தங்கள் பிதாக்களை எகிப்துதேசத்திலிருந்து புறப்படப்பண்ணின அவர்களுடைய தேவனாகிய கர்த்தரை விட்டு, தங்களைச் சுற்றிலும் இருக்கிற ஜனங்கலுடைய தேவர்களாகிய அந்நிய தேவர்களைப் பின்பற்றிப்போய், அவர்களைப் பணிந்துகொண்டு, கர்த்தருக்குக் கோபமூட்டினார்கள்

கர்த்தர் இஸ்ரவேலரை எகிப்திலிருந்து வெளியே அழைத்து வந்திருந்தார். இந்த ஜனங்களின் முற்பிதாக்கள் கர்த்தரை ஆராதித்தனர். ஆனால் இஸ்ரவேலரோ கர்த்தரைப் பின்பற்றுவதை விட்டு விலகி, தங்களைச் சுற்றிலும் வாழ்ந்த ஜனங்களின் பொய்த் தெய்வங்களை தொழுதுகொள்ள ஆரம்பித்தனர். அது கர்த்தரை கோபத்திற்குள்ளாக்கிற்று.

உன் தேவனாகிய கர்த்தருடைய கோபம் உன்மேல் மூண்டு உன்னைப் பூமியில் வைக்காமல் அழித்துப்போடாதபடிக்கு, உங்களைச் சுற்றிலும் இருக்கிற ஜனங்களின் தேவர்களாகிய அந்நிய தேவர்களைப் பின்பற்றாதிருப்பீர்களாக.

நீ அவைகளை நமஸ்கரிக்கவும் சேவிக்கவும் வேண்டாம்; உன் தேவனாகிய கர்த்தராயிருக்கிற நான் எரிச்சலுள்ள தேவனாயிருந்து, என்னைப் பகைக்கிறவர்களைக்குறித்துப் பிதாக்களுடைய அக்கிரமத்தைப் பிள்ளைகளிடத்தில் மூன்றாம் நான்காம் தலைமுறைமட்டும் விசாரிக்கிறவராயிருக்கிறேன்.

நூதன தேவர்களைத் தெரிந்துகொண்டார்கள்; அப்பொழுது யுத்தம் வாசல்வரையும் வந்தது; இஸ்ரவேலிலே நாற்பதினாயிரம் பேருக்குள்ளே கேடகமும் ஈட்டியும் காணப்பட்டதுண்டோ?
