וְהַמֶּ֤לֶךְ Now king melek דָּוִד֙ David dāwid זָקֵ֔ן was old zāqēn בָּ֖א stricken bôʾ בַּיָּמִ֑ים in years; yôm וַיְכַסֻּ֙הוּ֙ and they covered kāsâ בַּבְּגָדִ֔ים him with clothes, beged וְלֹ֥א lōʾ יִחַ֖ם but he gat no heat. yāḥam לֽוֹ׃

וַיֹּ֧אמְרוּ said ʾāmar ל֣וֹ עֲבָדָ֗יו Wherefore his servants ʿebed יְבַקְשׁ֞וּ unto him, Let there be sought bāqaš לַֽאדֹנִ֤י for my lord ʾādôn הַמֶּ֙לֶךְ֙ the king melek נַֽעֲרָ֣ה a young naʿărâ בְתוּלָ֔ה virgin: bĕtûlâ וְעָֽמְדָה֙ and let her stand ʿāmad לִפְנֵ֣י before pānîm הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ the king, melek וּתְהִי hāyâ ל֖וֹ סֹכֶ֑נֶת and let her cherish sākan וְשָֽׁכְבָ֣ה him, and let her lie šākab בְחֵיקֶ֔ךָ in thy bosom, ḥêq וְחַ֖ם may get heat. ḥāmam לַֽאדֹנִ֥י that my lord ʾādôn הַמֶּֽלֶךְ׃ the king melek

וַיְבַקְשׁוּ֙ So they sought bāqaš נַֽעֲרָ֣ה damsel naʿărâ יָפָ֔ה for a fair yāpe בְּכֹ֖ל throughout all kōl גְּב֣וּל the coasts gĕbûl יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל of Israel, yiśrāʾēl וַֽיִּמְצְא֗וּ and found māṣāʾ אֶת ʾēt אֲבִישַׁג֙ Abishag ʾăbîšag הַשּׁ֣וּנַמִּ֔ית a Shunammite, šûnammît וַיָּבִ֥אוּ and brought bôʾ אֹתָ֖הּ ʾēt לַמֶּֽלֶךְ׃ her to the king. melek

וְהַֽנַּעֲרָ֖ה And the damsel naʿărâ יָפָ֣ה fair, yāpe עַד ʿad מְאֹ֑ד very mĕʾōd וַתְּהִ֨י hāyâ לַמֶּ֤לֶךְ the king, melek סֹכֶ֙נֶת֙ and cherished sākan וַתְּשָׁ֣רְתֵ֔הוּ and ministered šārat וְהַמֶּ֖לֶךְ to him: but the king melek לֹ֥א her not. lōʾ יְדָעָֽהּ׃ knew yādaʿ

וַאֲדֹֽנִיָּ֧ה Then Adonijah ʾădōniyyâ בֶן the son bēn חַגִּ֛ית of Haggith ḥaggît מִתְנַשֵּׂ֥א exalted himself, nāśāʾ לֵאמֹ֖ר saying, ʾāmar אֲנִ֣י I ʾănî אֶמְלֹ֑ךְ will be king: mālak וַיַּ֣עַשׂ and he prepared ʿāśâ ל֗וֹ רֶ֚כֶב him chariots rekeb וּפָ֣רָשִׁ֔ים and horsemen, pāroš וַֽחֲמִשִּׁ֥ים and fifty ḥămiššîm אִ֖ישׁ men ʾîš רָצִ֥ים to run rûṣ לְפָנָֽיו׃ before him. pānîm

וְלֹֽא had not lōʾ עֲצָב֨וֹ displeased ʿāṣab אָבִ֤יו And his father ʾāb מִיָּמָיו֙ him at any time yôm לֵאמֹ֔ר in saying, ʾāmar מַדּ֖וּעַ Why maddûaʿ כָּ֣כָה kākâ עָשִׂ֑יתָ hast thou done so? ʿāśâ וְגַם also gam ה֤וּא and he hûʾ טֽוֹב goodly ṭôb תֹּ֙אַר֙ tōʾar מְאֹ֔ד very mĕʾōd וְאֹת֥וֹ ʾēt יָֽלְדָ֖ה and bare yālad אַֽחֲרֵ֥י him after ʾaḥar אַבְשָׁלֽוֹם׃ Absalom. ʾăbîšālôm

וַיִּֽהְי֣וּ hāyâ דְבָרָ֔יו And he conferred dābār עִ֚ם with ʿim יוֹאָ֣ב Joab yôʾāb בֶּן the son bēn צְרוּיָ֔ה of Zeruiah, ṣĕrûyâ וְעִ֖ם and with ʿim אֶבְיָתָ֣ר Abiathar ʾebyātār הַכֹּהֵ֑ן the priest: kōhēn וַֽיַּעְזְר֔וּ helped ʿāzar אַֽחֲרֵ֖י and they following ʾaḥar אֲדֹֽנִיָּֽה׃ Adonijah ʾădōniyyâ

