  1. וַיָּבֹ֤א Then came bôʾ דָוִד֙ David dāwid נֹ֔בֶה to Nob nōb אֶל to ʾēl אֲחִימֶ֖לֶךְ Ahimelech ʾăḥîmelek הַכֹּהֵ֑ן the priest: kōhēn וַיֶּֽחֱרַ֨ד was afraid ḥārad אֲחִימֶ֜לֶךְ and Ahimelech ʾăḥîmelek לִקְרַ֣את at the meeting qirʾâ דָּוִ֗ד of David, dāwid וַיֹּ֤אמֶר and said ʾāmar לוֹ֙ מַדּ֤וּעַ unto him, Why maddûaʿ אַתָּה֙ thou ʾattâ לְבַדֶּ֔ךָ alone, bad וְאִ֖ישׁ man ʾîš אֵ֥ין and no ʾayin אִתָּֽךְ׃ with thee? ʾēt
  2. וַיֹּ֨אמֶר said ʾāmar דָּוִ֜ד And David dāwid לַֽאֲחִימֶ֣לֶךְ unto Ahimelech ʾăḥîmelek הַכֹּהֵ֗ן the priest, kōhēn הַמֶּלֶךְ֮ The king melek צִוַּ֣נִי hath commanded ṣāwâ דָבָר֒ me a business, dābār וַיֹּ֣אמֶר and hath said ʾāmar אֵלַ֗י unto ʾēl אִ֣ישׁ man ʾîš אַל me, Let no ʾal יֵ֧דַע know yādaʿ מְא֛וּמָה any thing mĕʾûmâ אֶת of ʾēt הַדָּבָ֛ר the business dābār אֲשֶׁר whereabout ʾăšer אָֽנֹכִ֥י I ʾānōkî שֹׁלֵֽחֲךָ֖ send šālaḥ וַֽאֲשֶׁ֣ר thee, and what ʾăšer צִוִּיתִ֑ךָ I have commanded ṣāwâ וְאֶת ʾēt הַנְּעָרִ֣ים servants naʿar יוֹדַ֔עְתִּי thee: and I have appointed yādaʿ אֶל to ʾēl מְק֥וֹם a place. māqôm פְּלֹנִ֖י such pĕlōnî אַלְמוֹנִֽי׃ and such ʾalmōnî
  3. וְעַתָּ֗ה Now ʿattâ מַה therefore what יֵּ֧שׁ is yēš תַּֽחַת under taḥat יָדְךָ֛ thine hand? yād חֲמִשָּׁה five ḥāmēš לֶ֖חֶם bread leḥem תְּנָ֣ה give nātan בְיָדִ֑י in mine hand, yād א֖וֹ or ʾô הַנִּמְצָֽא׃ what there is present. māṣāʾ
  4. וַיַּ֨עַן answered ʿānâ הַכֹּהֵ֤ן And the priest kōhēn אֶת ʾēt דָּוִד֙ David, dāwid וַיֹּ֔אמֶר and said, ʾāmar אֵֽין no ʾayin לֶ֥חֶם bread leḥem חֹ֖ל common ḥōl אֶל under ʾēl תַּ֣חַת taḥat יָדִ֑י mine hand, yād כִּֽי but אִם ʾim לֶ֤חֶם bread; leḥem קֹ֙דֶשׁ֙ hallowed qōdeš יֵ֔שׁ there is yēš אִם if ʾim נִשְׁמְר֥וּ have kept themselves šāmar הַנְּעָרִ֖ים the young men naʿar אַ֥ךְ at least ʾak מֵֽאִשָּֽׁה׃ from women. ʾiššâ
  5. וַיַּעַן֩ answered ʿānâ דָּוִ֨ד And David dāwid אֶת ʾēt הַכֹּהֵ֜ן the priest, kōhēn וַיֹּ֣אמֶר and said ʾāmar ל֗וֹ כִּ֣י unto him, Of אִם a truth ʾim אִשָּׁ֤ה women ʾiššâ עֲצֻֽרָה kept ʿāṣār לָ֙נוּ֙ כִּתְמ֣וֹל days, tĕmôl שִׁלְשֹׁ֔ם from us about these three šilšôm בְּצֵאתִ֕י since I came out, yāṣāʾ וַיִּֽהְי֥וּ hāyâ כְלֵֽי and the vessels kĕlî הַנְּעָרִ֖ים of the young men naʿar קֹ֑דֶשׁ are holy, qōdeš וְהוּא֙ hûʾ דֶּ֣רֶךְ and in a manner derek חֹ֔ל common, ḥōl וְאַ֕ף yea, ʾap כִּ֥י though הַיּ֖וֹם this day yôm יִקְדַּ֥שׁ it were sanctified qādaš בַּכֶּֽלִי׃ in the vessel. kĕlî
