1 Now a certain man was sick, Lazarus from Bethany, of the village of Mary and her sister, Martha.ત્યાં લાજરસ નામનો એક માણસ હતો જે માંદો હતો. તે બેથનિયાના ગામમાં રહેતો હતો. આ તે ગામ હતું જ્યાં મરિયમ તથા તેની બહેન માર્થા રહેતાં હતાં.

2 It was that Mary who had anointed the Lord with ointment, and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother, Lazarus, was sick.(મરિયમ એ જ સ્ત્રી છે જેણે પ્રભુ (ઈસુ) પર અત્તર છાંટયું હતું અને તેના પગ પોતાના વાળ વડે લૂછયા હતા,) મરિયમનો ભાઈ લાજરસ હતો, જે માણસ હવે માંદો હતો.

3 The sisters therefore sent to him, saying, "Lord, behold, he for whom you have great affection is sick."તેથી મરિયમ અને માર્થાએ ઈસુને કહેવા માટે એક વ્યક્તિને મોકલી, “પ્રભુ, તારો પ્રિય મિત્ર લાજરસ માંદો છે.”

4 But when Jesus heard it, he said, "This sickness is not to death, but for the glory of God, that God's Son may be glorified by it."જ્યારે ઈસુએ આ સાંભળ્યું, તેણે કહ્યું, “આ માંદગીનો અંત મૃત્યુ થશે નહિ. પરંતુ આ માંદગી દેવના મહિમા માટે છે. દેવના દીકરાનો મહિમા લાવવા માટે આમ થયું છે.”

5 Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus.(ઈસુએ માર્થા, તેની બહેન અને લાજરસ પર પ્રેમ રાખ્યો હતો.)

6 When therefore he heard that he was sick, he stayed two days in the place where he was.યારે ઈસુએ સાંભળ્યું કે લાજરસ માંદો છે ત્યારે પોતે જ્યાં હતો તે જ જગ્યાએ તે બે દિવસ વધારે રહ્યો.

7 Then after this he said to the disciples, "Let's go into Judea again."પછી ઈસુએ તેના શિષ્યોને કહ્યું, “આપણે પાછા યહૂદિયા ફરીથી જવું જોઈએ.”

8 The disciples told him, "Rabbi, the Jews were just trying to stone you, and are you going there again?"શિષ્યોએ કહ્યું, “પણ રાબ્બી, યહૂદિયામાં યહૂદિઓ તને પથ્થરો વડે મારી નાખવાનો પ્રયત્ન કરતા હતા. તે ફક્ત થોડા સમય અગાઉ થયું હતું. હવે તું ત્યાં પાછો જવા ઈચ્છે છે?”

9 Jesus answered, "Aren't there twelve hours of daylight? If a man walks in the day, he doesn't stumble, because he sees the light of this world.ઈસુએ ઉત્તર આપ્યો, “ત્યાં દિવસના બાર કલાક પ્રકાશના હોય છે. ખરું ને? જો કોઈ વ્યક્તિ દિવસ દરમ્યાન ચાલે તો પછી તે ઠોકર ખાઈને પડતો નથી. શા માટે? કારણ કે તે આ જગતના પ્રકાશ વડે જોઈ શકે છે.

10 But if a man walks in the night, he stumbles, because the light isn't in him."પણ જ્યારે વ્યક્તિ રાત્રી દરમ્યાન ચાલે છે, તે ઠોકર ખાય છે. શા માટે? કારણ કે તેને જોવા માટે મદદ કરનાર પ્રકાશ હોતો નથી.”

11 He said these things, and after that, he said to them, "Our friend, Lazarus, has fallen asleep, but I am going so that I may awake him out of sleep."ઈસુએ આ વાતો કર્યા પછી તેણે કહ્યું, “આપણો મિત્ર લાજરસ હવે ઊંઘે છે. પણ હું તેને જગાડવા જઈશ.”

