দায়ূদ যখন রাজা ছিলেন তখন একটা দুর্ভিক্ষ হয়েছিল| সেই দুর্ভিক্ষ কবলিত অনাহারের দিন টানা তিন বছর চলেছিল| দায়ূদ প্রভুর কাছে প্রার্থনা করলেন এবং প্রভু তার উত্তর দিলেন| প্রভু বললেন, “শৌল এবং তার খুনী পরিবারই এই দুর্ভিক্ষের কারণ| শৌল গিবিয়োনীযদের মেরে ফেলেছে বলে এই দুর্ভিক্ষ এসেছে|”

য়িরীহো শহরের সমস্ত প্রবেশ পথ বন্ধ করে দেওয়া হয়েছিল| কাছেই ইস্রায়েলের লোকেরা, সেইজন্য শহরের লোকরা ভয় পেয়ে গিয়েছিল| শহর থেকে কেউ বেরোত না, শহরে কেউ আসতও না|

প্রভু যিহোশূয়কে বললেন, “ভয় পেও না| আশা ছেড়ো না| তোমার সমস্ত য়োদ্ধাকে নিয়ে অযে চলে যাও| অযের রাজাকে পরাজিত করার জন্য আমি তোমাদের সাহায্য করব| আমি তোমাদের কাছে রাজা, রাজার লোকদের, তার শহর এবং তার দেশ সবকিছু দিচ্ছি|
