וּפְלִשְׁתִּ֖ים Now the Philistines pĕlištî נִלְחֲמ֣וּ fought lāḥam בְיִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל against Israel; yiśrāʾēl וַיָּ֑נָס fled nûs אִֽישׁ and the men ʾîš יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ of Israel yiśrāʾēl מִפְּנֵ֣י from before pānîm פְלִשְׁתִּ֔ים the Philistines, pĕlištî וַיִּפְּל֥וּ and fell down nāpal חֲלָלִ֖ים slain ḥālāl בְּהַ֥ר in mount har גִּלְבֹּֽעַ׃ Gilboa. gilbōaʿ

וַיַּדְבְּק֣וּ followed hard dābaq פְלִשְׁתִּ֔ים And the Philistines pĕlištî אַֽחֲרֵ֥י after ʾaḥar שָׁא֖וּל Saul, šāʾûl וְאַֽחֲרֵ֣י and after ʾaḥar בָנָ֑יו his sons; bēn וַיַּכּ֣וּ slew nākâ פְלִשְׁתִּ֗ים and the Philistines pĕlištî אֶת ʾēt יֽוֹנָתָ֧ן Jonathan, yônātān וְאֶת ʾēt אֲבִֽינָדָ֛ב and Abinadab, ʾăbînādāb וְאֶת ʾēt מַלְכִּי שׁ֖וּעַ and Malchi-shua, malkîšûaʿ בְּנֵ֥י the sons bēn שָׁאֽוּל׃ of Saul. šāʾûl

וַתִּכְבַּ֤ד went sore kābad הַמִּלְחָמָה֙ And the battle milḥāmâ עַל against ʿal שָׁא֔וּל Saul, šāʾûl וַיִּמְצָאֻ֖הוּ hit māṣāʾ הַמּוֹרִ֣ים and the archers yārâ בַּקָּ֑שֶׁת qešet וַיָּ֖חֶל him, and he was wounded ḥûl מִן of min הַיּוֹרִֽים׃ the archers. yārâ

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר Then said ʾāmar שָׁאוּל֩ Saul šāʾûl אֶל to ʾēl נֹשֵׂ֨א his armourbearer, nāśāʾ כֵלָ֜יו kĕlî שְׁלֹ֥ף Draw šālap חַרְבְּךָ֣׀ thy sword, ḥereb וְדָקְרֵ֣נִי and thrust me through dāqar בָ֗הּ פֶּן therewith; lest pēn יָבֹ֜אוּ come bôʾ הָֽעֲרֵלִ֤ים uncircumcised ʿārēl הָאֵ֙לֶּה֙ these ʾēlle וְהִתְעַלְּלוּ and abuse ʿālal בִ֔י וְלֹ֤א not; lōʾ אָבָה֙ would ʾābâ נֹשֵׂ֣א me. But his armourbearer nāśāʾ כֵלָ֔יו kĕlî כִּ֥י for kî יָרֵ֖א afraid. yārēʾ מְאֹ֑ד he was sore mĕʾōd וַיִּקַּ֤ח took lāqaḥ שָׁאוּל֙ So Saul šāʾûl אֶת ʾēt הַחֶ֔רֶב a sword, ḥereb וַיִּפֹּ֖ל and fell nāpal עָלֶֽיהָ׃ upon it. ʿal

וַיַּ֥רְא saw rāʾâ נֹשֵֽׂא And when his armourbearer nāśāʾ כֵלָ֖יו kĕlî כִּ֣י that kî מֵ֣ת was dead, mût שָׁא֑וּל Saul šāʾûl וַיִּפֹּ֥ל fell nāpal גַּם likewise gam ה֛וּא he hûʾ עַל on ʿal הַחֶ֖רֶב the sword, ḥereb וַיָּמֹֽת׃ and died. mût

וַיָּ֤מָת died, mût שָׁאוּל֙ So Saul šāʾûl וּשְׁלֹ֣שֶׁת and his three šālôš בָּנָ֔יו sons, bēn וְכָל and all kōl בֵּית֖וֹ his house bayit יַחְדָּ֥ו together. yaḥad מֵֽתוּ׃ died mût

וַ֠יִּרְאוּ saw rāʾâ כָּל And when all kōl אִ֨ישׁ the men ʾîš יִשְׂרָאֵ֤ל of Israel yiśrāʾēl אֲשֶׁר that ʾăšer בָּעֵ֙מֶק֙ in the valley ʿēmeq כִּ֣י that kî נָ֔סוּ they fled, nûs וְכִי and that kî מֵ֖תוּ were dead, mût שָׁא֣וּל Saul šāʾûl וּבָנָ֑יו and his sons bēn וַיַּֽעַזְב֤וּ then they forsook ʿāzab עָֽרֵיהֶם֙ their cities, ʿîr וַיָּנֻ֔סוּ and fled: nûs וַיָּבֹ֣אוּ came bôʾ פְלִשְׁתִּ֔ים and the Philistines pĕlištî וַיֵּֽשְׁב֖וּ and dwelt in them. yāšab בָּהֶֽם׃

