ֤י thee: for kî יָֽבְשׁוּ֙ are dried up, yābēš אֲפִ֣יקֵי the rivers ʾāpîq מָ֔יִם of waters mayim וְאֵ֕שׁ and the fire ʾēš אָכְלָ֖ה hath devoured ʾākal נְא֥וֹת the pastures nāʾâ הַמִּדְבָּֽר׃ of the wilderness. midbār