וְצָד֣וֹק But Zadok ṣādôq הַ֠כֹּהֵן the priest, kōhēn וּבְנָיָ֨הוּ and Benaiah bĕnāyâ בֶן the son bēn יְהֽוֹיָדָ֜ע of Jehoiada, yĕhôyādāʿ וְנָתָ֤ן and Nathan nātān הַנָּבִיא֙ the prophet, nābîʾ וְשִׁמְעִ֣י and Shimei, šimʿî וְרֵעִ֔י and Rei, rēʿî וְהַגִּבּוֹרִ֖ים and the mighty men gibbôr אֲשֶׁ֣ר which ʾăšer לְדָוִ֑ד to David, dāwid לֹ֥א not lōʾ הָי֖וּ were hāyâ עִם with ʿim אֲדֹֽנִיָּֽהוּ׃ Adonijah. ʾădōniyyâ

וַיִּזְבַּ֣ח slew zābaḥ אֲדֹֽנִיָּ֗הוּ And Adonijah ʾădōniyyâ צֹ֤אן sheep ṣōn וּבָקָר֙ and oxen bāqār וּמְרִ֔יא and fat cattle mĕrîʾ עִ֚ם by ʿim אֶ֣בֶן the stone ʾeben הַזֹּחֶ֔לֶת of Zoheleth, zōḥelet אֲשֶׁר which ʾăšer אֵ֖צֶל by ʾēṣel עֵ֣ין רֹגֵ֑ל En-rogel, ʿên rōgēl וַיִּקְרָ֗א and called qārāʾ אֶת ʾēt כָּל all kōl אֶחָיו֙ his brethren ʾāḥ בְּנֵ֣י sons, bēn הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ the king's melek וּלְכָל and all kōl אַנְשֵׁ֥י the men ʾîš יְהוּדָ֖ה of Judah yĕhûdâ עַבְדֵ֥י servants: ʿebed הַמֶּֽלֶךְ׃ the king's melek

וְֽאֶת ʾēt נָתָן֩ But Nathan nātān הַנָּבִ֨יא the prophet, nābîʾ וּבְנָיָ֜הוּ and Benaiah, bĕnāyâ וְֽאֶת ʾēt הַגִּבּוֹרִ֛ים and the mighty men, gibbôr וְאֶת ʾēt שְׁלֹמֹ֥ה and Solomon šĕlōmō אָחִ֖יו his brother, ʾāḥ לֹ֥א not. lōʾ קָרָֽא׃ he called qārāʾ

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר spake ʾāmar נָתָ֗ן Wherefore Nathan nātān אֶל unto ʾēl בַּת שֶׁ֤בַע Bath-sheba bat šebaʿ אֵם the mother ʾēm שְׁלֹמֹה֙ of Solomon, šĕlōmō לֵאמֹ֔ר saying, ʾāmar הֲל֣וֹא Hast thou not lōʾ שָׁמַ֔עַתְּ heard šāmaʿ כִּ֥י that kî מָלַ֖ךְ doth reign, mālak אֲדֹֽנִיָּ֣הוּ Adonijah ʾădōniyyâ בֶן the son bēn חַגִּ֑ית of Haggith ḥaggît וַֽאֲדֹנֵ֥ינוּ our lord ʾādôn דָוִ֖ד and David dāwid לֹ֥א not? lōʾ יָדָֽע׃ knoweth yādaʿ

וְעַתָּ֕ה Now ʿattâ לְכִ֛י therefore come, hālak אִֽיעָצֵ֥ךְ give thee counsel, yāʿaṣ נָ֖א let me, I pray thee, nāʾ עֵצָ֑ה ʿēṣâ וּמַלְּטִי֙ that thou mayest save mālaṭ אֶת ʾēt נַפְשֵׁ֔ךְ thine own life, nepeš וְאֶת ʾēt נֶ֥פֶשׁ and the life nepeš בְּנֵ֖ךְ of thy son bēn שְׁלֹמֹֽה׃ Solomon. šĕlōmō

לְכִ֞י Go hālak וּבֹ֣אִי׀ and get thee in bôʾ אֶל unto ʾēl הַמֶּ֣לֶךְ king melek דָּוִ֗ד David, dāwid וְאָמַ֤רְתְּ and say ʾāmar אֵלָיו֙ unto ʾēl הֲלֹֽא him, Didst not lōʾ אַתָּ֞ה thou, ʾattâ אֲדֹנִ֣י my lord, ʾādôn הַמֶּ֗לֶךְ O king, melek נִשְׁבַּ֤עְתָּ swear šābaʿ לַאֲמָֽתְךָ֙ unto thine handmaid, ʾāmâ לֵאמֹ֔ר saying, ʾāmar כִּֽי Assuredly kî שְׁלֹמֹ֤ה Solomon šĕlōmō בְנֵךְ֙ thy son bēn יִמְלֹ֣ךְ shall reign mālak אַֽחֲרַ֔י after ʾaḥar וְה֖וּא me, and he hûʾ יֵשֵׁ֣ב shall sit yāšab עַל upon ʿal כִּסְאִ֑י my throne? kissēʾ וּמַדּ֖וּעַ why maddûaʿ מָלַ֥ךְ reign? mālak אֲדֹֽנִיָּֽהוּ׃ then doth Adonijah ʾădōniyyâ

