ಅವರು ಪ್ರತ್ಯುತ್ತರ ವಾಗಿ--ಬಾಪ್ತಿಸ್ಮ ಮಾಡಿಸುವ ಯೋಹಾನನು; ಮತ್ತೆ ಕೆಲವರು--ಎಲೀಯನು; ಇನ್ನು ಕೆಲವರು--ಪ್ರವಾದಿ ಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಒಬ್ಬನು ಅನ್ನುತ್ತಾರೆ ಎಂದು ಹೇಳಿದರು.

ಅದಕ್ಕವರು--ಹಾಗಾದರೇನು? ನೀನು ಎಲೀಯನೋ ಎಂದು ಕೇಳಿದರು. ಅದಕ್ಕೆ ಅವನು--ನಾನಲ್ಲ ಅಂದನು. ಅವರು ನೀನು ಆ ಪ್ರವಾದಿಯೋ ಎಂದು ಕೇಳಿದ್ದಕ್ಕೆ ಅವನು--ಅಲ್ಲ ಎಂದು ಉತ್ತರಕೊಟ್ಟನು.
