2 Kings 17:35
યહોવાએ તેઓની સાથે કરાર કર્યો હતો કે, તેઓએ વિદેશીઓના કોઈ-દેવોની પૂજા કરવી નહિ અને તેઓને યજ્ઞો અર્પણ કરવાં નહિ.

તમાંરી વચ્ચે જે રાષ્ટ્રો બાકી છે, તમાંરે તેમની સાથે મિત્ર ન બનવું જોઈએ, અને તમાંરે તેમનાં દેવો અનુસરવા ન જોઈએ. તમાંરે તેમના દેવોના નામ વાપરી સમ ન ખાવા, તમાંરે તેઓના દેવો પૂજવા નહિ કે તમાંરે નીચું નમીને તેમના પગે પડવુ નહિ.
Deuteronomy 4:23
પણ સાવધાન! તમાંરા દેવ યહોવાએ તમાંરી સાથે જે કરાર કર્યો છે, તેને ભૂલશો નહિ, તમાંરા દેવ યહોવાએ જેની સ્પષ્ટ મનાઈ કરી છે એવી કોઈ પણ મૂર્તિ બનાવશો નહિ.

પણ સાવધાન રહેજે. તું જે દેશમાં જાય છે, ત્યાંના વતનીઓ સાથે કરાર કરવો નહિ, નહિતર તેઓ તને જાળમાં ફસાવશે.

ખેતરોમાં ઊભા કરેલા અસહાય ચાડિયાની જેમ તેઓના દેવ ત્યાં ઊભા રહે છે! તે બોલી શકતા નથી, તે ચાલી શકતા નથી તેથી ઊંચકીને લઇ જવા પડે છે. આવા દેવોથી ડરશો નહિ, તે કશી ઇજા કરી શકે તેમ નથી, તેમ જ કશું ભલું કરવાની પણ એમની શકિત નથી.”

તેમણે યહોવાના હુકમોની, તેમના પિતૃઓએ કરેલા કરારની અવગણના કરી તેમજ તેણે તેમને આપેલી ચેતવણીઓની કાળજી ન કરી. તેઓએ નકામી મૂર્તિઓની પૂજા કરી. આસપાસની પ્રજાઓનું અનુકરણ કર્યુ જેમના વિષે યહોવાએ તેમને ન કરવાની આજ્ઞા આપી હતી.
Deuteronomy 29:10
“આજે તમે બધા વંશોના વડાઓ, આગેવાનો, ઇસ્રાએલના લોકો, તમાંરા ન્યાયાધીશો, તથા વહીવટી અધિકારીઓ-અહીં તમાંરા યહોવા દેવના સાન્નિધ્યમાં ઊભા છો.

“તમાંરા કોઈ પ્રબોધક કે સ્વપ્નદૃષ્ટા તમાંરી પાસે આવશે અને કોઈ અદૃભુત ઘટના કે ચમત્કારની આગાહી કરીને તમે કદીયે પૂજયા ના હોય એવા પારકા દેવોની પૂજા કરવાનું કહેવાનો દાવો કરનાર છે.

તેથી હવે જો તમે માંરા કહ્યાં પ્રમાંણે કરશો અને માંરા કરારને ધ્યાન રાખશો, તો સર્વ પ્રજાઓમાં તમે માંત્ર ખાસ પ્રજા થશો. સમગ્ર પૃથ્વી માંરી છે. પણ હું તમને માંરા ખાસ લોકો તરીકે પસંદ કરુ છું.