  6. וַיִּתֶּן gave nātan ל֥וֹ הַכֹּהֵ֖ן So the priest kōhēn קֹ֑דֶשׁ him hallowed qōdeš כִּי֩ for לֹא no lōʾ הָ֨יָה there was hāyâ שָׁ֜ם there šām לֶ֗חֶם bread leḥem כִּֽי but אִם ʾim לֶ֤חֶם the shewbread, leḥem הַפָּנִים֙ pānîm הַמּֽוּסָרִים֙ that was taken sûr מִלִּפְנֵ֣י from before pānîm יְהוָ֔ה the Lord, yĕhōwâ לָשׂוּם֙ to put śûm לֶ֣חֶם bread leḥem חֹ֔ם hot ḥōm בְּי֖וֹם in the day yôm הִלָּֽקְחֽוֹ׃ when it was taken away. lāqaḥ
  7. וְשָׁ֡ם there šām אִישׁ֩ Now a certain man ʾîš מֵֽעַבְדֵ֨י of the servants ʿebed שָׁא֜וּל of Saul šāʾûl בַּיּ֣וֹם day, yôm הַה֗וּא that hûʾ נֶעְצָר֙ detained ʿāṣār לִפְנֵ֣י before pānîm יְהוָ֔ה the Lord; yĕhōwâ וּשְׁמ֖וֹ and his name šēm דֹּאֵ֣ג Doeg, dōʾēg הָֽאֲדֹמִ֑י an Edomite, ʾĕdōmî אַבִּ֥יר the chiefest ʾabbîr הָֽרֹעִ֖ים of the herdmen rāʿâ אֲשֶׁ֥ר that ʾăšer לְשָׁאֽוּל׃ to Saul. šāʾûl
  8. וַיֹּ֤אמֶר said ʾāmar דָּוִד֙ And David dāwid לַֽאֲחִימֶ֔לֶךְ unto Ahimelech, ʾăḥîmelek וְאִ֛ין not ʾîn יֶשׁ And is there yēš פֹּ֥ה here תַֽחַת under taḥat יָדְךָ֖ thine hand yād חֲנִ֣ית spear ḥănît אוֹ or ʾô חָ֑רֶב sword? ḥereb כִּ֣י for גַם I have neither gam חַרְבִּ֤י my sword ḥereb וְגַם nor gam כֵּלַי֙ my weapons kĕlî לֹֽא lōʾ לָקַ֣חְתִּי brought lāqaḥ בְיָדִ֔י with me, yād כִּֽי because הָיָ֥ה required hāyâ דְבַר business dābār הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ the king's melek נָחֽוּץ׃ haste. nāḥaṣ
  9. וַיֹּ֣אמֶר said, ʾāmar הַכֹּהֵ֗ן And the priest kōhēn חֶרֶב֩ The sword ḥereb גָּלְיָ֨ת of Goliath golyat הַפְּלִשְׁתִּ֜י the Philistine, pĕlištî אֲשֶׁר whom ʾăšer הִכִּ֣יתָ׀ thou slewest nākâ בְּעֵ֣מֶק in the valley ʿēmeq הָֽאֵלָ֗ה of Elah, ʾēlâ הִנֵּה behold, hinnē הִ֞יא it hûʾ לוּטָ֣ה wrapped lûṭ בַשִּׂמְלָה֮ in a cloth śimlâ אַֽחֲרֵ֣י behind ʾaḥar הָֽאֵפוֹד֒ the ephod: ʾēpôd אִם if ʾim אֹתָ֤הּ ʾēt תִּֽקַּח thou wilt take lāqaḥ לְךָ֙ קָ֔ח that, take lāqaḥ כִּ֣י for אֵ֥ין no ʾayin אַחֶ֛רֶת other ʾaḥēr זֽוּלָתָ֖הּ save zûlâ בָּזֶ֑ה that here. ze וַיֹּ֧אמֶר said, ʾāmar דָּוִ֛ד And David dāwid אֵ֥ין none ʾayin כָּמ֖וֹהָ kĕmô תְּנֶ֥נָּה like that; give it me. nātan לִּֽי׃
