וַיְהִ֥י came hāyâ דְבַר The word dābār יְהוָ֖ה of the Lord yĕhōwâ אֵלַ֥י unto ʾēl לֵאמֹֽר׃ me again, saying, ʾāmar

מַה What mâ לָּכֶ֗ם אַתֶּם֙ mean ye, that ye ʾattâ מֹֽשְׁלִים֙ use māšal אֶת ʾēt הַמָּשָׁ֣ל proverb māšāl הַזֶּ֔ה this ze עַל concerning ʿal אַדְמַ֥ת the land ʾădāmâ יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל of Israel, yiśrāʾēl לֵאמֹ֑ר saying, ʾāmar אָבוֹת֙ The fathers ʾāb יֹ֣אכְלוּ have eaten ʾākal בֹ֔סֶר sour grapes, bōser וְשִׁנֵּ֥י teeth šēn הַבָּנִ֖ים and the children's bēn תִּקְהֶֽינָה׃ are set on edge? qāhâ

חַי live, ḥay אָ֕נִי I ʾănî נְאֻ֖ם saith nĕʾum אֲדֹנָ֣י the Lord ʾădōnāy יְהוִ֑ה God, yĕhōwi אִם ye shall not ʾim יִֽהְיֶ֨ה have hāyâ לָכֶ֜ם ע֗וֹד any more ʿôd מְשֹׁ֛ל to use māšal הַמָּשָׁ֥ל proverb māšāl הַזֶּ֖ה this ze בְּיִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ in Israel. yiśrāʾēl

הֵ֤ן Behold, hēn כָּל all kōl הַנְּפָשׁוֹת֙ souls nepeš לִ֣י הֵ֔נָּה hēnnâ כְּנֶ֧פֶשׁ are mine; as the soul nepeš הָאָ֛ב of the father, ʾāb וּכְנֶ֥פֶשׁ so also the soul nepeš הַבֵּ֖ן of the son bēn לִי הֵ֑נָּה hēnnâ הַנֶּ֥פֶשׁ is mine: the soul nepeš הַחֹטֵ֖את that sinneth, ḥāṭāʾ הִ֥יא it hûʾ תָמֽוּת׃ shall die. mût

וְאִ֖ישׁ a man ʾîš כִּי But if kî יִהְיֶ֣ה be hāyâ צַדִּ֑יק just, ṣaddîq וְעָשָׂ֥ה and do ʿāśâ מִשְׁפָּ֖ט that which is lawful mišpāṭ וּצְדָקָֽה׃ and right, ṣĕdāqâ

אֶל upon ʾēl הֶֽהָרִים֙ the mountains, har לֹ֣א hath not lōʾ אָכָ֔ל eaten ʾākal וְעֵינָיו֙ his eyes ʿayin לֹ֣א neither lōʾ נָשָׂ֔א hath lifted up nāśāʾ אֶל to ʾēl גִּלּוּלֵ֖י the idols gillûl בֵּ֣ית of the house bayit יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל of Israel, yiśrāʾēl וְאֶת ʾēt אֵ֤שֶׁת wife, ʾiššâ רֵעֵ֙הוּ֙ his neighbour's rēaʿ לֹ֣א neither lōʾ טִמֵּ֔א hath defiled ṭāmēʾ וְאֶל to ʾēl אִשָּׁ֥ה woman, ʾiššâ נִדָּ֖ה a menstruous niddâ לֹ֥א neither lōʾ יִקְרָֽב׃ hath come near qārab

וְאִישׁ֙ any, ʾîš לֹ֣א And hath not lōʾ יוֹנֶ֔ה oppressed yānâ חֲבֹלָת֥וֹ his pledge, ḥăbōl חוֹב֙ to the debtor ḥôb יָשִׁ֔יב hath restored šûb גְּזֵלָ֖ה by violence, gĕzēlâ לֹ֣א none lōʾ יִגְזֹ֑ל hath spoiled gāzal לַחְמוֹ֙ his bread leḥem לְרָעֵ֣ב to the hungry, rāʿēb יִתֵּ֔ן hath given nātan וְעֵירֹ֖ם the naked ʿêrōm יְכַסֶּה and hath covered kāsâ בָּֽגֶד׃ with a garment; beged

