  1. וַיְהִ֣י Again there was hāyâ הַיּ֔וֹם a day yôm וַיָּבֹ֙אוּ֙ came bôʾ בְּנֵ֣י when the sons bēn הָֽאֱלֹהִ֔ים of God ʾĕlōhîm לְהִתְיַצֵּ֖ב to present themselves yāṣab עַל before ʿal יְהוָ֑ה the Lord, yĕhōwâ וַיָּב֤וֹא came bôʾ גַֽם also gam הַשָּׂטָן֙ and Satan śāṭān בְּתֹכָ֔ם among tāwek לְהִתְיַצֵּ֖ב them to present himself yāṣab עַל before ʿal יְהוָֽה׃ the Lord. yĕhōwâ
  2. וַיֹּ֤אמֶר said ʾāmar יְהוָה֙ And the Lord yĕhōwâ אֶל unto ʾēl הַשָּׂטָ֔ן Satan, śāṭān אֵ֥י From whence ʾay מִזֶּ֖ה ze תָּבֹ֑א comest bôʾ וַיַּ֨עַן answered ʿānâ הַשָּׂטָ֤ן thou? And Satan śāṭān אֶת ʾēt יְהוָה֙ the Lord, yĕhōwâ וַיֹּאמַ֔ר and said, ʾāmar מִשֻּׁ֣ט From going to and fro šûṭ בָּאָ֔רֶץ in the earth, ʾereṣ וּמֵֽהִתְהַלֵּ֖ךְ and from walking up and down in it. hālak בָּֽהּ׃
  3. וַיֹּ֨אמֶר said ʾāmar יְהוָ֜ה And the Lord yĕhōwâ אֶל unto ʾēl הַשָּׂטָ֗ן Satan, śāṭān הֲשַׂ֣מְתָּ Hast thou śûm לִבְּךָ֮ considered lēb אֶל ʾēl עַבְדִּ֣י my servant ʿebed אִיּוֹב֒ Job, ʾiyyôb כִּי֩ that אֵ֨ין none ʾayin כָּמֹ֜הוּ like him kĕmô בָּאָ֗רֶץ in the earth, ʾereṣ אִ֣ישׁ man, ʾîš תָּ֧ם a perfect tām וְיָשָׁ֛ר and an upright yāšār יְרֵ֥א one that feareth yārēʾ אֱלֹהִ֖ים God, ʾĕlōhîm וְסָ֣ר and escheweth sûr מֵרָ֑ע evil? raʿ וְעֹדֶ֙נּוּ֙ and still ʿôd מַֽחֲזִ֣יק he holdeth fast ḥāzaq בְּתֻמָּת֔וֹ his integrity, tummâ וַתְּסִיתֵ֥נִי although thou movedst sût ב֖וֹ לְבַלְּע֥וֹ me against him, to destroy bālaʿ חִנָּֽם׃ him without cause. ḥinnām
  4. וַיַּ֧עַן answered ʿānâ הַשָּׂטָ֛ן And Satan śāṭān אֶת ʾēt יְהוָ֖ה the Lord, yĕhōwâ וַיֹּאמַ֑ר and said, ʾāmar ע֣וֹר Skin ʿôr בְּעַד bĕʿad ע֗וֹר for skin, ʿôr וְכֹל֙ yea, all kōl אֲשֶׁ֣ר that ʾăšer לָאִ֔ישׁ a man ʾîš יִתֵּ֖ן hath will he give nātan בְּעַ֥ד for bĕʿad נַפְשֽׁוֹ׃ his life. nepeš
  5. אוּלָם֙ But ʾûlām שְֽׁלַֽח put forth šālaḥ נָ֣א now, nāʾ יָֽדְךָ֔ thine hand yād וְגַ֥ע and touch nāgaʿ אֶל ʾēl עַצְמ֖וֹ his bone ʿeṣem וְאֶל thee to ʾēl בְּשָׂר֑וֹ and his flesh, bāśār אִם and ʾim לֹ֥א lōʾ אֶל ʾēl פָּנֶ֖יךָ thy face. pānîm יְבָרֲכֶֽךָּ׃ he will curse bārak
  6. וַיֹּ֧אמֶר said ʾāmar יְהוָ֛ה And the Lord yĕhōwâ אֶל unto ʾēl הַשָּׂטָ֖ן Satan, śāṭān הִנּ֣וֹ Behold, hēn בְיָדֶ֑ךָ he in thine hand; yād אַ֖ךְ but ʾak אֶת ʾēt נַפְשׁ֥וֹ his life. nepeš שְׁמֹֽר׃ save šāmar
  7. וַיֵּצֵא֙ So went yāṣāʾ הַשָּׂטָ֔ן Satan śāṭān מֵאֵ֖ת forth from ʾēt פְּנֵ֣י the presence pānîm יְהוָ֑ה of the Lord, yĕhōwâ וַיַּ֤ךְ and smote nākâ אֶת ʾēt אִיּוֹב֙ Job ʾiyyôb בִּשְׁחִ֣ין boils šĕḥîn רָ֔ע with sore raʿ מִכַּ֥ף from the sole kap רַגְל֖וֹ of his foot regel עַ֥ד unto ʿad קָדְקֳדֽוֹ׃ his crown. qodqōd
