ಆಗ ಆಕಸ್ಮಾತ್ತಾಗಿ ಮಹಾಭೂಕಂಪವುಂಟಾಯಿತು; ಸೆರೆಮನೆಯ ಅಸ್ತಿ ವಾರಗಳು ಕದಲಿದವು. ಅದೇ ಕ್ಷಣದಲ್ಲಿ ಕದಗಳೆಲ್ಲಾ ತೆರೆದವು, ಎಲ್ಲರ ಬೇಡಿಗಳು ಕಳಚಿಬಿದ್ದವು.

ಅವನು ಮೊದಲನೆಯ ಎರಡನೆಯ ಕಾವಲುಗಳನ್ನು ದಾಟಿ ಪಟ್ಟಣಕ್ಕೆ ಹೋಗುವ ಕಬ್ಬಿಣದ ಬಾಗಿಲಿಗೆ ಬಂದಾಗ ಅದು ತನ್ನಷ್ಟಕ್ಕೆ ತಾನೇ ಅವರಿಗೆ ತೆರೆಯಿತು. ಅವರು ಹೊರಗೆ ಬಂದು ಒಂದು ಬೀದಿಯನ್ನು ದಾಟಿದರು; ಕೂಡಲೆ ಆ ದೂತನು ಅವನನ್ನು ಬಿಟ್ಟು ಹೊರಟುಹೋದನು.

ಆಗ ಇಗೋ, ಕರ್ತನ ದೂತನು ಪೇತ್ರನ ಬಳಿಗೆ ಬಂದಾಗ ಅವನಿದ್ದ ಸೆರೆಮನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಬೆಳಕು ಹೊಳೆಯಿತು. ಅವನು ಪೇತ್ರನನ್ನು ಪಕ್ಕೆ ತಟ್ಟಿ ಎಬ್ಬಿಸಿ--ತಟ್ಟನೆ ಏಳು ಅಂದನು. ಆಗಲೇ ಅವನ ಕೈಗಳಿಂದ ಸರಪಣಿಗಳು ಕಳಚಿಬಿದ್ದವು.

ಆದರೆ ರಾತ್ರಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಕರ್ತನ ದೂತನು ಸೆರೆ ಮನೆಯ ಬಾಗಿಲುಗಳನ್ನು ತೆರೆದು ಅವರನ್ನು ಹೊರಕ್ಕೆ ತಂದು--

ಅದೇ ತಾಸಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಮಹಾಭೂಕಂಪವುಂಟಾಗಿ ಆ ಪಟ್ಟಣದ ಹತ್ತರಲ್ಲೊಂದ ಂಶವು ಬಿದ್ದು ಹೋಯಿತು; ಆ ಭೂಕಂಪದಲ್ಲಿ ಏಳು ಸಾವಿರ ಮಂದಿ ಹತರಾದರು ಉಳಿದವರು ಭಯ ಗ್ರಸ್ಥರಾಗಿ ಪರಲೋಕದ ದೇವರನ್ನು ಮಹಿಮೆ ಪಡಿಸಿದರು.