12 The disciples therefore said, "Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will recover."શિષ્યોએ કહ્યું, “પ્રભુ, પણ જો તે ઊંઘતો હશે તો તે સાજો થશે.”

13 Now Jesus had spoken of his death, but they thought that he spoke of taking rest in sleep.ઈસુએ તો તેના મરણ વિષે કહ્યુ હતુ: પણ ઈસુના શિષ્યોને એવું લાગ્યું કે તેણે ઊઘમાં વિસામો લેવા વિષે કહ્યુ હતું.

14 So Jesus said to them plainly then, "Lazarus is dead.તેથી ત્યાર બાદ ઈસુએ સ્પષ્ટ કહ્યું, “લાજરસ મૃત્યુ પામેલ છે.

15 I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, so that you may believe. Nevertheless, let's go to him."અને મને આનંદ છે કે હું ત્યાં ન હતો. હું તમારી ખાતર પ્રસન્ન છું. કારણ કે હવે તમે મારામાં વિશ્વાસ કરશો. હવે આપણે તેની પાસે જઈશું.”

16 Thomas therefore, who is called Didymus,{"Didymus" means "Twin"} said to his fellow disciples, "Let's go also, that we may die with him."પછી થોમાએ (જે દિદુમસ કહેવાય છે) બીજા શિષ્યોને કહ્યું, “આપણે પણ જઈશું. આપણે યહૂદિયામાં ઈસુ સાથે મૃત્યુ પામીશું.”

17 So when Jesus came, he found that he had been in the tomb four days already.ઈસુ બેથનિયામાં આવ્યો. ઈસુએ જોયું કે લાજરસ ખરેખર મૃત્યુ પામેલો છે અને ચાર દિવસથી કબરમાં છે.

18 Now Bethany was near Jerusalem, about fifteen stadia{15 stadia is about 2.8 kilometers or 1.7 miles} away.બેથનિયા યરૂશાલેમથી બે માઈલ દૂર હતું.

19 Many of the Jews had joined the women around Martha and Mary, to console them concerning their brother.ઘણા યહૂદિઓ માર્થા અને મરિયમ પાસે આવ્યા. યહૂદિઓ માર્થા અને મરિયમને તેમના ભાઈ લાજરસ સંબંધી દિલાસો આપવા આવ્યા હતા.

20 Then when Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went and met him, but Mary stayed in the house.માર્થાએ સાંભળ્યું કે ઈસુ આવે છે. તે ઈસુને મળવા સામે ગઈ. પરંતુ મરિયમ ઘરે રહી.

21 Therefore Martha said to Jesus, "Lord, if you would have been here, my brother wouldn't have died.માર્થાએ ઈસુને કહ્યું, “પ્રભુ, જો તું અહીં હોત તો મારો ભાઈ મરત નહિ.

22 Even now I know that, whatever you ask of God, God will give you."પરંતુ હું જાણું છું કે હજુ પણ તું દેવ પાસે જે કંઈ માગશે તે દેવ તને આપશે.”

23 Jesus said to her, "Your brother will rise again."ઈસુએ કહ્યું, “તારો ભાઈ ઊઠશે અને તે ફરીથી જીવતો થશે.”

24 Martha said to him, "I know that he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day."માર્થાએ ઉત્તર આપ્યો, “છેલ્લે દિવસે લોકો પુનરુંત્થાન (મરણમાંથી ઉઠશે) પામશે ત્યારે તે ફરીથી પાછો ઊઠશે. એ હું જાણું છું.

25 Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me, though he die, yet will he live.ઈસુએ તેને કહ્યું, “હું પુનરુંત્થાન છું. હું જીવન છું. જે વ્યક્તિ મારામાં વિશ્વાસ કરે છે તેના મૃત્યુ પછી ફરીથી જીવન પ્રાપ્ત કરશે.

26 Whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?"અને જે વ્યક્તિ જીવે છે અને વિશ્વાસ કરે છે તે ખરેખર કદી મૃત્યુ પામશે નહિ. માર્થા, શું તું એવો વિશ્વાસ કરે છે?”

