ಇಸ್ರಾಯೇಲಿನ ಚೊಚ್ಚಲ ಮಗನಾದ ರೂಬೇನನ ಕುಮಾರರು (ರೂಬೇನನು ಚೊಚ್ಚಲ ಮಗನಾಗಿದ್ದನು; ಆದರೆ ಅವನು ತನ್ನ ತಂದೆಯ ಹಾಸಿಗೆಯನ್ನು ಅಪವಿತ್ರಮಾಡಿದ್ದರಿಂದ ಅವನ ಚೊಚ್ಚಲತನದ ಹಕ್ಕು ಇಸ್ರಾಯೇಲನ ಮಗ ನಾದ ಯೋಸೇಫನ ಕುಮಾರರಿಗೆ ಕೊಡಲ್ಪಟ್ಟಿತು. ಆದದರಿಂದ ಈ ವಂಶಾವಳಿಯು ಚೊಚ್ಚಲತನದ ಪ್ರಕಾರ ಬರೆಯಲ್ಪಟ್ಟದ್ದಲ್ಲ.

ಲೇಯಳು ಗರ್ಭಿಣಿ ಯಾಗಿ ಮಗನನ್ನು ಹೆತ್ತು--ನಿಜವಾಗಿಯೂ ಕರ್ತನು ನನ್ನ ಬಾಧೆಯನ್ನು ನೋಡಿದ್ದಾನೆ; ಆದದರಿಂದ ನನ್ನ ಗಂಡನು ನನ್ನನ್ನು ಪ್ರೀತಿಮಾಡುವನೆಂದು ಹೇಳಿ (ಮಗುವಿಗೆ) ರೂಬೇನ್‌ ಎಂದು ಹೆಸರಿಟ್ಟಳು.

ಆದಿಕಾಂಡ 25:23
ಕರ್ತನು ಆಕೆಗೆ--ನಿನ್ನ ಹೊಟ್ಟೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಎರಡು ಜನಾಂಗಗಳು ಇವೆ. ನಿನ್ನ ಗರ್ಭದೊಳಗಿನಿಂದಲೇ ಎರಡು ತರವಾದ ಜನಗಳು ಬೇರೆಬೇರೆಯಾಗುವರು. ಒಂದು ತರವಾದ ಜನಕ್ಕಿಂತ ಇನ್ನೊಂದು ಬಲಗೊಳ್ಳು ವದು. ಇದಲ್ಲದೆ ಹಿರಿಯನು ಕಿರಿಯನನ್ನು ಸೇವಿಸುವನು ಎಂದು ಹೇಳಿದನು.