בַּנֶּ֣שֶׁךְ upon usury, nešek לֹֽא He hath not lōʾ יִתֵּ֗ן given forth nātan וְתַרְבִּית֙ any increase, tarbît לֹ֣א neither lōʾ יִקָּ֔ח hath taken lāqaḥ מֵעָ֖וֶל from iniquity, ʿewel יָשִׁ֣יב hath withdrawn šûb יָד֑וֹ his hand yād מִשְׁפַּ֤ט judgment mišpāṭ אֱמֶת֙ true ʾemet יַֽעֲשֶׂ֔ה hath executed ʿāśâ בֵּ֥ין between bên אִ֖ישׁ man ʾîš לְאִֽישׁ׃ and man, ʾîš

בְּחֻקּוֹתַ֧י in my statutes, ḥuqqâ יְהַלֵּ֛ךְ Hath walked hālak וּמִשְׁפָּטַ֥י my judgments, mišpāṭ שָׁמַ֖ר and hath kept šāmar לַעֲשׂ֣וֹת to deal ʿāśâ אֱמֶ֑ת truly; ʾemet צַדִּ֥יק just, ṣaddîq הוּא֙ he hûʾ חָיֹ֣ה he shall surely ḥāyâ יִֽחְיֶ֔ה live, ḥāyâ נְאֻ֖ם saith nĕʾum אֲדֹנָ֥י the Lord ʾădōnāy יְהוִֽה׃ God. yĕhōwi

וְהוֹלִ֥יד If he beget yālad בֵּן a son bēn פָּרִ֖יץ a robber, pĕrîṣ שֹׁפֵ֣ךְ a shedder šāpak דָּ֑ם of blood, dām וְעָ֣שָׂה and doeth ʿāśâ אָ֔ח the like ʾāḥ מֵאַחַ֖ד to one ʾeḥād מֵאֵֽלֶּה׃ of these ʾēlle

וְה֕וּא And that hûʾ אֶת ʾēt כָּל any kōl אֵ֖לֶּה of those ʾēlle לֹ֣א not lōʾ עָשָׂ֑ה doeth ʿāśâ כִּ֣י but kî גַ֤ם even gam אֶל upon ʾēl הֶֽהָרִים֙ the mountains, har אָכַ֔ל hath eaten ʾākal וְאֶת ʾēt אֵ֥שֶׁת wife, ʾiššâ רֵעֵ֖הוּ his neighbour's rēaʿ טִמֵּֽא׃ and defiled ṭāmēʾ

עָנִ֤י the poor ʿānî וְאֶבְיוֹן֙ and needy, ʾebyôn הוֹנָ֔ה Hath oppressed yānâ גְּזֵל֣וֹת by violence, gĕzēlâ גָּזָ֔ל hath spoiled gāzal חֲבֹ֖ל the pledge, ḥăbōl לֹ֣א hath not lōʾ יָשִׁ֑יב restored šûb וְאֶל to ʾēl הַגִּלּוּלִים֙ the idols, gillûl נָשָׂ֣א and hath lifted up nāśāʾ עֵינָ֔יו his eyes ʿayin תּוֹעֵבָ֖ה abomination, tôʿēba עָשָֽׂה׃ hath committed ʿāśâ

בַּנֶּ֧שֶׁךְ upon usury, nešek נָתַ֛ן Hath given forth nātan וְתַרְבִּ֥ית increase: tarbît לָקַ֖ח and hath taken lāqaḥ וָחָ֑י shall he then live? ḥāyay לֹ֣א he shall not lōʾ יִֽחְיֶ֗ה live: ḥāyâ אֵ֣ת ʾēt כָּל all kōl הַתּוֹעֵב֤וֹת abominations; tôʿēba הָאֵ֙לֶּה֙ these ʾēlle עָשָׂ֔ה he hath done ʿāśâ מ֣וֹת he shall surely mût יוּמָ֔ת die; mût דָּמָ֖יו his blood dām בּ֥וֹ יִהְיֶֽה׃ shall be upon him. hāyâ

וְהִנֵּה֙ Now, lo, hinnē הוֹלִ֣יד he beget yālad בֵּ֔ן a son, bēn וַיַּ֕רְא that seeth rāʾâ אֶת ʾēt כָּל all kōl חַטֹּ֥את sins ḥaṭṭāʾâ אָבִ֖יו his father's ʾāb אֲשֶׁ֣ר which ʾăšer עָשָׂ֑ה he hath done, ʿāśâ וַיִּרְאֶ֕ה and considereth, rāʾâ וְלֹ֥א not lōʾ יַעֲשֶׂ֖ה and doeth ʿāśâ כָּהֵֽן׃ such like, hēn