27 She said to him, "Yes, Lord. I have come to believe that you are the Christ, God's Son, he who comes into the world."માર્થાએ ઉત્તર આપ્યો, “હા, પ્રભુ. મને વિશ્વાસ છે કે તું ખ્રિસ્ત છે, દેવનો દીકરો છે. તું જે જગતમાં આવનાર તે જ છે.”

28 When she had said this, she went away, and called Mary, her sister, secretly, saying, "The Teacher is here, and is calling you."માર્થાએ આ બાબત કહી પછી તેની બહેન મરિયમ પાસે પાછી ગઈ. માર્થાએ એકલી મરિયમ સાથે વાત કરી. માર્થાએ કહ્યું, “ગુરુંજી (ઈસુ) અહીં છે. તે તને બોલાવે છે.”

29 When she heard this, she arose quickly, and went to him.જ્યારે મરિયમે આ સાંભળ્યુ, તે ઊભી થઈ અને ઝડપથી ઈસુ પાસે ગઈ.

30 Now Jesus had not yet come into the village, but was in the place where Martha met him.ઈસુ હજુ ગામમાં આવ્યો ન હતો. તે હજુ માર્થા તેને જ્યાં મળી તે જગ્યાએ હતો.

31 Then the Jews who were with her in the house, and were consoling her, when they saw Mary, that she rose up quickly and went out, followed her, saying, "She is going to the tomb to weep there."યહૂદિઓ મરિયમ સાથે ઘરમાં હતા. તેઓ તેને દિલાસો આપતા હતા. તેઓએ જોયું કે મરિયમ ઉતાવળથી ઊભી થઈને બહાર ગઈ. તેઓએ ધાર્યું કે તે લાજરસની કબર તરફ જાય છે. તેઓએ વિચાર્યુ કે તે ત્યાં વિલાપ કરવા જાય છે. તેથી તેઓ તેને અનુસર્યા.

32 Therefore when Mary came to where Jesus was, and saw him, she fell down at his feet, saying to him, "Lord, if you would have been here, my brother wouldn't have died."મરિયમ ઈસુ જે જગ્યાએ હતો ત્યાં ગઈ. જ્યારે તેણે ઈસુને જોયો. તે તેના પગે પડી. મરિયમે કહ્યું, “પ્રભુ, જો તું અહીં હોત તો મારો ભાઈ મરત નહિ.”

33 When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews weeping who came with her, he groaned in the spirit, and was troubled,ઈસુએ જોયું કે મરિયમ રડતી હતી. ઈસુએ તે પણ જોયું કે યહૂદિઓ તેની સાથે આવ્યા હતા. તેઓ પણ રડતા હતા. ઈસુનું હૃદય ઘણું દુઃખી થયું અને તે ઘણો વ્યાકુળ હતો.

34 and said, "Where have you laid him?" They told him, "Lord, come and see."ઈસુએ પૂછયું, “તમે તેને (લાજરસ) ક્યાં મૂક્યો છે?”તેઓ કહે છે, “પ્રભુ આવીને જો.”

35 Jesus wept.ઈસુ રડ્યો.

36 The Jews therefore said, "See how much affection he had for him!"અને યહૂદિઓએ કહ્યું, “જુઓ! ઈસુ લાજરસ પર પ્રેમ રાખતો હતો!”

37 Some of them said, "Couldn't this man, who opened the eyes of him who was blind, have also kept this man from dying?"પણ કેટલાક યહૂદિઓએ કહ્યું, “ઈસુએ આંધળા માણસની આંખો સાજી કરી છે. ઈસુમાં શું લાજરસ ન મરે એવું પણ કરવાની શક્તિ ન હતી?”

38 Jesus therefore, again groaning in himself, came to the tomb. Now it was a cave, and a stone lay against it.ફરીથી ઈસુને તેના હૃદયમાં ઘણું દુઃખ થયું.જ્યાં લાજરસ હતો તે કબર પાસે ઈસુ આવ્યો. તે કબર એક ગુફા હતી. તેના પ્રવેશદ્વારને મોટા પથ્થર વડે ઢાંકેલું હતું.