הִנֵּ֗ה Behold, hinnē עוֹדָ֛ךְ while thou yet ʿôd מְדַבֶּ֥רֶת talkest dābar שָׁ֖ם there šām עִם with ʿim הַמֶּ֑לֶךְ the king, melek וַֽאֲנִי֙ I ʾănî אָב֣וֹא also will come in bôʾ אַֽחֲרַ֔יִךְ after ʾaḥar וּמִלֵּאתִ֖י thee, and confirm mālēʾ אֶת ʾēt דְּבָרָֽיִךְ׃ thy words. dābār

וַתָּבֹ֨א went in bôʾ בַת שֶׁ֤בַע And Bath-sheba bat šebaʿ אֶל unto ʾēl הַמֶּ֙לֶךְ֙ the king melek הַחַ֔דְרָה into the chamber: ḥeder וְהַמֶּ֖לֶךְ and the king melek זָקֵ֣ן old; zāqēn מְאֹ֑ד was very mĕʾōd וַֽאֲבִישַׁג֙ and Abishag ʾăbîšag הַשּׁ֣וּנַמִּ֔ית the Shunammite šûnammît מְשָׁרַ֖ת šārat אֶת ministered unto ʾēt הַמֶּֽלֶךְ׃ the king. melek

וַתִּקֹּ֣ד And bowed, qādad בַּת שֶׁ֔בַע Bath-sheba bat šebaʿ וַתִּשְׁתַּ֖חוּ and did obeisance šāḥâ לַמֶּ֑לֶךְ unto the king. melek וַיֹּ֥אמֶר said, ʾāmar הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ And the king melek מַה What wouldest mâ לָּֽךְ׃ thou?

וַתֹּ֣אמֶר And she said ʾāmar ל֗וֹ אֲדֹנִי֙ unto him, My lord, ʾādôn אַתָּ֨ה thou ʾattâ נִשְׁבַּ֜עְתָּ swarest šābaʿ בַּֽיהוָ֤ה by the Lord yĕhōwâ אֱלֹהֶ֙יךָ֙ thy God ʾĕlōhîm לַֽאֲמָתֶ֔ךָ unto thine handmaid, ʾāmâ כִּֽי Assuredly kî שְׁלֹמֹ֥ה Solomon šĕlōmō בְנֵ֖ךְ thy son bēn יִמְלֹ֣ךְ shall reign mālak אַֽחֲרָ֑י after ʾaḥar וְה֖וּא me, and he hûʾ יֵשֵׁ֥ב shall sit yāšab עַל upon ʿal כִּסְאִֽי׃ my throne. kissēʾ

וְעַתָּ֕ה And now, ʿattâ הִנֵּ֥ה behold, hinnē אֲדֹֽנִיָּ֖ה Adonijah ʾădōniyyâ מָלָ֑ךְ reigneth; mālak וְעַתָּ֛ה and now, ʿattâ אֲדֹנִ֥י my lord ʾādôn הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ the king, melek לֹ֥א not: lōʾ יָדָֽעְתָּ׃ thou knowest yādaʿ

וַ֠יִּזְבַּח And he hath slain zābaḥ שׁ֥וֹר oxen šôr וּֽמְרִיא and fat cattle mĕrîʾ וְצֹאן֮ and sheep ṣōn לָרֹב֒ in abundance, rōb וַיִּקְרָא֙ and hath called qārāʾ לְכָל all kōl בְּנֵ֣י the sons bēn הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ of the king, melek וּלְאֶבְיָתָר֙ and Abiathar ʾebyātār הַכֹּהֵ֔ן the priest, kōhēn וּלְיֹאָ֖ב and Joab yôʾāb שַׂ֣ר the captain śar הַצָּבָ֑א of the host: ṣābāʾ וְלִשְׁלֹמֹ֥ה but Solomon šĕlōmō עַבְדְּךָ֖ thy servant ʿebed לֹ֥א hath he not lōʾ קָרָֽא׃ called. qārāʾ

וְאַתָּה֙ And thou, ʾattâ אֲדֹנִ֣י my lord, ʾādôn הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ O king, melek עֵינֵ֥י the eyes ʿayin כָל of all kōl יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל Israel yiśrāʾēl עָלֶ֑יךָ upon ʿal לְהַגִּ֣יד thee, that thou shouldest tell nāgad לָהֶ֔ם מִ֗י them who mî יֵשֵׁ֛ב shall sit yāšab עַל on ʿal כִּסֵּ֥א the throne kissēʾ אֲדֹנִֽי of my lord ʾādôn הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ the king melek אַֽחֲרָֽיו׃ after him. ʾaḥar