וַֽיְהִי֙ And it came to pass hāyâ מִֽמָּחֳרָ֔ת on the morrow, moḥŏrāt וַיָּבֹ֣אוּ came bôʾ פְלִשְׁתִּ֔ים when the Philistines pĕlištî לְפַשֵּׁ֖ט to strip pāšaṭ אֶת ʾēt הַֽחֲלָלִ֑ים the slain, ḥālāl וַֽיִּמְצְא֤וּ that they found māṣāʾ אֶת ʾēt שָׁאוּל֙ Saul šāʾûl וְאֶת ʾēt בָּנָ֔יו and his sons bēn נֹֽפְלִ֖ים fallen nāpal בְּהַ֥ר in mount har גִּלְבֹּֽעַ׃ Gilboa. gilbōaʿ

וַיַּ֨פְשִׁיטֻ֔הוּ And when they had stripped pāšaṭ וַיִּשְׂא֥וּ him, they took nāśāʾ אֶת ʾēt רֹאשׁ֖וֹ his head, rōš וְאֶת ʾēt כֵּלָ֑יו and his armour, kĕlî וַיְשַׁלְּח֨וּ and sent šālaḥ בְאֶֽרֶץ into the land ʾereṣ פְלִשְׁתִּ֜ים of the Philistines pĕlištî סָבִ֗יב round about, sābîb לְבַשֵּׂ֛ר to carry tidings bāśar אֶת ʾēt עֲצַבֵּיהֶ֖ם unto their idols, ʿāṣāb וְאֶת ʾēt הָעָֽם׃ and to the people. ʿam

וַיָּשִׂ֙ימוּ֙ And they put śûm אֶת ʾēt כֵּלָ֔יו his armour kĕlî בֵּ֖ית in the house bayit אֱלֹֽהֵיהֶ֑ם of their gods, ʾĕlōhîm וְאֶת ʾēt גֻּלְגָּלְתּ֥וֹ his head gulgōlet תָֽקְע֖וּ and fastened tāqaʿ בֵּ֥ית in the temple bayit דָּגֽוֹן׃ of Dagon. dāgôn

וַֽיִּשְׁמְע֔וּ heard šāmaʿ כֹּ֖ל And when all kōl יָבֵ֣ישׁ Jabesh-gilead yābēš גִּלְעָ֑ד gilʿād אֵ֛ת ʾēt כָּל all kōl אֲשֶׁר that ʾăšer עָשׂ֥וּ had done ʿāśâ פְלִשְׁתִּ֖ים the Philistines pĕlištî לְשָׁאֽוּל׃ to Saul, šāʾûl

וַיָּקוּמוּ֮ They arose, qûm כָּל all kōl אִ֣ישׁ men, ʾîš חַיִל֒ the valiant ḥayil וַיִּשְׂא֞וּ and took away nāśāʾ אֶת ʾēt גּוּפַ֣ת the body gûpâ שָׁא֗וּל of Saul, šāʾûl וְאֵת֙ ʾēt גּוּפֹ֣ת and the bodies gûpâ בָּנָ֔יו of his sons, bēn וַיְבִיא֖וּם and brought bôʾ יָבֵ֑ישָׁה them to Jabesh, yābēš וַיִּקְבְּר֨וּ and buried qābar אֶת ʾēt עַצְמֽוֹתֵיהֶ֜ם their bones ʿeṣem תַּ֤חַת under taḥat הָֽאֵלָה֙ the oak ʾēlâ בְּיָבֵ֔שׁ in Jabesh, yābēš וַיָּצ֖וּמוּ and fasted ṣûm שִׁבְעַ֥ת seven šebaʿ יָמִֽים׃ days. yôm

וַיָּ֣מָת died mût שָׁא֗וּל So Saul šāʾûl בְּמַֽעֲלוֹ֙ he committed māʿal אֲשֶׁ֣ר which ʾăšer מָעַ֣ל for his transgression maʿal בַּֽיהוָ֔ה against the Lord, yĕhōwâ עַל against ʿal דְּבַ֥ר the word dābār יְהוָ֖ה of the Lord, yĕhōwâ אֲשֶׁ֣ר which ʾăšer לֹֽא not, lōʾ שָׁמָ֑ר he kept šāmar וְגַם and also gam לִשְׁא֥וֹל for asking šāʾal בָּא֖וֹב of a familiar spirit, ʾôb לִדְרֽוֹשׁ׃ to inquire dāraš

וְלֹֽא not lōʾ דָרַ֥שׁ And inquired dāraš בַּֽיהוָ֖ה of the Lord: yĕhōwâ וַיְמִיתֵ֑הוּ therefore he slew mût וַיַּסֵּב֙ him, and turned sābab אֶת ʾēt הַמְּלוּכָ֔ה the kingdom mĕlûkâ לְדָוִ֖יד unto David dāwid בֶּן the son bēn יִשָֽׁי׃ of Jesse. yišay
