கர்த்தராகிய தேவனை உங்கள் இருதயங்களில் பரிசுத்தம்பண்ணுங்கள்; உங்களிலிருக்கிற நம்பிக்கையைக்குறித்து உங்களிடத்தில் விசாரித்துக் கேட்கிற யாவருக்கும் சாந்தத்தோடும் வணக்கத்தோடும் உத்தரவுசொல்ல எப்பொழுதும் ஆயத்தமாயிருங்கள்.

கலவரம் அதிகமாகிறதேயல்லாமல் தன் முயற்சியினாலே பலன் இல்லையென்று பிலாத்து பார்த்து, தண்ணீரை அள்ளி, மக்களுக்கு முன்பாக கைகளைக் கழுவி: இந்த நீதிமானுடைய இரத்தப்பழிக்கு நான் குற்றமற்றவன், நீங்களே பார்த்துக்கொள்ளுங்கள் என்றான்.

மக்களை மாற்றத் தன்னால் ஏதும் செய்ய முடியாது என்பதைப் பிலாத்து கண்டான். மேலும் மக்கள் பொறுமையிழப்பதையும் பிலாத்து கவனித்தான். ஆகவே தண்ணீரை எடுத்து மக்கள் எல்லோரும் காணுமாறு தன் கைகளைக் கழுவினான். பின்பு, “இவரது மரணத்திற்கு நான் பொறுப்பல்ல. நீங்களே அதைச் செய்கிறீர்கள்” என்று பிலாத்து கூறினான்.