וְהָיָ֕ה Otherwise it shall come to pass, hāyâ כִּשְׁכַ֥ב shall sleep šākab אֲדֹנִֽי when my lord ʾādôn הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ the king melek עִם with ʿim אֲבֹתָ֑יו his fathers, ʾāb וְהָיִ֗יתִי shall be counted hāyâ אֲנִ֛י that I ʾănî וּבְנִ֥י and my son bēn שְׁלֹמֹ֖ה Solomon šĕlōmō חַטָּאִֽים׃ offenders. ḥaṭṭāʾ

וְהִנֵּ֛ה And, lo, hinnē עוֹדֶ֥נָּה while she yet ʿôd מְדַבֶּ֖רֶת talked dābar עִם with ʿim הַמֶּ֑לֶךְ the king, melek וְנָתָ֥ן Nathan nātān הַנָּבִ֖יא the prophet nābîʾ בָּֽא׃ also came in. bôʾ

וַיַּגִּ֤ידוּ And they told nāgad לַמֶּ֙לֶךְ֙ the king, melek לֵאמֹ֔ר saying, ʾāmar הִנֵּ֖ה Behold hinnē נָתָ֣ן Nathan nātān הַנָּבִ֑יא the prophet. nābîʾ וַיָּבֹא֙ And when he was come in bôʾ לִפְנֵ֣י before pānîm הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ the king, melek וַיִּשְׁתַּ֧חוּ he bowed himself šāḥâ לַמֶּ֛לֶךְ before the king melek עַל with ʿal אַפָּ֖יו his face ʾap אָֽרְצָה׃ to the ground. ʾereṣ

וַיֹּאמֶר֮ said, ʾāmar נָתָן֒ And Nathan nātān אֲדֹנִ֣י My lord, ʾādôn הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ O king, melek אַתָּ֣ה hast thou ʾattâ אָמַ֔רְתָּ said, ʾāmar אֲדֹֽנִיָּ֖הוּ Adonijah ʾădōniyyâ יִמְלֹ֣ךְ shall reign mālak אַֽחֲרָ֑י after ʾaḥar וְה֖וּא me, and he hûʾ יֵשֵׁ֥ב shall sit yāšab עַל upon ʿal כִּסְאִֽי׃ my throne? kissēʾ

כִּ֣י׀ For kî יָרַ֣ד he is gone down yārad הַיּ֗וֹם this day, yôm וַ֠יִּזְבַּח and hath slain zābaḥ שׁ֥וֹר oxen šôr וּֽמְרִיא and fat cattle mĕrîʾ וְצֹאן֮ and sheep ṣōn לָרֹב֒ in abundance, rōb וַיִּקְרָא֩ and hath called qārāʾ לְכָל all kōl בְּנֵ֨י sons, bēn הַמֶּ֜לֶךְ the king's melek וּלְשָׂרֵ֤י and the captains śar הַצָּבָא֙ of the host, ṣābāʾ וּלְאֶבְיָתָ֣ר and Abiathar ʾebyātār הַכֹּהֵ֔ן the priest; kōhēn וְהִנָּ֛ם and, behold, hinnē אֹֽכְלִ֥ים they eat ʾākal וְשֹׁתִ֖ים and drink šātâ לְפָנָ֑יו before pānîm וַיֹּ֣אמְר֔וּ him, and say, ʾāmar יְחִ֖י God save ḥāyâ הַמֶּ֥לֶךְ king melek אֲדֹֽנִיָּֽהוּ׃ Adonijah. ʾădōniyyâ

וְלִ֣י אֲנִֽי But me, me ʾănî עַ֠בְדֶּךָ thy servant, ʿebed וּלְצָדֹ֨ק and Zadok ṣādôq הַכֹּהֵ֜ן the priest, kōhēn וְלִבְנָיָ֧הוּ and Benaiah bĕnāyâ בֶן the son bēn יְהֽוֹיָדָ֛ע of Jehoiada, yĕhôyādāʿ וְלִשְׁלֹמֹ֥ה Solomon, šĕlōmō עַבְדְּךָ֖ and thy servant ʿebed לֹ֥א hath he not lōʾ קָרָֽא׃ called. qārāʾ

אִ֗ם ʾim מֵאֵת֙ by ʾēt אֲדֹנִ֣י my lord ʾādôn הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ the king, melek נִֽהְיָ֖ה done hāyâ הַדָּבָ֣ר thing dābār הַזֶּ֑ה Is this ze וְלֹ֤א and thou hast not lōʾ הוֹדַ֙עְתָּ֙ shewed unto yādaʿ אֶֽת ʾēt עַבְדְּיךָ֔ thy servant, ʿebed מִ֗י who mî יֵשֵׁ֛ב should sit yāšab עַל on ʿal כִּסֵּ֥א the throne kissēʾ אֲדֹנִֽי of my lord ʾādôn הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ the king melek אַֽחֲרָֽיו׃ after him? ʾaḥar