עַל upon ʿal הֶֽהָרִים֙ the mountains, har לֹ֣א hath not lōʾ אָכָ֔ל eaten ʾākal וְעֵינָיו֙ his eyes ʿayin לֹ֣א neither lōʾ נָשָׂ֔א hath lifted up nāśāʾ אֶל to ʾēl גִּלּוּלֵ֖י the idols gillûl בֵּ֣ית of the house bayit יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל of Israel, yiśrāʾēl אֶת ʾēt אֵ֥שֶׁת wife, ʾiššâ רֵעֵ֖הוּ his neighbour's rēaʿ לֹ֥א hath not lōʾ טִמֵּֽא׃ defiled ṭāmēʾ

וְאִישׁ֙ any, ʾîš לֹ֣א Neither lōʾ הוֹנָ֔ה hath oppressed yānâ חֲבֹל֙ the pledge, ḥăbōl לֹ֣א hath not lōʾ חָבָ֔ל withholden ḥābal וּגְזֵלָ֖ה by violence, gĕzēlâ לֹ֣א neither lōʾ גָזָ֑ל hath spoiled gāzal לַחְמוֹ֙ his bread leḥem לְרָעֵ֣ב to the hungry, rāʿēb נָתָ֔ן hath given nātan וְעֵר֖וֹם the naked ʿêrōm כִּסָּה and hath covered kāsâ בָֽגֶד׃ with a garment, beged

אָבִ֞יו his father, ʾāb כִּֽי because kî עָ֣שַׁק oppressed, ʿāšaq עֹ֗שֶׁק he cruelly ʿōšeq גָּזַל֙ spoiled gāzal גֵּ֣זֶל by violence, gēzel אָ֔ח his brother ʾāḥ וַאֲשֶׁ֥ר which ʾăšer לֹא not lōʾ ט֛וֹב good ṭôb עָשָׂ֖ה and did ʿāśâ בְּת֣וֹךְ among tāwek עַמָּ֑יו his people, ʿam וְהִנֵּה lo, hinnē מֵ֖ת even he shall die mût בַּעֲוֺנֽוֹ׃ in his iniquity. ʿāwōn

וַאֲמַרְתֶּ֕ם Yet say ʾāmar מַדֻּ֛עַ ye, Why? maddûaʿ לֹא doth not lōʾ נָשָׂ֥א bear nāśāʾ הַבֵּ֖ן the son bēn בַּעֲוֺ֣ן the iniquity ʿāwōn הָאָ֑ב of the father? ʾāb וְהַבֵּ֞ן When the son bēn מִשְׁפָּ֧ט that which is lawful mišpāṭ וּצְדָקָ֣ה and right, ṣĕdāqâ עָשָׂ֗ה hath done ʿāśâ אֵ֣ת ʾēt כָּל all kōl חֻקּוֹתַ֥י my statutes, ḥuqqâ שָׁמַ֛ר hath kept šāmar וַיַּעֲשֶׂ֥ה and hath done ʿāśâ אֹתָ֖ם ʾēt חָיֹ֥ה them, he shall surely ḥāyâ יִחְיֶֽה׃ live. ḥāyâ

הַנֶּ֥פֶשׁ The soul nepeš הַחֹטֵ֖את that sinneth, ḥāṭāʾ הִ֣יא it hûʾ תָמ֑וּת shall die. mût בֵּ֞ן The son bēn לֹא shall not lōʾ יִשָּׂ֣א׀ bear nāśāʾ בַּעֲוֺ֣ן the iniquity ʿāwōn הָאָ֗ב of the father, ʾāb וְאָב֙ shall the father ʾāb לֹ֤א neither lōʾ יִשָּׂא֙ bear nāśāʾ בַּעֲוֺ֣ן the iniquity ʿāwōn הַבֵּ֔ן of the son: bēn צִדְקַ֤ת the righteousness ṣĕdāqâ הַצַּדִּיק֙ of the righteous ṣaddîq עָלָ֣יו upon ʿal תִּֽהְיֶ֔ה shall be hāyâ וְרִשְׁעַ֥ת him, and the wickedness rišʿâ רָשָׁ֖ע of the wicked rāšāʿ עָלָ֥יו upon him. ʿal תִּֽהְיֶֽה׃ shall be hāyâ