39 Jesus said, "Take away the stone." Martha, the sister of him who was dead, said to him, "Lord, by this time there is a stench, for he has been dead four days."ઈસુએ કહ્યું, “આ પથ્થરને દૂર કરો.”માર્થાએ કહ્યું, “પણ પ્રભુ, લાજરસને મરી ગયાને હજુ ચાર દિવસ થયા છે. ત્યાં દુર્ગંધ હશે.” માર્થા મૃત્યુ પામનાર માણસ (લાજરસ)ની બહેન હતી.

40 Jesus said to her, "Didn't I tell you that if you believed, you would see God's glory?"પછી ઈસુએ માર્થાને કહ્યું, “યાદ કર મેં તને શું કહ્યું હતું?” મેં કહ્યું, “જો તું વિશ્વાસ કરશે તો પછી તું દેવનો મહિમા જોઈ શકશે.”

41 So they took away the stone from the place where the dead man was lying. Jesus lifted up his eyes, and said, "Father, I thank you that you listened to me.તેથી તેઓએ પ્રવેશદ્વાર પરથી પથ્થર હઠાવ્યો. પછી ઈસુએ ઊંચે જોયું અને કહ્યું, “પિતા, હું તારો આભાર માનું છું. કારણ કે તેં મને સાંભળ્યો.

42 I know that you always listen to me, but because of the multitude that stands around I said this, that they may believe that you sent me."હું જાણું છું કે તુ મને હંમેશા સાંભળે છે. પરંતુ મેં આ કહ્યું કારણ કે અહીં મારી આજુબાજુ લોકો છે. હું ઈચ્છું છું કે તેઓ વિશ્વાસ કરે કે તેં મને મોકલ્યો છે.”

43 When he had said this, he cried with a loud voice, "Lazarus, come out!"ઈસુએ આમ કહ્યા પછી મોટા સાદે પોકાર કર્યો, “લાજરસ બહાર આવ!”

44 He who was dead came out, bound hand and foot with wrappings, and his face was wrapped around with a cloth. Jesus said to them, "Free him, and let him go."તે મૃત્યુ પામેલ માણસ (લાજરસ) બહાર આવ્યો. તેના હાથ અને પગ લૂગડાંના ટૂકડાઓથી વીંટળાયેલા હતા. તેનો ચહેરો રૂમાલથી ઢાંકેલો હતો. ઈસુએ લોકોને કહ્યું, “તેના પરથી લૂગડાંના ટૂકડા લઈ લો અને તેને જવા દો.”

45 Therefore many of the Jews, who came to Mary and saw what Jesus did, believed in him.ત્યાં ઘણા યહૂદિઓ મરિયમની મુલાકાતે આવ્યા હતા. આ યહૂદિઓએ ઈસુએ જે કર્યુ તે જોયું અને આ યહૂદિઓમાંના ઘણાએ ઈસુમાં વિશ્વાસ કર્યો.

46 But some of them went away to the Pharisees, and told them the things which Jesus had done.પરંતુ કેટલાક યહૂદિઓ ફરોશીઓ પાસે ગયા. તેઓએ ઈસુએ જે કર્યુ તે ફરોશીઓને કહ્યું.

47 The chief priests therefore and the Pharisees gathered a council, and said, "What are we doing? For this man does many signs.પછી મુખ્ય યાજકો અને ફરોશીઓએ યહૂદિઓની સભા બોલાવી. તેઓએ કહ્યું, “આપણે શું કરવું જોઈએ? આ માણસ (ઈસુ) ઘણા ચમત્કારો કરે છે.

48 If we leave him alone like this, everyone will believe in him, and the Romans will come and take away both our place and our nation."જો આપણે તેને આ ચમત્કારો કરવાનું ચાલુ રાખવા દઈશું, તો બધા લોકો તેનામાં વિશ્વાસ કરશે. પછી રોમનો આવશે અને આપણા મંદિર અને રાષ્ટ્રને લઈ લેશે.”