וַיַּ֨עַן Then answered ʿānâ הַמֶּ֤לֶךְ king melek דָּוִד֙ David dāwid וַיֹּ֔אמֶר and said, ʾāmar קִרְאוּ Call qārāʾ לִ֖י me לְבַת שָׁ֑בַע Bath-sheba. bat šebaʿ וַתָּבֹא֙ And she came into bôʾ לִפְנֵ֣י presence, pānîm הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ the king's melek וַֽתַּעֲמֹ֖ד and stood ʿāmad לִפְנֵ֥י before pānîm הַמֶּֽלֶךְ׃ the king. melek

וַיִּשָּׁבַ֥ע sware, šābaʿ הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ And the king melek וַיֹּאמַ֑ר and said, ʾāmar חַי liveth, ḥay יְהוָ֕ה the Lord yĕhōwâ אֲשֶׁר that ʾăšer פָּדָ֥ה hath redeemed pādâ אֶת ʾēt נַפְשִׁ֖י my soul nepeš מִכָּל out of all kōl צָרָֽה׃ distress, ṣārâ

כִּ֡י Even kî כַּֽאֲשֶׁר֩ as ʾăšer נִשְׁבַּ֨עְתִּי I sware šābaʿ לָ֜ךְ בַּֽיהוָ֨ה unto thee by the Lord yĕhōwâ אֱלֹהֵ֤י God ʾĕlōhîm יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ of Israel, yiśrāʾēl לֵאמֹ֔ר saying, ʾāmar כִּֽי Assuredly kî שְׁלֹמֹ֤ה Solomon šĕlōmō בְנֵךְ֙ thy son bēn יִמְלֹ֣ךְ shall reign mālak אַֽחֲרַ֔י after ʾaḥar וְה֛וּא me, and he hûʾ יֵשֵׁ֥ב shall sit yāšab עַל upon ʿal כִּסְאִ֖י my throne kissēʾ תַּחְתָּ֑י in my stead; taḥat כִּ֛י kî כֵּ֥ן even kēn אֶֽעֱשֶׂ֖ה so ʿāśâ הַיּ֥וֹם will I certainly do yôm הַזֶּֽה׃ this day. ze

וַתִּקֹּ֨ד Then bowed qādad בַּת שֶׁ֤בַע Bath-sheba bat šebaʿ אַפַּ֙יִם֙ with face ʾap אֶ֔רֶץ to the earth, ʾereṣ וַתִּשְׁתַּ֖חוּ and did reverence šāḥâ לַמֶּ֑לֶךְ to the king, melek וַתֹּ֕אמֶר and said, ʾāmar יְחִ֗י live ḥāyâ אֲדֹנִ֛י Let my lord ʾādôn הַמֶּ֥לֶךְ king melek דָּוִ֖ד David dāwid לְעֹלָֽם׃ for ever. ʿôlām

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר׀ said, ʾāmar הַמֶּ֣לֶךְ And king melek דָּוִ֗ד David dāwid קִרְאוּ Call qārāʾ לִ֞י לְצָד֤וֹק me Zadok ṣādôq הַכֹּהֵן֙ the priest, kōhēn וּלְנָתָ֣ן and Nathan nātān הַנָּבִ֔יא the prophet, nābîʾ וְלִבְנָיָ֖הוּ and Benaiah bĕnāyâ בֶּן the son bēn יְהֽוֹיָדָ֑ע of Jehoiada. yĕhôyādāʿ וַיָּבֹ֖אוּ And they came bôʾ לִפְנֵ֥י before pānîm הַמֶּֽלֶךְ׃ the king. melek

וַיֹּ֨אמֶר also said ʾāmar הַמֶּ֜לֶךְ The king melek לָהֶ֗ם קְח֤וּ unto them, Take lāqaḥ עִמָּכֶם֙ with ʿim אֶת you ʾēt עַבְדֵ֣י the servants ʿebed אֲדֹֽנֵיכֶ֔ם of your lord, ʾādôn וְהִרְכַּבְתֶּם֙ to ride rākab אֶת and cause ʾēt שְׁלֹמֹ֣ה Solomon šĕlōmō בְנִ֔י my son bēn עַל upon ʿal הַפִּרְדָּ֖ה mine own mule, pirdâ אֲשֶׁר ʾăšer לִ֑י וְהֽוֹרַדְתֶּ֥ם and bring him down yārad אֹת֖וֹ ʾēt אֶל to ʾēl גִּחֽוֹן׃ Gihon: gîḥôn

וּמָשַׁ֣ח anoint māšaḥ אֹת֣וֹ ʾēt שָׁ֠ם him there šām צָד֨וֹק And let Zadok ṣādôq הַכֹּהֵ֜ן the priest kōhēn וְנָתָ֧ן and Nathan nātān הַנָּבִ֛יא the prophet nābîʾ לְמֶ֖לֶךְ king melek עַל over ʿal יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל Israel: yiśrāʾēl וּתְקַעְתֶּם֙ and blow tāqaʿ בַּשּׁוֹפָ֔ר ye with the trumpet, šôpār וַֽאֲמַרְתֶּ֕ם and say, ʾāmar יְחִ֖י God save ḥāyâ הַמֶּ֥לֶךְ king melek שְׁלֹמֹֽה׃ Solomon. šĕlōmō