וְהָרָשָׁ֗ע the wicked rāšāʿ כִּ֤י But if kî יָשׁוּב֙ will turn šûb מִכָּל from all kōl חַטֹּאתָו֙ his sins ḥaṭṭāʾâ אֲשֶׁ֣ר that ʾăšer עָשָׂ֔ה he hath committed, ʿāśâ וְשָׁמַר֙ and keep šāmar אֶת ʾēt כָּל all kōl חֻקוֹתַ֔י my statutes, ḥuqqâ וְעָשָׂ֥ה and do ʿāśâ מִשְׁפָּ֖ט that which is lawful mišpāṭ וּצְדָקָ֑ה and right, ṣĕdāqâ חָיֹ֥ה he shall surely ḥāyâ יִחְיֶ֖ה live, ḥāyâ לֹ֥א he shall not lōʾ יָמֽוּת׃ die. mût

כָּל All kōl פְּשָׁעָיו֙ his transgressions pešaʿ אֲשֶׁ֣ר that ʾăšer עָשָׂ֔ה he hath committed, ʿāśâ לֹ֥א they shall not lōʾ יִזָּכְר֖וּ be mentioned zākar ל֑וֹ בְּצִדְקָת֥וֹ unto him: in his righteousness ṣĕdāqâ אֲשֶׁר that ʾăšer עָשָׂ֖ה he hath done ʿāśâ יִֽחְיֶֽה׃ he shall live. ḥāyâ

הֶחָפֹ֤ץ Have I any pleasure ḥāpēṣ אֶחְפֹּץ֙ at all ḥāpēṣ מ֣וֹת should die? māwet רָשָׁ֔ע that the wicked rāšāʿ נְאֻ֖ם saith nĕʾum אֲדֹנָ֣י the Lord ʾădōnāy יְהוִ֑ה God: yĕhōwi הֲל֛וֹא not lōʾ בְּשׁוּב֥וֹ that he should return šûb מִדְּרָכָ֖יו from his ways, derek וְחָיָֽה׃ and live? ḥāyâ

וּבְשׁ֨וּב turneth away šûb צַדִּ֤יק But when the righteous ṣaddîq מִצִּדְקָתוֹ֙ from his righteousness, ṣĕdāqâ וְעָ֣שָׂה and committeth ʿāśâ עָ֔וֶל iniquity, ʿewel כְּכֹ֨ל according to all kōl הַתּוֹעֵב֜וֹת the abominations tôʿēba אֲשֶׁר that ʾăšer עָשָׂ֧ה doeth ʿāśâ הָרָשָׁ֛ע the wicked rāšāʿ יַעֲשֶׂ֖ה doeth, ʿāśâ וָחָ֑י shall he live? ḥāyay כָּל All kōl צִדְקֹתָ֤ו his righteousness ṣĕdāqâ אֲשֶׁר that ʾăšer עָשָׂה֙ he hath done ʿāśâ לֹ֣א shall not lōʾ תִזָּכַ֔רְנָה be mentioned: zākar בְּמַעֲל֧וֹ in his trespass māʿal אֲשֶׁר that ʾăšer מָעַ֛ל he hath trespassed, maʿal וּבְחַטָּאת֥וֹ and in his sin ḥaṭṭāʾâ אֲשֶׁר that ʾăšer חָטָ֖א he hath sinned, ḥāṭāʾ בָּ֥ם יָמֽוּת׃ in them shall he die. mût

וַאֲמַרְתֶּ֕ם Yet ye say, ʾāmar לֹ֥א lōʾ יִתָּכֵ֖ן is not equal. tākan דֶּ֣רֶךְ The way derek אֲדֹנָ֑י of the Lord ʾădōnāy שִׁמְעוּ Hear šāmaʿ נָא֙ now, nāʾ בֵּ֣ית O house bayit יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל of Israel; yiśrāʾēl הֲדַרְכִּי֙ my way derek לֹ֣א Is not lōʾ יִתָּכֵ֔ן equal? tākan הֲלֹ֥א are not lōʾ דַרְכֵיכֶ֖ם your ways derek לֹ֥א lōʾ יִתָּכֵֽנוּ׃ unequal? tākan

בְּשׁוּב turneth away šûb צַדִּ֧יק When a righteous ṣaddîq מִצִּדְקָת֛וֹ from his righteousness, ṣĕdāqâ וְעָ֥שָׂה and committeth ʿāśâ עָ֖וֶל iniquity, ʿewel וּמֵ֣ת and dieth mût עֲלֵיהֶ֑ם in ʿal בְּעַוְל֥וֹ them; for his iniquity ʿewel אֲשֶׁר that ʾăšer עָשָׂ֖ה he hath done ʿāśâ יָמֽוּת׃ shall he die. mût

