പടജ്ജനമെല്ലാം അതുപോലെ ഓരോരുത്തൻ ഓരോ കൊമ്പു വെട്ടി അബീമേലെക്കിന്റെ പിന്നാലെ ചെന്നു മണ്ഡപത്തിന്നരികെ ഇട്ടു തീ കൊടുത്തു മണ്ഡപത്തോടു കൂടെ അവരെ ചുട്ടുകളഞ്ഞു. അങ്ങനെ ശെഖേംഗോപുരവാസികളൊക്കെയും പുരുഷന്മാരും സ്ത്രീകളുമായി ഏകദേശം ആയിരം പേർ മരിച്ചുപോയി.