וַֽעֲלִיתֶ֣ם Then ye shall come up ʿālâ אַֽחֲרָ֗יו after ʾaḥar וּבָא֙ him, that he may come bôʾ וְיָשַׁ֣ב and sit yāšab עַל upon ʿal כִּסְאִ֔י my throne; kissēʾ וְה֥וּא for he hûʾ יִמְלֹ֖ךְ shall be king mālak תַּחְתָּ֑י in my stead: taḥat וְאֹת֤וֹ ʾēt צִוִּ֙יתִי֙ and I have appointed ṣāwâ לִֽהְי֣וֹת him to be hāyâ נָגִ֔יד ruler nāgîd עַל over ʿal יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל Israel yiśrāʾēl וְעַל and over ʿal יְהוּדָֽה׃ Judah. yĕhûdâ

וַיַּ֨עַן answered ʿānâ בְּנָיָ֧הוּ And Benaiah bĕnāyâ בֶן the son bēn יְהֽוֹיָדָ֛ע of Jehoiada yĕhôyādāʿ אֶת ʾēt הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ the king, melek וַיֹּ֣אמֶר׀ and said, ʾāmar אָמֵ֑ן Amen: ʾāmēn כֵּ֚ן so kēn יֹאמַ֣ר say ʾāmar יְהוָ֔ה the Lord yĕhōwâ אֱלֹהֵ֖י God ʾĕlōhîm אֲדֹנִ֥י of my lord ʾādôn הַמֶּֽלֶךְ׃ the king melek

כַּֽאֲשֶׁ֨ר As ʾăšer הָיָ֤ה hath been hāyâ יְהוָה֙ the Lord yĕhōwâ עִם with ʿim אֲדֹנִ֣י my lord ʾādôn הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ the king, melek כֵּ֖ן even so kēn יִֽהְיֶ֣ be hāyâ עִם he with ʿim שְׁלֹמֹ֑ה Solomon, šĕlōmō וִֽיגַדֵּל֙ greater gādal אֶת ʾēt כִּסְא֔וֹ and make his throne kissēʾ מִ֨כִּסֵּ֔א than the throne kissēʾ אֲדֹנִ֖י of my lord ʾādôn הַמֶּ֥לֶךְ king melek דָּוִֽד׃ David. dāwid

וַיֵּ֣רֶד went down, yārad צָד֣וֹק So Zadok ṣādôq הַ֠כֹּהֵן the priest, kōhēn וְנָתָ֨ן and Nathan nātān הַנָּבִ֜יא the prophet, nābîʾ וּבְנָיָ֣הוּ and Benaiah bĕnāyâ בֶן the son bēn יְהֽוֹיָדָ֗ע of Jehoiada, yĕhôyādāʿ וְהַכְּרֵתִי֙ and the Cherethites, kĕrētî וְהַפְּלֵתִ֔י and the Pelethites, pĕlētî וַיַּרְכִּ֙בוּ֙ to ride rākab אֶת and caused ʾēt שְׁלֹמֹ֔ה Solomon šĕlōmō עַל upon ʿal פִּרְדַּ֖ת mule, pirdâ הַמֶּ֣לֶךְ king melek דָּוִ֑ד David's dāwid וַיֹּלִ֥כוּ and brought hālak אֹת֖וֹ ʾēt עַל him to ʿal גִּחֽוֹן׃ Gihon. gîḥôn

וַיִּקַּח֩ took lāqaḥ צָד֨וֹק And Zadok ṣādôq הַכֹּהֵ֜ן the priest kōhēn אֶת ʾēt קֶ֤רֶן an horn qeren הַשֶּׁ֙מֶן֙ of oil šemen מִן out of min הָאֹ֔הֶל the tabernacle, ʾōhel וַיִּמְשַׁ֖ח and anointed māšaḥ אֶת ʾēt שְׁלֹמֹ֑ה Solomon. šĕlōmō וַֽיִּתְקְעוּ֙ And they blew tāqaʿ בַּשּׁוֹפָ֔ר the trumpet; šôpār וַיֹּֽאמְרוּ֙ said, ʾāmar כָּל and all kōl הָעָ֔ם the people ʿam יְחִ֖י God save ḥāyâ הַמֶּ֥לֶךְ king melek שְׁלֹמֹֽה׃ Solomon. šĕlōmō

וַיַּֽעֲל֤וּ came up ʿālâ כָל And all kōl הָעָם֙ the people ʿam אַֽחֲרָ֔יו after ʾaḥar וְהָעָם֙ him, and the people ʿam מְחַלְּלִ֣ים piped ḥālal בַּֽחֲלִלִ֔ים with pipes, ḥālîl וּשְׂמֵחִ֖ים and rejoiced śāmēaḥ שִׂמְחָ֣ה joy, śimḥâ גְדוֹלָ֑ה with great gādôl וַתִּבָּקַ֥ע rent bāqaʿ הָאָ֖רֶץ so that the earth ʾereṣ בְּקוֹלָֽם׃ with the sound of them. qôl