  8. וַיִּֽקַּֽח And he took lāqaḥ ל֣וֹ חֶ֔רֶשׂ him a potsherd ḥereś לְהִתְגָּרֵ֖ד to scrape himself gārad בּ֑וֹ וְה֖וּא withal; and he hûʾ יֹשֵׁ֥ב sat down yāšab בְּתוֹךְ among tāwek הָאֵֽפֶר׃ the ashes. ʾēper
  9. וַתֹּ֤אמֶר Then said ʾāmar לוֹ֙ אִשְׁתּ֔וֹ his wife ʾiššâ עֹֽדְךָ֖ unto him, Dost thou still ʿôd מַֽחֲזִ֣יק retain ḥāzaq בְּתֻמָּתֶ֑ךָ thine integrity? tummâ בָּרֵ֥ךְ curse bārak אֱלֹהִ֖ים God, ʾĕlōhîm וָמֻֽת׃ and die. mût
  10. וַיֹּ֣אמֶר But he said ʾāmar אֵלֶ֗יהָ unto ʾēl כְּדַבֵּ֞ר her, Thou speakest dābar אַחַ֤ת as one ʾeḥād הַנְּבָלוֹת֙ of the foolish women nābāl תְּדַבֵּ֔רִי speaketh. dābar גַּ֣ם What? gam אֶת ʾēt הַטּ֗וֹב good ṭôb נְקַבֵּל֙ shall we receive qābal מֵאֵ֣ת at the hand ʾēt הָֽאֱלֹהִ֔ים of God, ʾĕlōhîm וְאֶת ʾēt הָרָ֖ע evil? raʿ לֹ֣א and shall we not lōʾ נְקַבֵּ֑ל receive qābal בְּכָל In all kōl זֹ֛את this zōt לֹֽא did not lōʾ חָטָ֥א sin ḥāṭāʾ אִיּ֖וֹב Job ʾiyyôb בִּשְׂפָתָֽיו׃ with his lips. śāpâ
  11. וַֽיִּשְׁמְע֞וּ heard šāmaʿ שְׁלֹ֣שֶׁת׀ three šālôš רֵעֵ֣י friends rēaʿ אִיּ֗וֹב Now when Job's ʾiyyôb אֵ֣ת ʾēt כָּל of all kōl הָֽרָעָ֣ה evil raʿ הַזֹּאת֮ this zōt הַבָּ֣אָה that was come bôʾ עָלָיו֒ upon ʿal וַיָּבֹ֙אוּ֙ him, they came bôʾ אִ֣ישׁ every one ʾîš מִמְּקֹמ֔וֹ from his own place; māqôm אֱלִיפַ֤ז Eliphaz ʾĕlîpaz הַתֵּֽימָנִי֙ the Temanite, têmānî וּבִלְדַּ֣ד and Bildad bildad הַשּׁוּחִ֔י the Shuhite, šûḥî וְצוֹפַ֖ר and Zophar ṣôpar הַנַּֽעֲמָתִ֑י the Naamathite: naʿămātî וַיִּוָּֽעֲד֣וּ for they had made an appointment yāʿad יַחְדָּ֔ו together yaḥad לָב֥וֹא to come bôʾ לָנֽוּד to mourn nûd ל֖וֹ וּֽלְנַחֲמֽוֹ׃ with him and to comfort him. nāḥam
  12. וַיִּשְׂא֨וּ And when they lifted up nāśāʾ אֶת ʾēt עֵֽינֵיהֶ֤ם their eyes ʿayin מֵֽרָחוֹק֙ afar off, rāḥôq וְלֹ֣א him not, lōʾ הִכִּירֻ֔הוּ and knew nākar וַיִּשְׂא֥וּ they lifted up nāśāʾ קוֹלָ֖ם their voice, qôl וַיִּבְכּ֑וּ and wept; bākâ וַֽיִּקְרְעוּ֙ and they rent qāraʿ אִ֣ישׁ every one ʾîš מְעִל֔וֹ his mantle, mĕʿîl וַיִּזְרְק֥וּ and sprinkled zāraq עָפָ֛ר dust ʿāpār עַל upon ʿal רָֽאשֵׁיהֶ֖ם their heads rōš הַשָּׁמָֽיְמָה׃ toward heaven. šāmayim
  13. וַיֵּֽשְׁב֤וּ So they sat down yāšab אִתּוֹ֙ with ʾēt לָאָ֔רֶץ him upon the ground ʾereṣ שִׁבְעַ֥ת seven šebaʿ יָמִ֖ים days yôm וְשִׁבְעַ֣ת and seven šebaʿ לֵיל֑וֹת nights, layil וְאֵין and none ʾayin דֹּבֵ֤ר spake dābar אֵלָיו֙ unto ʾēl דָּבָ֔ר a word dābār כִּ֣י him: for רָא֔וּ they saw rāʾâ כִּֽי that גָדַ֥ל great. gādal הַכְּאֵ֖ב grief kĕʾēb מְאֹֽד׃ was very mĕʾōd