49 But a certain one of them, Caiaphas, being high priest that year, said to them, "You know nothing at all,ત્યાં કાયાફા નામનો એક માણસ હતો. તે વરસે તે પ્રમુખ યાજક હતો. કાયાફાએ કહ્યું, “તમે લોકો કશું જાણતા નથી!

50 nor do you consider that it is advantageous for us that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation not perish."લોકોના માટે એક માણસનું મરવું તે આખા રાષ્ટ્રનો વિનાશ થાય વે કરતાં વધારે સારું છે. પરંતુ તમને આનો ખ્યાલ આવતો નથી.”

51 Now he didn't say this of himself, but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus would die for the nation,કાયાફાએ આ વિષે તેની જાતે આનો વિચાર કર્યો નહિ. તે વરસનો તે મુખ્ય યાજક હતો. તેથી તેણે ખરેખર ભવિષ્ય કહ્યું હતું કે ઈસુ યહૂદિઓના રાષ્ટ્ર માટે મૃત્યુ પામશે.

52 and not for the nation only, but that he might also gather together into one the children of God who are scattered abroad.હા, ઈસુ યહૂદિ રાષ્ટ્રના લોકો માટે મરશે. પરંતુ ઈસુ દેવનાં બીજા બાળકો જે આખા જગતમાં વિખરાયેલા છે તેમનાં માટે પણ મૃત્યુ પામશે. તે બધાઓને ભેગા કરવા અને તે લોકોને એક બનાવવા માટે તે મૃત્યુ પામશે.

53 So from that day forward they took counsel that they might put him to death.તે દિવસે યહૂદિ આગેવાનોએ ઈસુને મારી નાખવાની યોજના કરવાનું શરું કર્યુ.

54 Jesus therefore walked no more openly among the Jews, but departed from there into the country near the wilderness, to a city called Ephraim. He stayed there with his disciples.તેથી ઈસુએ યહૂદિઓમાં આજુબાજુ જાહેરમાં ફરવાનું બંધ કર્યુ. ઈસુએ યરૂશાલેમ છોડ્યું અને રણની નજીકની જગ્યાએ ગયો. ઈસુ એફ્રાઈમ નામના શહેરમાં ગયો. ઈસુ ત્યાં તેના શિષ્યો સાથે રહ્યો.

55 Now the Passover of the Jews was at hand. Many went up from the country to Jerusalem before the Passover, to purify themselves.યહૂદિઓના પાસ્ખાપર્વનો લગભગ તે સમય હતો. તે દેશમાંથી ઘણા લોકો પાસ્ખાપર્વ પહેલા યરૂશાલેમ ગયા. તેઓ પાસ્ખાપર્વ પહેલા પોતાને શુદ્ધ કરવા માટે ખાસ વસ્તુઓ કરવા ગયા હતા.

56 Then they sought for Jesus and spoke one with another, as they stood in the temple, "What do you think--that he isn't coming to the feast at all?"લોકો ઈસુની શોધ કરી રહ્યા હતા. તેઓ મંદિરમાં ઊભા રહીને એકબીજાને પૂછતા હતા. શું તે (ઈસુ) ઉત્સવમાં આવે છે? તમે શું ધારો છો?”

57 Now the chief priests and the Pharisees had commanded that if anyone knew where he was, he should report it, that they might seize him.પરંતુ મુખ્ય યાજકો અને ફરોશીઓએ ઈસુ વિષે ખાસ હુકમ આપ્યો હતો. તેઓએ કહ્યું, કે જો કોઈ વ્યક્તિ ઈસુ ક્યાં છે તે જાણે તો તે માણસે તેઓને જણાવવું જોઈએ. પછી મુખ્ય યાજકો અને ફરોશીઓ ઈસુને પકડી શકે.