וַיִּשְׁמַ֣ע him heard šāmaʿ אֲדֹֽנִיָּ֗הוּ And Adonijah ʾădōniyyâ וְכָל and all kōl הַקְּרֻאִים֙ the guests qārāʾ אֲשֶׁ֣ר that ʾăšer אִתּ֔וֹ with ʾēt וְהֵ֖ם as they hēm כִּלּ֣וּ had made an end kālâ לֶֽאֱכֹ֑ל of eating. ʾākal וַיִּשְׁמַ֤ע heard šāmaʿ יוֹאָב֙ And when Joab yôʾāb אֶת ʾēt ק֣וֹל the sound qôl הַשּׁוֹפָ֔ר of the trumpet, šôpār וַיֹּ֕אמֶר he said, ʾāmar מַדּ֥וּעַ Wherefore maddûaʿ קֽוֹל noise qôl הַקִּרְיָ֖ה of the city qiryâ הוֹמָֽה׃ being in an uproar? hāmâ

עוֹדֶ֣נּוּ And while he yet ʿôd מְדַבֵּ֔ר spake, dābar וְהִנֵּ֧ה behold, hinnē יֽוֹנָתָ֛ן Jonathan yônātān בֶּן the son bēn אֶבְיָתָ֥ר of Abiathar ʾebyātār הַכֹּהֵ֖ן the priest kōhēn בָּ֑א came: bôʾ וַיֹּ֤אמֶר said ʾāmar אֲדֹֽנִיָּ֙הוּ֙ and Adonijah ʾădōniyyâ בֹּ֔א unto him, Come in; bôʾ כִּ֣י for kî אִ֥ישׁ man, ʾîš חַ֛יִל a valiant ḥayil אַ֖תָּה thou ʾattâ וְט֥וֹב good tidings. ṭôb תְּבַשֵּֽׂר׃ and bringest bāśar

וַיַּ֙עַן֙ answered ʿānâ יֽוֹנָתָ֔ן And Jonathan yônātān וַיֹּ֖אמֶר and said ʾāmar לַאֲדֹֽנִיָּ֑הוּ to Adonijah, ʾădōniyyâ אֲבָ֕ל Verily ʾăbāl אֲדֹנֵ֥ינוּ our lord ʾādôn הַמֶּֽלֶךְ king melek דָּוִ֖ד David dāwid הִמְלִ֥יךְ king. mālak אֶת ʾēt שְׁלֹמֹֽה׃ hath made Solomon šĕlōmō

וַיִּשְׁלַ֣ח hath sent šālaḥ אִתּֽוֹ with ʾēt הַ֠מֶּלֶךְ And the king melek אֶת him ʾēt צָד֨וֹק Zadok ṣādôq הַכֹּהֵ֜ן the priest, kōhēn וְאֶת ʾēt נָתָ֣ן and Nathan nātān הַנָּבִ֗יא the prophet, nābîʾ וּבְנָיָ֙הוּ֙ and Benaiah bĕnāyâ בֶּן the son bēn יְה֣וֹיָדָ֔ע of Jehoiada, yĕhôyādāʿ וְהַכְּרֵתִ֖י and the Cherethites, kĕrētî וְהַפְּלֵתִ֑י and the Pelethites, pĕlētî וַיַּרְכִּ֣בוּ and they have caused him to ride rākab אֹת֔וֹ ʾēt עַ֖ל upon ʿal פִּרְדַּ֥ת mule: pirdâ הַמֶּֽלֶךְ׃ the king's melek

וַיִּמְשְׁח֣וּ have anointed māšaḥ אֹת֡וֹ ʾēt צָד֣וֹק And Zadok ṣādôq הַכֹּהֵ֣ן the priest kōhēn וְנָתָן֩ and Nathan nātān הַנָּבִ֨יא the prophet nābîʾ לְמֶ֜לֶךְ him king melek בְּגִח֗וֹן in Gihon: gîḥôn וַיַּֽעֲל֤וּ and they are come up ʿālâ מִשָּׁם֙ from thence šām שְׂמֵחִ֔ים rejoicing, śāmēaḥ וַתֵּהֹ֖ם rang again. hûm הַקִּרְיָ֑ה so that the city qiryâ ה֥וּא This hûʾ הַקּ֖וֹל the noise qôl אֲשֶׁ֥ר that ʾăšer שְׁמַעְתֶּֽם׃ ye have heard. šāmaʿ

וְגַם And moreover gam בָּ֜אוּ came bôʾ עַבְדֵ֣י servants ʿebed הַמֶּ֗לֶךְ the king's melek לְ֠בָרֵךְ to bless bārak אֶת ʾēt אֲדֹנֵ֜ינוּ our lord ʾādôn הַמֶּ֣לֶךְ king melek דָּוִד֮ David, dāwid לֵאמֹר֒ saying, ʾāmar יֵיטֵ֨ב better yāṭab אֱלֹהִ֜יך God ʾĕlōhîm אֶת make ʾēt שֵׁ֤ם the name šēm שְׁלֹמֹה֙ of Solomon šĕlōmō מִשְּׁמֶ֔ךָ than thy name, šēm וִֽיגַדֵּ֥ל greater gādal אֶת and make ʾēt כִּסְא֖וֹ his throne kissēʾ מִכִּסְאֶ֑ךָ than thy throne. kissēʾ וַיִּשְׁתַּ֥חוּ bowed himself šāḥâ הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ And the king melek עַל upon ʿal הַמִּשְׁכָּֽב׃ the bed. miškāb

