ಮೋಶೆಯು ನಾಲ್ವತ್ತು ಹಗಲು ನಾಲ್ವತ್ತು ರಾತ್ರಿ ರೊಟ್ಟಿಯನ್ನು ತಿನ್ನದೆ ನೀರನ್ನು ಕುಡಿಯದೆ ಅಲ್ಲಿ ಕರ್ತನ ಸಂಗಡ ಇದ್ದನು. ಆತನು ಒಡಂಬಡಿಕೆಯ ವಾಕ್ಯಗಳಾದ ಹತ್ತು ಆಜ್ಞೆಗಳನ್ನು ಹಲಗೆಗಳ ಮೇಲೆ ಬರೆದನು.