  10. וַיָּ֣קָם arose, qûm דָּוִ֔ד And David dāwid וַיִּבְרַ֥ח and fled bāraḥ בַּיּוֹם day yôm הַה֖וּא that hûʾ מִפְּנֵ֣י for fear pānîm שָׁא֑וּל of Saul, šāʾûl וַיָּבֹ֕א and went bôʾ אֶל to ʾēl אָכִ֖ישׁ Achish ʾăkîš מֶ֥לֶךְ the king melek גַּֽת׃ of Gath. gat
  11. וַיֹּ֨אמְר֜וּ said ʾāmar עַבְדֵ֤י And the servants ʿebed אָכִישׁ֙ of Achish ʾăkîš אֵלָ֔יו unto ʾēl הֲלוֹא him, not lōʾ זֶ֥ה this ze דָוִ֖ד David dāwid מֶ֣לֶךְ the king melek הָאָ֑רֶץ of the land? ʾereṣ הֲל֣וֹא did they not lōʾ לָזֶ֗ה one to another of him ze יַֽעֲנ֤וּ sing ʿānâ בַמְּחֹלוֹת֙ in dances, mĕḥōlâ לֵאמֹ֔ר saying, ʾāmar הִכָּ֤ה hath slain nākâ שָׁאוּל֙ Saul šāʾûl בַּֽאֲלָפָ֔ו his thousands, ʾelep וְדָוִ֖ד and David dāwid בְּרִבְבֹתָֽו׃ his ten thousands? rĕbābâ
  12. וַיָּ֧שֶׂם laid up śûm דָּוִ֛ד And David dāwid אֶת ʾēt הַדְּבָרִ֥ים words dābār הָאֵ֖לֶּה these ʾēlle בִּלְבָב֑וֹ in his heart, lēbāb וַיִּרָ֣א afraid yārēʾ מְאֹ֔ד and was sore mĕʾōd מִפְּנֵ֖י of pānîm אָכִ֥ישׁ Achish ʾăkîš מֶֽלֶךְ the king melek גַּֽת׃ of Gath. gat
  13. וַיְשַׁנּ֤וֹ And he changed šānâ אֶת ʾēt טַעְמוֹ֙ his behaviour ṭaʿam בְּעֵ֣ינֵיהֶ֔ם before ʿayin וַיִּתְהֹלֵ֖ל them, and feigned himself mad hālal בְּיָדָ֑ם in their hands, yād וַיְתָו֙ and scrabbled tāwâ עַל on ʿal דַּלְת֣וֹת the doors delet הַשַּׁ֔עַר of the gate, šaʿar וַיּ֥וֹרֶד fall down yārad רִיר֖וֹ and let his spittle rîr אֶל upon ʾēl זְקָנֽוֹ׃ his beard. zāqān
  14. וַיֹּ֥אמֶר Then said ʾāmar אָכִ֖ישׁ Achish ʾăkîš אֶל unto ʾēl עֲבָדָ֑יו his servants, ʿebed הִנֵּ֤ה Lo, hinnē תִרְאוּ֙ ye see rāʾâ אִ֣ישׁ the man ʾîš מִשְׁתַּגֵּ֔עַ is mad: šāgaʿ לָ֛מָּה wherefore תָּבִ֥יאוּ have ye brought bôʾ אֹת֖וֹ ʾēt אֵלָֽי׃ him to me? ʾēl
  15. חֲסַ֤ר need ḥāsēr מְשֻׁגָּעִים֙ of mad men, šāgaʿ אָ֔נִי Have I ʾănî כִּֽי that הֲבֵאתֶ֣ם ye have brought bôʾ אֶת ʾēt זֶ֔ה this ze לְהִשְׁתַּגֵּ֖עַ to play the mad man šāgaʿ עָלָ֑י in my presence? ʿal הֲזֶ֖ה shall this ze יָב֥וֹא come bôʾ אֶל into ʾēl בֵּיתִֽי׃ my house? bayit