וְגַם And also gam כָּ֖כָה thus kākâ אָמַ֣ר said ʾāmar הַמֶּ֑לֶךְ the king, melek בָּר֨וּךְ Blessed bārak יְהוָ֜ה the Lord yĕhōwâ אֱלֹהֵ֣י God ʾĕlōhîm יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל of Israel, yiśrāʾēl אֲשֶׁ֨ר which ʾăšer נָתַ֥ן hath given nātan הַיּ֛וֹם this day, yôm יֹשֵׁ֥ב to sit yāšab עַל on ʿal כִּסְאִ֖י my throne kissēʾ וְעֵינַ֥י mine eyes ʿayin רֹאֽוֹת׃ even seeing rāʾâ

וַיֶּֽחֶרְדוּ֙ were afraid, ḥārad וַיָּקֻ֔מוּ and rose up, qûm כָּל And all kōl הַ֨קְּרֻאִ֔ים the guests qārāʾ אֲשֶׁ֖ר that ʾăšer לַאֲדֹֽנִיָּ֑הוּ with Adonijah ʾădōniyyâ וַיֵּֽלְכ֖וּ and went hālak אִ֥ישׁ every man ʾîš לְדַרְכּֽוֹ׃ his way. derek

וַאֲדֹ֣נִיָּ֔הוּ And Adonijah ʾădōniyyâ יָרֵ֖א feared yārēʾ מִפְּנֵ֣י because pānîm שְׁלֹמֹ֑ה of Solomon, šĕlōmō וַיָּ֣קָם and arose, qûm וַיֵּ֔לֶךְ and went, hālak וַֽיַּחֲזֵ֖ק and caught hold ḥāzaq בְּקַרְנ֥וֹת on the horns qeren הַמִּזְבֵּֽחַ׃ of the altar. mizbēaḥ

וַיֻּגַּ֤ד And it was told nāgad לִשְׁלֹמֹה֙ Solomon, šĕlōmō לֵאמֹ֔ר saying, ʾāmar הִנֵּה֙ Behold, hinnē אֲדֹ֣נִיָּ֔הוּ Adonijah ʾădōniyyâ יָרֵ֖א feareth yārēʾ אֶת ʾēt הַמֶּ֣לֶךְ king melek שְׁלֹמֹ֑ה Solomon: šĕlōmō וְ֠הִנֵּה for, lo, hinnē אָחַ֞ז he hath caught hold ʾāḥaz בְּקַרְנ֤וֹת on the horns qeren הַמִּזְבֵּ֙חַ֙ of the altar, mizbēaḥ לֵאמֹ֔ר saying, ʾāmar יִשָּׁבַֽע swear šābaʿ לִ֤י כַיּוֹם֙ unto me to day yôm הַמֶּ֣לֶךְ Let king melek שְׁלֹמֹ֔ה Solomon šĕlōmō אִם that he will not ʾim יָמִ֥ית slay mût אֶת ʾēt עַבְדּ֖וֹ his servant ʿebed בֶּחָֽרֶב׃ with the sword. ḥereb

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר said, ʾāmar שְׁלֹמֹ֔ה And Solomon šĕlōmō אִ֚ם If ʾim יִֽהְיֶ֣ה he will shew hāyâ לְבֶן man, bēn חַ֔יִל himself a worthy ḥayil לֹֽא there shall not lōʾ יִפֹּ֥ל fall nāpal מִשַּֽׂעֲרָת֖וֹ an hair of him śaʿărâ אָ֑רְצָה to the earth: ʾereṣ וְאִם but if ʾim רָעָ֥ה wickedness raʿ תִמָּֽצֵא shall be found māṣāʾ ב֖וֹ וָמֵֽת׃ in him, he shall die. mût

וַיִּשְׁלַ֞ח sent, šālaḥ הַמֶּ֣לֶךְ So king melek שְׁלֹמֹ֗ה Solomon šĕlōmō וַיֹּרִדֻ֙הוּ֙ and they brought him down yārad מֵעַ֣ל from ʿal הַמִּזְבֵּ֔חַ the altar. mizbēaḥ וַיָּבֹ֕א And he came bôʾ וַיִּשְׁתַּ֖חוּ and bowed himself šāḥâ לַמֶּ֣לֶךְ to king melek שְׁלֹמֹ֑ה Solomon: šĕlōmō וַיֹּֽאמֶר said ʾāmar ל֥וֹ שְׁלֹמֹ֖ה and Solomon šĕlōmō לֵ֥ךְ unto him, Go hālak לְבֵיתֶֽךָ׃ to thine house. bayit