וּבְשׁ֣וּב turneth away šûb רָשָׁ֗ע Again, when the wicked rāšāʿ מֵֽרִשְׁעָתוֹ֙ from his wickedness rišʿâ אֲשֶׁ֣ר that ʾăšer עָשָׂ֔ה he hath committed, ʿāśâ וַיַּ֥עַשׂ and doeth ʿāśâ מִשְׁפָּ֖ט that which is lawful mišpāṭ וּצְדָקָ֑ה and right, ṣĕdāqâ ה֖וּא he hûʾ אֶת ʾēt נַפְשׁ֥וֹ his soul alive. nepeš יְחַיֶּֽה׃ shall save ḥāyâ

וַיִּרְאֶ֣ה Because he considereth, rāʾâ וַיָּ֔שָׁוב and turneth away šûb מִכָּל from all kōl פְּשָׁעָ֖יו his transgressions pešaʿ אֲשֶׁ֣ר that ʾăšer עָשָׂ֑ה he hath committed, ʿāśâ חָי֥וֹ he shall surely ḥāyâ יִחְיֶ֖ה live, ḥāyâ לֹ֥א he shall not lōʾ יָמֽוּת׃ die. mût

וְאָֽמְרוּ֙ Yet saith ʾāmar בֵּ֣ית the house bayit יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל of Israel, yiśrāʾēl לֹ֥א lōʾ יִתָּכֵ֖ן is not equal. tākan דֶּ֣רֶךְ The way derek אֲדֹנָ֑י of the Lord ʾădōnāy הַדְּרָכַ֞י my ways derek לֹ֤א are not lōʾ יִתָּֽכְנּוּ֙ equal? tākan בֵּ֣ית O house bayit יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל of Israel, yiśrāʾēl הֲלֹ֥א are not lōʾ דַרְכֵיכֶ֖ם your ways derek לֹ֥א lōʾ יִתָּכֵֽן׃ unequal? tākan

לָכֵן֩ Therefore kēn אִ֨ישׁ every one ʾîš כִּדְרָכָ֜יו according to his ways, derek אֶשְׁפֹּ֤ט I will judge šāpaṭ אֶתְכֶם֙ ʾēt בֵּ֣ית you, O house bayit יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל of Israel, yiśrāʾēl נְאֻ֖ם saith nĕʾum אֲדֹנָ֣י the Lord ʾădōnāy יְהוִ֑ה God. yĕhōwâ שׁ֤וּבוּ Repent, šûb וְהָשִׁ֙יבוּ֙ and turn šûb מִכָּל from all kōl פִּשְׁעֵיכֶ֔ם your transgressions; pešaʿ וְלֹֽא shall not lōʾ יִהְיֶ֥ה be hāyâ לָכֶ֛ם לְמִכְשׁ֖וֹל your ruin. mikšôl עָוֹֽן׃ so iniquity ʿāwōn

הַשְׁלִ֣יכוּ Cast away šālak מֵעֲלֵיכֶ֗ם from ʿal אֶת you ʾēt כָּל all kōl פִּשְׁעֵיכֶם֙ your transgressions, pešaʿ אֲשֶׁ֣ר whereby ʾăšer פְּשַׁעְתֶּ֣ם ye have transgressed; pāšaʿ בָּ֔ם וַעֲשׂ֥וּ and make ʿāśâ לָכֶ֛ם לֵ֥ב heart lēb חָדָ֖שׁ you a new ḥādoš וְר֣וּחַ spirit: rûaḥ חֲדָשָׁ֑ה and a new ḥādoš וְלָ֥מָּה for why mâ תָמֻ֖תוּ will ye die, mût בֵּ֥ית O house bayit יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ of Israel? yiśrāʾēl

כִּ֣י For kî לֹ֤א lōʾ אֶחְפֹּץ֙ I have no pleasure ḥāpēṣ בְּמ֣וֹת in the death māwet הַמֵּ֔ת of him that dieth, mût נְאֻ֖ם saith nĕʾum אֲדֹנָ֣י the Lord ʾădōnāy יְהוִ֑ה God: yĕhōwi וְהָשִׁ֖יבוּ wherefore turn šûb וִֽחְיֽוּ׃ and live ye. ḥāyâ
